Gabriela Pilcher’s Amateurs will open the festival and also compete for the lucrative Dragon Award for best Nordic film (full list of competition titles below).
Pilcher, who previously directed festival hit Eat Sleep Die, presents the world premiere of her second feature, which is about a small town in Sweden that hopes to revive its economic activity by bringing in a German discount supermarket. The supermarket brand asks local teenagers to make films about their hometown, but the films don’t turn out as expected.
The festival’s new prize, the Dragon Award for best international film, will be fought over by 20 international films that will be voted on by the festival audience for a $6,000 (Sek 50,000) prize.

Last year, the three most popular films in the Us had female leads, with Star Wars: The Last Jedi at No 1, followed by Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman in third place. And there’s plenty more where they came from. Hollywood is still waking up to its masculinity problem, but 2018 looks as if it could be the year powerful women roar on screen in female-driven sci-fi, action blockbusters and super-sleuth thrillers.

Juliette Binoche will be joining fellow Oscar winner Alicia Vikander at the 2018 Göteborg Film Festival. The fest has announced the French actress as the recipient of the Honorary Dragon Award. As previously confirmed, Vikander will be accepting the Nordic Honorary Dragon Award. In addition to receiving the award, Binoche will hold a Master Class and the fest will hold a retrospective of her work.
Previous recipients of the Honorary Dragon Award include actress-director Liv Ullman and director Margarethe von Trotta.
Binoche commented, “First I want to thank Göteborg Film Festival for this honorary award, I take it as a wink, a tap on the shoulder, or even a hug! Juliette Binoche will receive the Honorary Dragon Award at the 2018 Göteborg Film Festival (26 Jan – 5 Feb).
Binoche, whose films include The English Patient and Three Colours: Blue, will receive her award at the festival on Feb 3 and hold a masterclass the following day.
She has also selected Scenes From A Marriage for a special retrospective as part of the event’s celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Ingmar Bergman’s birth.
Göteborg Film Festival will also honour Binoche with a retrospective of her films.
