Watch the first teaser for Showtime’s upcoming series ‘Billions’

8 July 2015 12:52 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Showtime’s anti-terrorism drama Homeland drew a lot of praise in its first season, some of which went to the show’s co-leads, Claire Danes and Damien Lewis. While Lewis’ character, Nicholas Brody, has since departed the series, Lewis himself soon returned to the channel, signing on to the new series Billions. A Wall Street-set drama, the series is co-created by Ocean’s Thirteen and The Girlfriend Experience scribes David Levien and Brian Koppelman, who worked alongside financial journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin to develop the show. The synopsis is as follows.

Billions is a bold, contemporary drama that melds the worlds of ultra-wealth, influence and corruption as personified in two highly ambitious opposing figures: hard-charging, blue-blooded, politically connected U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Emmy and Golden Globe winner Paul Giamatti) and brilliant, calculating, blue-collar billionaire hedge fund king, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Emmy and Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis). Damian Lewis is no hero in Showtime’s Billions.

As seen in the first trailer for the new drama — which is set in the world of New York City power politics and finance — the Emmy-winning Homeland vet and Emmy winner Paul Giamatti each play highly ambitious figures.

Specifically, Giamatti is Chuck Rhoades, a hard-charging, blue-blooded and politically connected U.S. Attorney, while Lewis is Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, a calculating, blue-collar billionaire hedge fund king. And needless to say, as evidenced the trailer above, the gents are by no means friends. »

Daredevil concept art shows Matt Murdock’s red costume

20 May 2015 7:45 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Marvel has given us a glimpse at some concept artwork from Ryan Meinerding for Matt Murdock’s iconic red suit in the Netflix series Daredevil, which looks pretty close indeed to the costume that made it on screen in the season finale…

“The tone that was really communicated was the sense of realism that they were going for,” Meinerding tells Marvel.com. “I think the way that [manifested itself in] the costume was through the armor and making it feel a little bit more padded than you traditionally think of Daredevil being. When we do these designs, there’s a concept of grounded and a concept of reality. The grounded nature that they brought to the vigilante costume was the simplicity and effectiveness, because you’re trying to conceal your identity but also [have to be] mobile enough to fight. When you do a super hero costume in that world, it’s hard to be as »

Daredevil Recap: Bury Our Friends

29 April 2015 2:03 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Can we talk about Daredevil’s women problem? Yeah, yeah, there aren’t enough women, but the problem I find most egregious is how the narrative itself downplays not only the women in the story, but their actions and agency. Take Karen. Her storyline reaches a weird peak this episode after she tries to deal with the fact that she shot Wesley. (I’m going to miss him dearly; Toby Leonard Moore’s American accent always sounded like he was very slowly savoring a piece of chocolate.) She drinks herself to sleep and sobs in the shower, but she doesn’t tell anyone. Even when Foggy asks her about her night, she murmurs something, and when Matt asks, she simply says, “The world fell apart.” When Foggy says, “You can’t just run around killing people and call yourself a human being!” she gets the same look someone might get »

Joss Whedon fought for a Daredevil movie at Marvel

29 April 2015 1:20 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Marvel kicked off its Netflix shows earlier this month with the release of the 13-part series Daredevil, but if Joss Whedon had his way, the Man Without Fear would never have appeared on the small screen, with the Avengers: Age of Ultron helmer telling IGN that he fought for a Daredevil movie from Marvel Studios.

“I fought for Daredevil to be a film instead of a TV show. Then under the auspices of Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight… I’m dying to see the show but they released it just as I started the press tour! If the show’s working, the show’s working. Comic books are serialised entertainment and a lot of them lend themselves to TV shows as much or more than they do to movies. I like [Daredevil] because he’s basically Marvel’s Batman, thanks to Frank Miller basically. So for me I didn’t think »

Exclusive: Charlie Cox would like to see Elektra and Black Widow in Daredevil Season Two; says joining The Avengers would be a “dream come true”

23 April 2015 11:56 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

While over in London to promote Daredevil, Flickering Myth’s Deputy Editor Luke Owen caught up with Charlie Cox to talk about the series and look ahead to season two. With the new season being announced for next year, how will this affect the line up of other shows including Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders?

“Yeah, I don’t really know [how it affects The Defenders], that’s being discussed by people who are much more important than I am,” Cox told us. “If you watch the first season, you discover that it’s Matt Murdock’s evolution into Daredevil. So by the time we get to the end, we’ve only just touched on that. So I think it’s valid to have another 13 hours where we see Matt Murdock inhabit Daredevil and live in that persona. So we’ll do that this year and it will presumably be released next year, »

Netflix

Marvel has managed to completely reinvigorate the superhero movie in a massive way. It all began with 2008’s Iron Man and then spread out to the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, culminating in the release of 2012’s The Avengers. But since then, Marvel hasn’t been content to just focus on the big league superheroes.

Rather, with Phase Two, they’ve started to branch out a little bit more. Not only have there been wild card characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy but Marvel even expanded out into television with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now comes the release of Daredevil, a Marvel-produced series airing exclusively on Netflix: a new move that promises to revolutionize the superhero genre yet again.

Daredevil is just the first of four planned series Marvel is making for Netflix, and will be followed by Aka Jessica Jones, then Luke Cage and finally Iron Fist »
