Exclusive: Ben Barnes Talks The Seventh Son and The Chronicles of Narnia

1 November 2011 1:21 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

I recently got the chance to speak with actor Ben Barnes, who was promoting his new movie Killing Bono, which hits theaters November 4. We also talked about several of his upcoming projects, including The Seventh Son. Here's what he had to say about the Sergey Bodrov adaptation, which begins production in March.

"I think The Seventh Son starts shooting in March. At the moment, I hear it's going to be Vancouver and China. I've seen some of the artwork for it, and it looks like nothing I've ever seen. Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors in the history of ever. After working with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, and previously I've worked with Colin Firth, and working with Jeff Bridges next year, I'm surrounding myself with my idols. There's no better way to learn than that, really. I don't know how I've managed to get here."

[Viff Review] Pure

4 October 2011 11:00 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

What’s worse than giving sex to a married man for money? Giving it for love. It’s a tough distinction to delineate for a reformed twenty-year old prostitute whose only role model growing up was a drug-addled, suicidal mother that more or less taught her the business. Hoping for redemption and a ‘cleaner’ life, Katarina (Alicia Vikander) has vowed to never go back and instead cherish her boyfriend Mattias (Martin Wallström)—the one decent male in Sweden who doesn’t yell whore at her on the streets. Unfortunately, while the purity of one’s soul and a genuine hope for love is nice on paper, finding it quickly after the hardships endured from her past is unrealistic. She is too susceptible to kindness; too willing to believe anyone outside of her suburban slum is good. While the title may be Till det som är vackert [Pure], the lead character is anything but. »

Joe Wright to Direct ‘Anna Karenina’ Adaptation, Provide High School Teachers with Sexy Reading Tie-in

8 September 2011 4:49 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Focus Features has just announced a helmer for their Anna Karenina adaptation penned by Tom Stoppard, and while it’s a bit of a no-duh assignment, it’s still a very fine one. Joe Wright will direct the film, adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic (read: every high school kid is assigned to read it, and none of them ever do) novel. Despite my more bookwormish tendencies, my familiarity with Anna Karenina is quite lacking, so we’ll turn to Focus’ plotline for the film, which tells us that “the story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.” Also, it’s Russian and it’s Tolstoy, so it’s also not a feel-good work by »

Joe Wright To Direct 'Anna Karenina'

8 September 2011 2:59 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Joe Wright's adaptation of "Anna Karenina" has been in that awkward place between "done deal" and misty could-fall-apart for much of 2011.  Cast members flitted in and out, rumors swirled, and Wright was said to be waiting on Saoirse Ronan and James McAvoy before settling down to actually direct. But now it's a go! Wright is officially directing "Anna Karenina" with Keira Knightley as the doomed titular heroine,  Jude Law as her cuckolded husband Aleksei Karenin, and Aaron Johnson as the dashing Count Vronsky.  They headline a very exciting and glittery cast that includes Kelly MacDonald, Matthew Macfayden, and Emily Watson.    (He may not have gotten Ronan or McAvoy, but he still managed to reunite with two of his former leads in Knightley and Macfayden.) I'm actually really excited for this.  I'm a sucker for a good literary adaptation, and Wright has proved he can work magic with classics of »
