We strive to cover as many theatre productions as physically possible here at Thn, and love it when one comes our way that ties into film at the same time. Sure we’ve had some duds over the years, but there are also the gems that come our way too (we’re thinking Dirty Dancing, Billy Elliot and the brilliant Once to name a few).
Now in previews but officially opening in a couple of weeks is the stage version of Gurinder Chadha’s rather brilliant Bend It Like Beckham, which is probably most famous as being Keira Knightley’s break-out movie.
The production officially opens at the end of June, and we hope to bring you a full review in the weeks leading up to the big opening night on the 24th, but for now here’s a very special, first-look at the cast in the musical.

McNamara — who’s becoming a familiar face to the network, as she’ll also recur in the third season of ABC Family’s family drama “The Fosters” — will star opposite Dominic Sherwood (“Vampire Academy”) who nabbed the male lead role, as fellow Shadowhunter Jace.
The supernatural series focuses on Clary Fray (McNamara) who gets a surprise piece of family history as a birthday present: she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. After her mother is kidnapped, Clary discovers that vampires, werewolves and other spooky creatures do exist as she quickly learns to navigate this new world.

However, the series was scrapped after the film didn't perform as well as expected, making over $90 million worldwide. It was initially marketed to become the next successful 'young adult' movie series, following Twilight, The Hunger Games and Divergent.
Campbell Bower told Digital Spy that he was sad to hear the movie series had been scrapped, but that he enjoyed making the film.
"Of course I was disappointed, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't," he said. "We were greenlit for movie two. I think placement, timing, all sorts of different factors led to [that decision]. We did well, but we didn't do supremely well. »
Digital Spy chatted with the actor about nerves, football skills and swapping Hollywood for the West End.
Bend it Like Beckham: Where are the cast of the 2002 box office hit now?
The original film has become a cult favourite. Were you a fan?
"Yeah, of course. For me, it was a point in time when I was growing up. I was either turning a teenager, or had just turned into a teenager, and obviously I was madly in love with Keira Knightley. One of the first movies that she did was a film called The Hole, and this [Bend It Like Beckham] came shortly after that, »
Stevenson told Digital Spy: "I'm really delighted because it's such a fantastic story, and I can see it lending itself very well to the stage.
"I often think, 'No, that's a bad idea, don't make a musical out of that movie', but Bend It Like Beckham is screaming out to be made into one."
She continued: "There's so much song and dance, and it's such a vibrant story. It's more than just a story, it's got a lot to say about what it is to be a British-Asian and the battle between the two competing cultures. [Chadha] has such a capacity to make that into something joyous and funny. »

ABC Family has found its male lead for its upcoming series based on the "Mortal Instruments" books.
Variety reports that Dominic Sherwood ("Vampire Academy," Taylor Swift's "Style" video) has joined the "Shadowhunters" cast as Jace, a member of the the titular group of human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. He helps 18-year-old Clary Fray search for her mother who's gone missing, and helps Clary come to terms with her new identity as a Shadowhunter.
"Shadowhunters" seems to be a hard reboot of the "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" movie, which starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower as Clary and Jace, respectively. That 2013 flick didn't score so well at the box office, prompting production company Constantin Film to reimagine Cassandra Clare's book series for a television format; it looks like "Shadowhunters" will act as if that flick never happened, and tell the "Mortal Instruments" story from the beginning. »

Perhaps TV audiences will be kinder than moviegoers. After The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones went embarrassingly belly-up at the box office in the summer of 2013, Constantin Film was left in quite an unenviable position, having already planned a follow-up film that it was then forced to pull the plug on. Now, it appears that the Ya supernatural fantasy series, based on the novels by Cassandra Clare, are getting another shot at success in the form of an ABC Family series titled Shadowhunters.
Like City of Bones, the show is expected to focus on 18-year-old Clary Fray, who discovers on her birthday that she is descended from Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids tasked with hunting down monstrous demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped by forces of darkness, Clary is thrown headfirst into a supernatural New York City populated by faeries, vampires, werewolves and other fantastical denizens. With the help of Shadowhunter »

After flopping at the box office, "The Mortal Instruments" is getting new life as a TV series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC Family has ordered "Shadowhunters," based on the novels by Cassandra Clare, straight to series, with the adaptation eyed for 13-episode first season. THR reported back in October that production company Constantin Film wanted to turn the franchise into a "high-end drama" series in order to "go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth" than a film franchise could.
The move is also financial, since the 2013 big screen adaptation, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, only accrued $31 million at the domestic box office, cancelling plans for a movie sequel, "City of Ashes."
As in the film, "Shadowhunters" will center around Clary Fray, who discovers on her 18th birthday that she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids »

Cassandra Clare’s immensely popular young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments is being brought to TV as Shadowhunters, a thirteen episode drama by ABC Family, THR is reporting. The story follows protagonist Clarissa “Clary” Fray, who discovers she descends from a lineage of “Shadowhunters,” human-angel amalgams who hunt demons. Clary’s mother is kidnapped and Clary, a Shadowhunter named Jace, and her best friend Simon embark on a rescue/journey of self-discovery.
ABC’s decision to take Shadowhunters comes after the 2013 misfire screen adaptation of the series in City of Bones, produced by Screen Gems. City of Bones starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, and there’s no word as to the casting of the new TV series.

The project marks the cabler’s first scripted “saga-to-series,” based on the bestselling book series by Cassandra Clare, who commented, “I’m excited to see ABC Family bring the world of the ‘Shadowhunters’ to life. As a huge fan of longform television drama, I can’t wait to see the story unfold and for the fans to have more time with the world and the characters.”
“Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, and she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...
Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.
For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team »
