The Mortal Instruments Drama Shadowhunters Goes Straight To Series At ABC Family

1 April 2015 1:12 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Perhaps TV audiences will be kinder than moviegoers. After The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones went embarrassingly belly-up at the box office in the summer of 2013, Constantin Film was left in quite an unenviable position, having already planned a follow-up film that it was then forced to pull the plug on. Now, it appears that the Ya supernatural fantasy series, based on the novels by Cassandra Clare, are getting another shot at success in the form of an ABC Family series titled Shadowhunters.

Like City of Bones, the show is expected to focus on 18-year-old Clary Fray, who discovers on her birthday that she is descended from Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids tasked with hunting down monstrous demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped by forces of darkness, Clary is thrown headfirst into a supernatural New York City populated by faeries, vampires, werewolves and other fantastical denizens. ABC Family Orders 'The Mortal Instruments' Series 'Shadowhunters'

31 March 2015 6:55 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

After flopping at the box office, "The Mortal Instruments" is getting new life as a TV series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC Family has ordered "Shadowhunters," based on the novels by Cassandra Clare, straight to series, with the adaptation eyed for 13-episode first season. THR reported back in October that production company Constantin Film wanted to turn the franchise into a "high-end drama" series in order to "go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth" than a film franchise could.

The move is also financial, since the 2013 big screen adaptation, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, only accrued $31 million at the domestic box office, cancelling plans for a movie sequel, "City of Ashes."

As in the film, "Shadowhunters" will center around Clary Fray, who discovers on her 18th birthday that she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids »

Cassandra Clare’s ‘Shadowhunters’ Series comes to ABC Family

30 March 2015 6:46 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Cassandra Clare’s immensely popular young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments is being brought to TV as Shadowhunters, a thirteen episode drama by ABC Family, THR is reporting. The story follows protagonist Clarissa “Clary” Fray, who discovers she descends from a lineage of “Shadowhunters,” human-angel amalgams who hunt demons. Clary’s mother is kidnapped and Clary, a Shadowhunter named Jace, and her best friend Simon embark on a rescue/journey of self-discovery.

ABC’s decision to take Shadowhunters comes after the 2013 misfire screen adaptation of the series in City of Bones, produced by Screen Gems. City of Bones starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, and there’s no word as to the casting of the new TV series.

Despite the paltry take by City of Bones ($31 million domestically), ABC Family president Tom Ascheim is confident, saying “Shadowhunters is a big, epic saga that will resonate with viewers »

‘The Mortal Instruments’ Series: ABC Family Orders ‘Shadowhunters’

30 March 2015 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

ABC Family has ordered “Shadowhunters,” a series based on “The Mortal Instruments” franchise, Variety has learned.

The project marks the cabler’s first scripted “saga-to-series,” based on the bestselling book series by Cassandra Clare, who commented, “I’m excited to see ABC Family bring the world of the ‘Shadowhunters’ to life. As a huge fan of longform television drama, I can’t wait to see the story unfold and for the fans to have more time with the world and the characters.”

“Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, and she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When Clary’s mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. 9 franchise-starting young adult films that struggled

25 March 2015 8:05 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...

Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.

For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team »

Eddie Redmayne Chuffed For ‘Thomas The Tank Engine’

2 March 2015 4:30 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

His childlike glee was one of the highlights of this year’s Oscar ceremony and it seems Eddie Redmayne really is young at heart. Having secured Hollywood’s highest accolade, he’s jumped aboard a straight-to-dvd animated movie of evergreen kids’ favourite Thomas The Tank Engine.

With an unusual subtitle of Sodor’s Legend Of The Lost Treasure, the new production also stars John Hurt and Jamie Campbell Bower. Sodor is the fictional island location where the stories are set, though sounds for all the world like something out of Lord Of The Rings these days.

Created by the Rev W. Awdry in 1946, the brand has seen a few adaptations, most notably the TV series voiced by Ringo Starr. However its first and only feature length outing was Thomas And The Magic Railroad, a lamentable live action film starring Alec Baldwin and Peter Fonda.

The Mortal Instruments: what we want from the TV show

17 February 2015 10:02 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The Mortal Instruments' film’s sequel might’ve been cancelled, but could a TV show deliver everything we want?

When Screen Gems and Constantin Film began production of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, they must have thought they were onto a winner. In 2010, the end of the Twilight Saga was in sight, and there looked to be an opportunity for a new Ya fantasy series to swoop in and nab its audience. The Mortal Instruments should’ve been the perfect successor, with its mixture of magic and romance, its sprawling fantastical world and vulnerable-yet-kickass heroine.

But when the first movie was released in 2013, it received negative reviews and a mediocre box office return. The sequel, City Of Ashes, had already been greenlit… but in the wake of the first film’s disappointing reception, it was first postponed and then cancelled altogether.
