Rickey Smith, American Idol Season 2 Finalist, Dead at 36

6 May 2016 9:29 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

American Idol Season 2 finalist Rickey Smith was killed in a multi-car accident Thursday night, according to TMZ.

Smith, who memorably donned a disco-fabulous Afro wig for a performance of Earth Wind and Fire’s “Let’s Groove” and wound up finishing eighth behind Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, was 36.

He was also known for smiling and chanting “Hercules! Hercules!” during his run on the show.

According to TMZ, Smith’s vehicle was hit head-on by another car traveling the wrong way down Oklahoma’s I-240. That driver was booked for DUI.

Several of Smith’s Idol compatriots took to social »

The Lonesome Death of 'American Idol'

8 April 2016 6:37 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

American Idol has a lot in common with the country it's named after — a swift rise, fueled by lofty populist ideals and naked aggression, world conquest, such giddy heights, then the tragic skid into despair and and it's all somehow Fox's fault. The end of the Idol empire should have been a much bigger deal. It should have been an event. But instead, last night's farewell episode just kind of dribbled away, like the final season overall. "Let's do a Bowie tribute, except instead of Adam Lambert or Fantasia, we'll »

Kieran, turn out the lights.

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

Before 'American Idol' ends, here are 10 performances I loved

7 April 2016 2:13 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

American Idol season 1 debuted about a week after The Wire season 1 did. Though my TV tastes over the years trended much more towards complicated scripted dramas like the latter, I spent a long time watching the former, and enjoying it in the moments when the series wasn't busy padding its run time with inanities (like the entire judging career of Randy Jackson) and simply let the contestants sing. Often, those performances were just overpraised photocopies of the original moments, but when an Idol singer put their own stamp on a familiar tune, or dug up an obscurity and made it sound like a hit, I couldn't begrudge the series its enormous popularity. Eventually, the show got too repetitive for me to stick with, especially as more and more scripted options rose up demanding my attention. The last time I watched an Idol season from start to finish was the 9th, »

Farewell for Now, American Idol, and Thanks for All the Memories

7 April 2016 1:41 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Season 10 of American Idol. Top 4 results night. May 12, 2011.

I remember it vividly, joyfully — but not just because the exceptional Haley Reinhart (who’d been enduring egregious sabotage from judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson) improbably survived over rocker dude James Durbin. Mostly, the date is blazed into my memory because of a surprise delivery I’d received a few hours earlier from the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services: Three-month-old foster twins, ridiculously cute boys whom my husband and I had only learned about earlier that morning.

Trent Harmon Won 'American Idol' Over La'Porsha Renae: Right or Wrong Call?

7 April 2016 6:57 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Update: Another white guy from the South has done it: Trent Harmon won Season 15, making him our final American Idol. Both Trent and La'Porsha were strong talents, and Trent earned his fan support, but that makes 10 male winners and only five female winners in the history of the series. Is it just coincidence? Were the men just that much better or did the demographic shift toward favoring men over the course of the series? Four of the five women (Kelly, Fantasia, Carrie, Jordin) won their seasons in the first six years, and then we fell into the white guys with guitars trope that was occasionally just white guys from the South or cute white guys from wherever. Point to ponder: If Kelly Clarkson competed on a season in the past five or six years, would she have won?
