‘Stalled’ DVD Review

Stars: Dan Palmer, Antonia Bernath, Tamaryn Payne | Written by Dan Palmer | Directed by Christian James

One of the films high on my “must-see” Frightfest list last year, unfortunately work got in the way and I missed it. However I didn’t miss the furore surrounding its screenings, which – if memory serves, sold out on more than one occasion? Our man Jack Kirby did see it though and unfortunately he wasn’t too impressed, but I think he may have been suffering from zombie-movie fatigue having sat through opening night snoozefest The Dead 2.

Yet another example of the British zombie comedy, Stalled takes a more puerile route in pursuit of its laughs, but then when you set your film in a toilet where else is there for you to go? Essentially a one-man performance, the film sees hapless caretaker Wc (writer/actor Dan Palmer) trapped in the restroom when a zombie

Occupied!: Tamaryn Payne talks Stalled

Sophie West talks with Tamaryn Payne on working on comedy zombie movie Stalled...

Since our ★★★★★ review of the movie at last year's FrighFest, Flickering Myth have been keeping a close eye on Christian James and Dan Palmer's zom-com-in-a-john Stalled. Ahead of its DVD and Blu-Ray release tomorrow, Sophie West sits down with Tamaryn Payne to discuss what it was like working on the movie...

Sw: You have worked with Stalled's writer/actor before, right? How did you first meet him and director Christian James?

Tp: Yes eons ago! When I was back home in Bournemouth, Dan was looking for 2 girls for a slasher film and he found me at a local drama school, which led to me playing Shaz in Small Town Folk which was a brilliant experience for a 17 year old looking to go to drama school.

You are probably best known as Analise Appleton from Hollyoaks.

Stalled DVD Review

Director: Christian James,

Starring: Dan Palmer, Antonia Bernath, Tamaryn Payne, Mark Holden, Giles Alderson,

Running Time: 84 Minutes

Certificate: 18

Are zombie films really running out of ideas? Or perhaps a better question is “Can zombie films run out of ideas?” Although not giving a definitive answer, Christian James’ follow-up to 2004’s Freak Out, sees how far it can push the genre. Well, it doesn’t exactly push the genre, as it does try to keep it contained. Very contained. Stalled is set, almost exclusively, in a woman’s toilet, and more specifically in a single cubicle.

A janitor (Palmer) finds himself trapped in the little girl’s room on Christmas Eve, once the dead start walking the earth. It’s all fun and games at first, as he manages to spy on two scantily clad office workers who decide to have some experimental fun. That is until one rips out the other’s throat.

Synopsis:

A luckless maintenance gopher finds himself stuck in a ladies restroom during the Zombie apocalypse.

It has been said many times before, but it's worth mentioning again - getting comedy horror right is a tough task. You either end up being not funny enough to be a comedy or not scary enough to be a horror. Since Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead, many imitators have stepped forward trying to be the worthy successor and every single one of them has failed - seemingly no one could bottle the lightening that Wright and his team did. That is until Stalled came along. Christian James and Dan Palmer have cracked the code to produce one of the best horror comedies of all-time, and the easily best zom-com since Shaun of the Dead.

It's Night of the Living Dead

First Poster for UK Horror Comedy Stalled

  • HeyUGuys
Currently in post-productions, Stalled is the latest entry into the UK horror comedy genre that British filmmakers often seem to have a handle on better than most. (Naturally, I point you towards Shaun of the Dead as a good starting point if you’re new to the genre.)

We’ve had the first poster for the film sent over, giving us a tease of its intriguing premise:

“It’s Christmas Eve and a soon to be shit-canned maintenance gopher (Dan Palmer) is changing light bulbs and cleaning toilets instead of drinking egg-nog and making out with drunk receptionists at the annual office party. Unfortunately for this forlorn floor-sweeper he chooses to use the Ladies’ Restroom the very second a Zombie Outbreak occurs! Will he bowl us over and flush away the undead or (like in his pre-apocalypse life) simply remain …’Stalled’?

'Hollyoaks' Calvin Demba: 'Scott should man up over Annalise'
Hollyoaks star Calvin Demba has hinted that his character Scott Sabeka will soon step up his pursuit of fellow student Annalise Appleton. Scott and Annalise (Tamaryn Payne) have harboured feelings for each other for some time, but have so far shown no signs of becoming a proper couple. However, Demba told Digital Spy that next week's Hollyoaks episodes - which explore a turbulent time for Scott at home in London - could prove to be a turning point for the story. Demba commented: "What happens to Scott when he's back in London does give him a different attitude towards life. It feels like he needs to man up and start facing his problems head-on. "He really needs to seize the day, so when he does come back to Chester, he's meaning business. He's going to try and sort this out once and for all." Scott is good friends with (more

'Hollyoaks' Rob Edwards 'will regret Annalise split'
Hollyoaks student Rob Edwards will feel like an "idiot" after trying to move on quickly from girlfriend Annalise Appleton, it has been revealed. As first reported last month, Rob's relationship with Annalise (Tamaryn Payne) is about to come to an end on screen, but he tries to bounce back by chatting up Theresa McQueen (Jorgie Porter) at the Su Bar. However, the jock's antics don't go down well with his friend and rugby team-mate Will Savage, who is still protective over Theresa following their recent split. James Atherton, who plays Will, told TV Times that Rob's antics are partly motivated by jealousy - as he has started to struggle on the rugby pitch compared to his mate. Atherton explained: "Rob picked up an injury from the car accident and has never really recovered (more)
