‘Goon: Last of the Enforcers’ Review

Review by Matthew Turner

Stars: Seann William Scott, Alison Pill, Marc-Andre Grondin, Liev Schreiber, Wyatt Russell, Kim Coates, Elisha Cuthbert, Jay Baruchel, Callum Keith Rennie, Jonathan Mark Cherry | Written by Jay Baruchel, Jesse Chabot | Directed by Jay Baruchel

Back in 2011, Michael Dowse’s Canadian sports comedy Goon was a minor hit with critics, but only ended up taking a modest $12m at the U.S. box office. Evidently, however, the film has since picked up something of a cult following, which explains the presence of this somewhat belated but nonetheless entertaining sequel that reunites the majority of the key players.

The directorial debut of actor Jay Baruchel (who co-wrote and co-starred in the first film), the sequel finds sweet-natured but dim-witted ice hockey bruiser Doug “The Thug” Glatt (Seann William Scott) still playing for his beloved Halifax Highlanders and now married to former girlfriend Eva (Alison Pill), who has just announced that she’s expecting. »

Film Review: ‘Goon: Last of the Enforcers’

1 September 2017 1:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A gem among umpteen lame Canadian hockey comedies, 2011’s “Goon” was an unexpectedly snappy mix of violent slapstick, screwball farce and modern dude humor, one that struck a chord with viewers (at least eventually, particularly up north; in the U.S., it found its primary audience in home formats after modest box-office performance). Belated sequel “Goon: Last of the Enforcers” brings back most of the winning original cast, plus some promising new faces, in a slick followup.

Not returning, however, are original director Michael Dowse or writer Evan Goldberg, with star and co-writer Jay Baruchel taking over helming duties in his feature directorial bow. The earlier duo are missed. One immediately detects the lowered brow of Baruchel and Jesse Chabot’s new material, as well as its competent but uninspired handling, which extends to less viscerally funny rink action. “Goon” was a keeper. The perhaps prophetically named “Last” isn’t exactly 101 minutes in the penalty box, but »

'Goon: Last of the Enforcers': Film Review

30 August 2017 12:12 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Bowing at the 2011 Toronto International Film Fest, Goon was a surprisingly enjoyable sports pic, an underdog hockey tale whose shockingly violent hero (played by Seann William Scott) bore no ill will to the opponents whose noses he shattered on the ice. The film went on to modest success; now, rather than spin off a VOD sequel exploiting the title but recast with no-name actors, producers have reunited all key players for Goon: Last of the Enforcers, in which our man must become a grown-up. (One top-shelf supporting player, Eugene Levy, is missing here; T.J. Miller is added to the »

Review: ‘Goon: Last of the Enforcers’ is a Padded, Heartfelt Sequel

30 August 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The best part of hockey comedy Goon is its ability to never forget itself. Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg didn’t write it (based on Adam Frattasio and Douglas Smith’s non-fiction book) like your usual sports film where winning or losing was the goal. They instead brought to life a soft-spoken, compassionate guy whose only talent isn’t laying guys out on the ice like his bloodthirsty fans believe. No, Doug Glatt’s (Seann William Scott) calling is as protector for his family, friends, and teammates. He joined the Halifax Highlanders to provide a spark as well as a formidable presence that would lend his more talented linemates peace of mind and confidence. Victory was never about securing a championship, it was reminding his team what hockey meant beyond the scoreboard.

So when things cut to black on a game for which success occurred before the puck dropped — and »

Another Round Of Deadpool 2 Set Pics Point To Marvel’s Mutant Response Division

29 August 2017 3:31 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

It’s been a tremendously difficult month for Deadpool 2.

Filming on Fox and David Leitch’s comic book sequel ground to a halt two weeks ago when Joi “Sj” Harris, a talented road racer who signed on to double as Zazie Beetz’s Domino, was killed when an on-set motorcycle stunt went awry. The studio immediately shut down production to lend cast and crew members enough time to grieve, and it was during that admittedly brief window of time that the industry’s stunt community slammed Fox producers for what they believed was an avoidable accident.

Whether that is indeed the case is up for debate, but it’s understood Deadpool 2 is back shooting scenes on the streets of Vancouver. To prove it, Twitter user AnimalDesatado has relayed a pair of set photos that all but confirm the Mutant Response Division. First introduced via the X-Men comics, the »

Josh Brolin praises his Deadpool 2 co-star Ryan Reynolds

29 August 2017 3:17 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Josh Brolin has praised the talents and personality of his Deadpool co-star Ryan Reynolds.

Anticipation is building for the sequel to the foul-mouthed, R-rated, surprise hit superhero film Deadpool. And many are wondering if the film will be able to re-capture the magic of the initial outing.

One actor brought on board to help achieve that goal is Josh Brolin, who will be portraying fan favourite character Cable. But Brolin has been praising the talents of another actor, his co-star, Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds.

“He’s an amazing guy, very smart and really sweet — and really handsome,” Brolin told EW. “He’s a smart guy, he’s the one who saw this and tried to get this movie made for eight years and was unable to. I think he has such a perfect sensibility. He’s a great producer on it, there’s a lot to trust there.”

Deadpool 2 Set Photos Bring in the Mutant Response Division

29 August 2017 12:31 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

As production continues on Deadpool 2 in Vancouver, we've seen a new Deadpool 2 video that shows Zazie Beetz's Domino leaping from a freeway overpass into a giant inflatable panda bear. While it may certainly be hard to top that footage, more photos have surfaced from Vancouver indicating an organization from the comics known as the Mutant Response Division. And it looks like they have a strong presence in this sequel. As of now, though, there is no confirmation that the Mrd will show up. But when they do, they'll going by a different name.

Twitter user Animal Desatado noticed new photos from the Vancouver set, one of which features a soldier wearing a grey military or law enforcement uniform with the initials Dmc on the armband, which is also featured on the large truck behind him. Animal Desatado noticed that these uniforms are quite similar to the Mutant Response Division, »

From ‘Modern Family’ to ‘Veep,’ Emmy Nominated EPs on Keeping Their Comedy Fresh

16 August 2017 8:20 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s always nice to see new shows, like FX’s “Atlanta,” get Emmy nominations for comedy series, and to know that shows nominated for a second time, such as ABC’s “Black-ish” and Netflix’s “Master of None,” weren’t one-season-wonders. But what about the veteran comedies — the ones that have earned Emmy noms year after year? Certainly they have been doing something right to stay on voters’ radars.

“The first time around it was amazing to know that people were connecting with the show,” Alec Berg, co-showrunner of HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” which has been nominated for all four of its seasons, says. “The most recent nominations feel great because it means we haven’t totally flushed the show down the toilet.”

Ask the showrunners of the veteran comedies that got Emmy noms this year how they keep the funny going, and a couple of commonalities emerge. For one, showrunners »
