Just two days before Sundance Film Festival will unveil its lineup, the other major January Utah festival has released theirs. Now in its 29th iteration, next year’s Slamdance Film Festival––which will also be providing programming both in-person and online, from January 20th through 29th––has unveiled its features slate. The lineup for the festival, which opens with Moby’s Punk Rock Vegan Movie, was culled from 7,600 total submissions, 1,522 of which were features. All films selected in the Narrative Features and Documentary Features competition categories are directorial debuts without U.S. distribution, with budgets of less than 1 million Usd.
“From the streets of Seattle to the psychedelic skies of a unicorn-run dystopia, our filmmakers are transporting audiences to new dimensions with stories that explore the nuance of disability, immigration and gender. Happy Face is a very different kind of film. Beginning as a personal concept and going on to an Indiegogo campaign, using crowdfunding as a way to make it happen, Alexandre Franchi (The Wild Hunt) went out of his way, with passion and a desire, to create a film that promotes diversity and shows real people with real disabilities and facial differences on screen in a way that isn’t presented as farcical, nor overly saccharine, nor merely tragic. The courage of these individuals is something Franchi explores, showing them, as he mentioned in his campaign, as people not just with disfigurements, but people with their own personal desires, relationships and insecurities. What a beautiful idea, what a novel approach.

"Me and my brother – we're, not all bad..." 4Digital Media has released an official trailer for 2 Graves in the Desert, a crime thriller that is the feature debut of French producer / filmmaker Benjamin Goalabré. A man and woman wake to find themselves tied & gagged in the trunk of a pick-up truck and it soon becomes clear that they have been kidnapped and taken as hostages. Their two kidnappers have their own agenda, and it's not a pleasant one. Described as a "cold thriller set on the blazing road to Las Vegas, provoking the ultimate question – is there any way the hostages can escape alive?" The cast includes Michael Madsen, William Baldwin, Cassie Howarth, Iván González, and E.R. Ruiz. Looks like a crazy combination of Buried, but in a car trunk, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Or something like that? Check it out below. Here's the official trailer...

In our exclusive clip from Happy Face, we hear from people who are often shut out of the cultural conversation, not necessarily because of what they say, but because of their outward appearance. Set in Montreal, the film will enjoy its U.S. premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival later this week. Here's the brief synopsis: "A teenager deforms his face with bandages and attends a therapy workshop for disfigured patients in a misguided attempt to reconnect with his manipulative disease-ravaged mother." Alexandre Franchi and Joëlle Bourjolly wrote the screenplay; Franchi directed. The cast includes Robin L'Houmeau, Debbie Lynch-White, David Roche, E.R. Ruiz, Alison Midstokke, Cindy Nicholsen, and Noémie Kocher. Watch the exclusive clip below, along with the official trailer. Happy Face will screen at Slamdance...

(Spoilers ahead for a slew of television shows; proceed with caution!)
A television show represents a fictional world, an escape from the drama that surrounds us in our real lives. Instead of dealing with our relationship problems, we discuss which brother Elena Gilbert should choose on The Vampire Diaries. And instead of reflecting on our own issues, we get lost in Walter White’s downfall or Olivia Pope’s family drama. Typically, these fictional worlds represent a more extreme universe than the one in which we live, and therefore a more exciting one. Most of us don’t have a...

Big changes are coming to NBC next fall, including a radical remaking of its Thursday night lineup. As part of a new fall schedule just announced, the Peacock network will shift Parks and Recreation to the 8 p.m. lead-off slot Thursday, delay the return of Community, add three new sitcoms (including The Michael J. Fox Show) and relocate Parenthood to the 10 p.m. timeslot which once housed E.R. and L.A. Law. In another big move, Revolution will give up its cushy slot following The Voice and air Wednesdays at 8, with the buzzy James Spader drama The Blacklist inheriting the 10 p.m. Monday slot. Overall, NBC is changing at least one hour every night of the week (except Sundays in the fall, which will remain devoted to football), with a new show (or newly relocated show) airing at 10 p.m. every weeknight. NBC is also saving some big guns until...
