1. William Parker: For Those Who Are, Still (Aum Fidelity/Centering)
I have been an admirer and observer of William Parker for a quarter century, but nothing prepared me for the impact of this three-disc set's final CD, which features an orchestral composition, Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still, which ranks high among the best orchestral music of the 21st century, and I'm including classical composers. In other words, don't cringe while imagining the usual jazz-with-strings hack job. There are moments in Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still -- particularly when the choir is singing Parker's poems of life and loss and creation -- when the grandeur of the year's most fashionable jazz album, Kamasi Washington's The Epic (also a three-cd set) comes to mind, but the difference -- the reason Parker's set ranks much higher -- is that his orchestrations are vastly more contrapuntal, colorful, individual, and just plain daring.

As champions of indie cinema, Dread Central is often privy to early details on upcoming projects, and today we have for you a first look at Kristian Day's Vessel in the form of a very preliminary plot breakdown and stills from the film along with two different posters.
Vessel stars actor, author, and public speaker Frank Meeink. He wrote the book Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead, and a major TV network just picked up a new reality show he'll be hosting. It also stars Vanessa Giselle, Jerika Rangel, Ryan Kolder, and Barron Christian. All the make-up was done by Patrick Boltinghouse of Vanity and Glamour.
Vessel was produced, directed, written, and photographed by Kristian Day and inspired by an idea from Marcus Koch (100 Tears, Fell). It was shot during 2010 in Des Moines, Iowa, and is currently in post production aiming for an October 2011 release.
According to Day, "The film is about drug abuse,...

Every so often, a role comes along that is so juicy and dynamic that an actor truly gets to sink his teeth in to the hilt and give it a good shake; these roles allow the actor to show a range of emotion and progress his character throughout the length of the film in ways that most scripts simply fail at enabling.
Enter Fell, the newest feature-length offering from Marcus Koch. Best known for his special effects work in films like Walking Distance and Sweatshop, Koch also directed the cult favorite 100 Tears and Rot, showing a wide range of ability in his warped mind. Fell is very different than anything we've seen from Koch before, and for good reason; during the Q&A at Bloodbath Film Festival in Texas,...

Marcus Koch seems to be the go to guy for special effects these days in the indie horror world. Having racked up a number of credits in the past few years including Bloody Bloody Bible Camp starring Reggie Bannister (Phantasm), Tim Sullivan (host of the TV show Scream Queens and director of 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams), and adult film superstar Ron Jeremy. He has also worked on Herschell Gordon Lewis's The Uh-Oh Show, Andrew Allan's Brainjacked, Jay Woelfel's Live Evil and many other films. Marcus Koch has also stepped back into the director's chair with Fell starring Jeff Dylan Graham. Here's what Marcus Koch had to say about his career.
So who is Marcus Koch and what is he all about?
Not sure yet, but, I'm a Pieces. Sometimes I don hideous mohawks, listen to bad 80's music and collect cheesy tuxedo t-Shirts. I love horror films and I love weird art.

Joel D. Wynkoop is one of the hardest working actors in the indie horror world, having appeared in over 50 films. He is the John Carradine of horror films. Towards the beginning of the decade, he experienced a resurgence in film work and racked up one credit after another. The 80's and 90's saw him working infrequently, though one of his more well known films is Truth or Dare: Screaming For Sanity. I had the chance to ask him a few questions about his career. Here is what he had to say.

We're always on the lookout for up and coming filmmakers who do things a little differently from the norm, and composer Kristian Day seems to have accomplished that with his new short film "Bird Seed", which was written, directed, and scored by him.
Filmed in the autumn of 2009, Day's "Bird Seed" is a glimpse of a one-sided need for being wanted and holding on to what makes someone happy. It was shot in Des Moines, Iowa, and stars Vanessa Giselle (the ex-singer from Iowa hardcore band Victim or Victory) and newcomer Leila Sutcliffe. The gore make-up was by Patrick Boltinghouse of Vanity & Glamour.
As the director explains his motivation for "Bird Seed", "I don't like doing auditions with new actors for features; I'd rather make short films with them to see how we work together. 'Bird Seed' is a prime example of this."
Check it out below. If your tastes run more toward the avant-garde,...

Because we do so love the indie scene round these parts and always strive to encourage those who we know to kick ass to continue doing so, I thought it only made sense to hip you guys to the teaser for a film called Body in a Dumpster, which just reared its twisted head today.
Not a lot is known about the plot, only what director Kristian Day told me. ”It's about a priest and he is not well.” Hell, I’m always in for negative stories about priests! Practical effects were handled by 100 Tears director and Oddtopsy FX head Marcus Koch, one of the coolest guys in the indie scene with the most kicking of mohawks.
Enough jabber! Dig the Body in a Dumpster trailer below, and be sure to hit up its MySpace page for more info!
