As this summer’s blockbuster season reminds us comic book adaptations are big business with the latest incarnations of heroes old and new filling the local picturehouse and running merry riot over box office records.
Given the twin benefits of a wealth of material on which to draw and a ready audience primed to see their favourites fleshed out and thrown onto a movie screen it seems that we’ll be seeing many more familiar, and some less familiar, cartoon characters in movies of their own.
Jean Dujardin turned the world into a swooning mess when he led Michel Hazanavicius’ award magnet The Artist last year and in this article Anwar Brett takes a look at another of the actor’s roles, that of Lucky Luke in James Huth’s adaptation of the comic book by Morris, which is out now on DVD, as well as nine other cartoon heroes »

This film’s stop-and-start cycle has picked up once again — possibly right before it dies down once more. Almost five months after Patricia Arquette found herself in Jake Scott‘s biopic of Jeff Buckley, The Daily Mail have learned that Gemma Arterton is in talks to join the project, which has (apparently) nabbed Olivia Thirlby and Harry Treadaway (Fish Tank) since our last report.
In Scott‘s film — one that, since we last heard, has been given the title of Mystery White Boy — Arterton would appear as “a character who represents the partying women in [Buckley's] life,” a role that stands in contrast to Thirlby‘s: one of “the more responsible partners with whom Buckley enjoyed relationships.” Treadaway, in the meantime, is going musical in the picture, being pegged to play Buckley’s drummer, Matt Johnson. That’s a part he should handle with a little grace; he took a similar role in another music biopic, »

Gemma Arterton, Olivia Thirlby and Harry Treadaway have signed on to the Jeff Buckley biopic "Mystery White Boy" which Jake Scott ("Welcome to the Rileys") is directing reports The Daily Mail.
Buckley (to be played by Reeve Carney) emerged on the club scene in New York City in the early 1990s and recorded his only studio album "Grace" in 1994. After two years of touring, Buckley had begun work on his second album when he drowned in a boating accident in 1997 at the age of thirty. Since his death, his work has gone on to achieve success and acclaim, most notably his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".
Arterton would play a character who represents the partying women in his life, while Thirlby stands in for the more responsible partners with whom he enjoyed relationships. Treadaway will play Buckley’s first drummer Matt Johnson.

Even though the rival project "Greetings From Tim Buckley" is in the can and if not finished, then pretty much nearly there, the filmmakers behind the Jeff Buckley biopic "Mystery White Boy" are choosing to make it right intead of fast. With the rights locked up to use Buckley's music, the blessing of his estate who are also involved with the film, and with rehearsals with already under way with lead Reeve Carney, this one is aiming to be the only Buckley movie you'll need to see, and they're adding a trio of strong talent.
The usually on point Baz Bamigboye reports that Gemma Arterton, Olivia Thirlby and Harry Treadaway are all lining up for roles in the developing pic. Penned by Ryan Jaffe ("The Rocker"), who is using David Browne's book "Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley" to help shape the story, the »

Cannes Film Festival movie review: In Variety, Justin Chang says the following about Walter Salles‘ On the Road, a film adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s 1957 novel starring Garrett Hedlund (Dean Moriarty / Neal Cassady), Sam Riley (Sal Paradise / Jack Kerouac’s alter ego), and Kristen Stewart (photo, as Marylou / LouAnne Henderson): "Evocatively lensed, skillfully made and duly attentive to the mercurial qualities of its daunting source material, Walter Salles’ picture pulses with youthful energy but feels overly calculated in its bid for spontaneity, attesting to the difficulty and perhaps futility of trying to reproduce Kerouac’s literary lightning onscreen. "… The blur of events and surface impressions onscreen … feels overlong at 139 minutes, yet nowhere near long enough, and even Riley’s appealing, bright-eyed turn can’t keep Sal from seeming a passive, psychologically weak protagonist. "The other actors hit their notes effectively, particularly [Viggo] Mortensen and [Tom] Sturridge as the respective alter egos »

Saoirse Ronan has always been one for mixing things up, whether she's playing ultimate bratty little sister in "Atonement" or snapping necks to a Chemical Brothers beat in "Hanna."
Ronan's latest project is a juicy one and suits the young actress perfectly. She's taking on the starring role of real-life feminist, pacifist and writer Vera Brittain in an adaptation of her memoir "Testament of Youth." "Harry Potter" producer David Heyman is working on the film, which is also being backed by the BBC.
The book details Brittain's experiences in World War I as a nurse and the losses she suffered, including her beloved fiancé Roland. "Testament of Youth" launched the young writer into the public eye; even Virginia Woolf was a fan of the book. Brittain's story was also turned into an award-winning TV mini-series in the '70s.
It's a great role for the grown-up actress, whose career hasn't followed the usual teen trajectory, »

