Jessica Biel Primed To Take Role in Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes

22 December 2011 3:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It may have a terribly off-putting title (and let’s face it, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever standard terrible) but ‘Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes’ backs that up with an even more off-putting premise.

Emanuel is a troubled 17-year-old girl who babysits her new neighbour Linda’s “baby,” which is actually a very life-like doll. She goes along with the delusion while befriending Linda, who happens to be the spitting image of her late mother.

After acting in Francseca Gregorini’s egregiously insufferable previous feature Tanner Hall newly appointed movie star Rooney Mara was slated to play the titular Emanuel before scheduling conflicts got in the way. Now Skins alumni Kaya Scodelario has stepped in and news is that Jessica Biel is in final talks to maniacally inhabit the shoes of the nutty neighbour.

Scodelario’s Emanuel was previously described as “a young, troubled woman who becomes obsessed with her mysterious, »

Jessica Biel Ready to Sign For Indie ‘Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes’

21 December 2011 5:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Seems like a big sector of movie news this week is about Rooney Mara, even when it isn't. The actress, starring now in David Fincher's version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (and killing it, I might add) was in a 2009 film called Tanner Hall that didn't get much distribution or attention. A peek at the trailer [1] for the movie might suggest the reason for the film's minor profile. Still, Mara was set to play the title role [2] in Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes from Tanner Hall director Francseca Gregorini until scheduling got in the way. (Suggesting that David Fincher was talking about A Nightmare on Elm Street rather than Tanner Hall when he said of Mara [3], "I know that her first foray into being the center of a movie was an incredibly draining, unproductive and bad experience for her.") Now Kaya Scodelario will play that role »

Total Recall and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre star, Jessica Biel is in final talks to play a mother named Linda, struggling with the death of her child in moving independent drama Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes. The actress will appear in the film directed by Tanner Hall helmer Francesca Gregorini. Her character becomes damaged and delusional following her child’s death and deals with the situation by caring for a baby doll who she believes is actually alive.

Skins starlet Kaya Scodelario will play 17-year-old neighbour Emanuel, who befriends Linda and plays along with her scenario, and even playing babysitter. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’s Rooney Mara was originally set to take the role of Linda (reuniting with her Tanner Hall director) until shooting was pushed back to early next year.

Jessica Biel Finds Truth About Fishes

20 December 2011 10:21 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Switching up the big studio projects with the smaller indie fare has always seemed to be Jessica Biel's modus operandi. Fitting then, that Biel will be joining Kaya Scodelario in Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes, following her sci-fi ass-kicking in Len Wiseman's Total Recall. As reported last week, Scodelario replaced Rooney Mara in the drama that marks Francesca Gregorini's second directorial effort (following Tanner Hall). Early reports revealed that it's about a young girl who's obsessed with her neighbour because she bears an uncanny resemblance to her dead mother, and agrees to babysit said neighbour's child, which turns out to be a lifelike doll. We're now hearing that the neighbour's name is Linda, and that the doll is a surrogate, since Linda is dealing with the emotional after-effects of the death of her daughter. So it's not quite the bonkers Lars And The Real Girl-alike that it initially appeared. »

Jessica Biel will star alongside Kaya Scodelario in the indie thriller Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, which is being written and directed by one-half of the Tanner Hall duo Francesca Gregorini.

The film follows the bizarre relationship between a grieving mother (Jessica Biel), who has lost her child and now carries around a surrogate doll, and the seventeen-year-old babysitter that comes to take care of this very life-like doll. The young woman goes along with the delusion because the mother looks like her own mom, whom she lost years earlier.

Rooney Mara was originally set to play the babysitter, but had to drop out when the start date got pushed back from 2011 to 2012.

Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Kaya Scodelario, Jessica Biel. The film is directed by Francesca Gregorini. »

Jessica Biel's Catch of the Day: 'Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes'

20 December 2011 2:14 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Jessica Biel is more than just a pretty face... maybe.

Though the brunette beauty has leapt from TV to the silver screen, she still hasn't quite proven she's got the dramatic chops to hang in the big leagues. But that might be about to change, because Biel is currently in talks for a leading role in the upcoming thriller, "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes," Variety reports.

Helmed by Francesca Gregorini (co-director of the acclaimed "Tanner Hall"), the story focuses on Emanuel, a troubled 17-year-old girl, who befriends her new neighbor Linda (Biel) when she agrees to babysit Linda's "baby" — which is actually a very life-like doll. It turns out Linda is having a wee bit of trouble coping with the death of her child, while Emanuel is convinced that Linda is a spitting image of her late mother. In other words, these two are a perfect, if creepy, match. »

Jessica Biel Joins Indie Flick 'Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes'

20 December 2011 1:12 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As it turns out, losing Rooney Mara wasn't so bad. Originally attached to the lead role but bowing out for younger, more age appropriate and recently cast "Skins" star Kaya Scodelario, "Tanner Hall" co-director Francesca Gregorini's "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes" is getting a pretty nice boost of star power. Jessica Biel is set to take another stab at a dramatic turn, coming on board the production that has a pretty twisted little story. The film will center on Emanuel, a troubled 17-year-old girl who babysits her new neighbor Linda's "baby," which is actually a very life-like doll. She goes along with the delusion while befriending the neighbor, who happens to be the spitting image of Emanuel's late mother. Biel will take on the role of the delusional Linda, who is reeling from the death of her child (hence the doll). It's an interesting move for Biel, one »

Jessica Biel appears to be the latest name to join the cast of Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes . Variety reports that the actress is currently in negotiations for a leading role. Last week , it was revealed that Kaya Scodelario would be replacing the previously attached Rooney Mara in the lead of the Francesca Gregorini ( Tanner Hall ) film. Fishes is said to focus on a young girl (presumably Emanuel) and her obsession with a new neighbor's resemblance to her dead mother as the girl agrees to babysit the woman's lifelike doll. Biel would play the neighbor, Linda, who has recently lost her own daughter and, due to shock, treats the doll as a surrogate. The former Undeclared actor has signed on to star in The Rebel Kind, based on a memoir by John Armstrong. Reg Harkema (Monkey Warfare) has written the script and is set to direct, with Patrick Carroll, Andria Spring, and Kevin Eastwood producing. The Rebel Kind will shoot next fall in Vancouver. Kaya Scodelario Takes Rooney Mara’s Place On ‘Truth About Fishes’

14 December 2011 11:38 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Let’s chalk this one up to a burgeoning career. As Variety tells us, Rooney Mara won’t reunite with Tanner Hall c0-helmer Francesca Gregorini on Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, but the project has landed Kaya Scodelario as a replacement. Not a big name at the moment, but she did lead Andrea Arnold‘s Wuthering Heights, which we loved at this year’s Tiff, and has the distinction of being one of the five or so non-Sam Rockwell actors in Moon. She’s most recognized across the pond for a starring role on Skins — or, as it’s known to me, “that British show where teenagers have sex ad nauseum.”

Written by Gregorini, the story is centered on “Emanuel, a troubled 17-year-old girl who babysits her new neighbor’s ‘baby,’ which is actually a very life-like doll.” After a short while, she ends up “befriending the neighbor, »