British director Paul Andrew Williams is gearing up to tackle some difficult subject matter for his next film, as THR reports the director will be helming the concentration camp drama Sobibor. He will be reuniting with his Song for Marion producers, Egoli Tossell and Steel Mill for the project.
The project, which Williams also wrote, is based on the barely known, true story of the only recorded escape from a concentration camp. “In October 14, 1943, around half of the 600 prisoners in the Sobibor extermination camp in Nazi-occupied Poland revolted against their guards and escaped. The Nazis closed down the camp and bulldozed it.” There’s no word on any production or casting details for the project, but one can assume they’ll begin to surface after the news from Cannes dies down.
THR also informs us that Sobibor recently made headlines in the news after a German court sentenced John Demjanjuk »

On the Road: Kristen Stewart as Marylou, Sam Riley‘s / Sal Paradise’s ear "I just had a great idea, you guys are gonna love it!" exclaims Garrett Hedlund‘s Dean Moriarty at the end of this French-subtitled On the Road clip. (Please scroll down to check out Sur la route.) Also seen in the clip are Kristen Stewart‘s Marylou and Sam Riley‘s Sal Paradise. Walter Salles directed this year’s Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or contender. Kristen Stewart is the focus of this particular On the Road clip, as Marylou is apparently telling Sal that she’s going to dump Dean. She sounds a bit like a fatalist: better dump Dean before he dumps her. In any case, she’s already got a fiance at home, a sailor. Marylou also sounds like a traditionalist here: she wants a house and a baby, "something normal. »

While most of the royals from around the world were day-drinking at Windsor Castle today (seriously, most of them), one of Monaco's royal darlings was at a different party, hanging out south of London at a wee little film festival called Cannes.
The celebs were out in full force today in the south of France, taking time out from their packed roster of indie film screenings to catch a little light-hearted flick around noon: DreamWorks' "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."
Some celebs, however, went to see a more erudite flick: a re-release of the Sergio Leone’s 1984 film "Once Upon A Time In America," sponsored by the Gucci Film Foundation. Gucci girls Gemma Arterton and Natasha Poly were in attendance, as well as Jane Fonda, Naomi Watts and Salma Hayek, who looked lovely in a sparkly -- you guessed it -- Gucci dress..
But the lady that most caught our »

Over the past 50 years James Bond has had no shortage of lovely ladies. Shortage of good scripts or directors... maybe. But of babes? Never. Here's a very well-made infographic of all the Bond girls put together by CableTV.Com celebrating the Golden Anniversary of 007. My vote for the hottest Bond girl since I've been born has to be Famke Janssen. Her look is totally dated now, unlike the timeless bond girls of the now cool again 60's, but she had my full attention in Goldeneye. Cutest has to be Gemma Arterton in Quantum of Solace. Stupidest... Halle Berry. She was the icing on the "this movie is terrible" cake. Who are your favorite Bond girls??? »

Last month we told you that Marvel Studios was hoping to score Jessica Chastain (The Help, The Debt) for the key role of Maya Hansen in the upcoming sequel, Iron Man 3. Due to a full schedule, Chastain has turned down the role and said this on her facebook page.
“Sorry to say that Iron Man 3 isn’t going to work out. My schedule is jammed packed and I can’t fit anything else in. The press announced my possible attachment far too soon. I know many of you wanted me to be involved, and I’m so sorry to disappoint you. Hopefully there’ll be another Marvel film in my future. Shane Black and everyone on the IM3 team are really wonderful. I’m very excited to see the film when it comes out. xx”

Two weeks ago, it looked as if Marvel Studios had landed another promising star to join the growing cast of Iron Man 3, but we found out yesterday that Oscar-nomintated Jessica Chastain simply couldn’t take the gig due to scheduling conflicts.
Chastain had reportedly beat out Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton and Isla Fisher for the part, but it’s none of these names who Marvel Studios is in talks with now for the role. As we mentioned yesterday, director Shane Black needed to find a replacement quick with Iron Man 3 gearing up for production in the coming weeks, and they have, with Rebecca Hall.
Variety is reporting that Disney and Marvel Studios are in talks with the British actress take on the role described as a “sexy” and ...

Well, that was fast. Just days after Jessica Chastain (The Help) decided to drop out of consideration (again) for a role in the upcoming Iron Man 3, a replacement has already been found.
Deadline reports that British actress Rebecca Hall is in talks to replace Chastain, in a role that was previously described as a "sexy scientist every bit as smart" as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Interestingly, when Chastain was reportedly offered the role, the other contenders included Isla Fisher, Diane Kruger, and Gemma Arterton, but not Hall.

At the end of April, reports claimed the star of The Tree of Life, The Help and The Debt had been offered the part of "a sexy scientist."
It was said she had been approached earlier but had too many other commitments. It now appears she was still unable to clear her diary for the Iron Man sequel.
Writing on her Facebook page, Chastain said: "Sorry to say that Iron Man 3 isn't going to work out. My schedule is jammed packed and I can't fit anything else in. The press announced my possible attachment far too soon.
