22 September 2011 3:12 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Exclusive: After setting up a couple of TV projects with other writers in the first development season of his recently launched Sony Pictures TV-based production company, Easy A and Friends with Benefits director Will Gluck has sold one that he will be writing. The untitled high-concept single-camera comedy landed at ABC with a sizable penalty. Its logline is being kept under wraps but word is that it is about an angel expelled from heaven who is sentenced to live in New York City. UTA-repped Gluck started off as a TV writer, working on such series as Working and Grosse Point and creating 2, Luis and The Loop, before he segued to features. His company is behind 2 other Sony TV-produced comedy projects that sparked heated bidding wars this season, ensemble comedy Walk Of Shame, penned by Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael, which went to ABC, and a mocumentary written by Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, »

ABC Nabs Casey Wilson/June Raphael ‘Walk Of Shame’ Comedy Produced By Will Gluck

13 September 2011 9:30 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

In yet another competitive situation surrounding a comedy pitch this season, ABC has landed a single-camera comedy to be written by Saturday Night Live alumna Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael and produced by Sony Pictures TV and Will Gluck’s studio-based company. Titled Walk of Shame, the comedy revolves around a group of twentysomething friends in New York and features an opening scene about an embarrassing situation followed by flashbacks of the events that led to it. Wilson, Raphael and Gluck are executive producing. Walk of Shame expands Wilson’s relationship with ABC and Sony TV — she co-stars on the ABC/Sony sophomore comedy Happy Endings. Wilson and Raphael, who met in a clown class at Nyu, are long-time writing and stage partners and best friends. They have performed together at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and co-wrote the feature Bride Wars. This is the second TV sale under »

NBC Nabs Comedy Project From Will Gluck With Production Commitment

25 August 2011 5:21 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Exclusive: After a fierce bidding war between NBC and ABC followed by a lengthy negotiation, NBC has nabbed a mocumentary-style comedy from Mastermind writers Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, Sony Pictures TV and Will Gluck’s Sony-based production company. The project, which received interest from all four major broadcast networks, has been given a pilot production commitment. The untitled project, previously known as The Yard, presents the life lessons of elementary school as seen through the lens of an Office-like documentary. The similarity in style between The Yard and NBC’s The Office made NBC a natural choice for the project from the get-go. This is the second mega deal for Sony TV this week. The studios also scored a script with penalty commitment from Fox for a highly sought-after 1980s comedy from Breaking In co-creator Adam F. Goldberg while also securing the 13-episode second-season pickup of the previously canceled Breaking In. »

Summer Of Comedy: Projects From Adam Goldberg & Will Gluck Spark Bidding Wars

22 August 2011 11:07 AM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Exclusive: Comedies continue to be white-hot this pitch season. The latest to spark major bidding wars are an 1980s half-hour from Breaking In co-creator Adam F. Goldberg and a mocumentary-style comedy from Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, co-writers of DreamWorks Animation's Megamind. Both projects hail from Sony TV, which has been very aggressive at the onset of this development season, as well as two of the studio's highest-profile pods: Happy Madison (the Goldberg project) and Will Gluck's company (the Schoolcraft/Simons project), which in May signed a two-year development and production deal with Sony for film and TV. Both comedies have received interest from all four major broadcast networks and will likely command series/production commitments. For the Gluck-produced comedy, I hear the field has been narrowed to ABC and NBC, while for the Goldberg project it is still wide open. The Adam Goldberg project is described as an »

Early Edition: Justin Lin Exits 'Highlander,' Penguins Get a Helmer, Scott Glenn Gets More Work

12 August 2011 1:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Justin Lin is so hot right now, coming off the success of 'Fast Five,' that he's turning down projects. Case in point: The director -- who's lining up another edition of the fast car franchise and possibly a new Terminator movie -- had to take his name off the Summit Entertainment remake of 1986's 'Highlander.' The reason: Summit is anxious to get the ball rolling on a new franchise now that 'Twilight' is fading out, and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin's timetable didn't sync up with Summit's desire to move sooner rather than later on the film, which already has a script ready to go. So Summit is out there looking for a new director. Any thoughts?

Those pesky 'Madagascar' penguins are back -- with a movie all their own. Back in March, DreamWorks announced that they were going to develop a spin-off for the quartet, »

Penguins Spin-Off From ‘Madagascar’ to Be Directed by ‘Bee Movie’ Co-Helmer

11 August 2011 3:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Briefly: The animated Madagascar spin-off movie [1] intended to showcase the four scene-stealing pengiuns from that series now has a director. Simon Smith, who co-directed Bee Movie for Dreamworks, is now set to hold the reins on the film, which was fast-tracked back in March. That was when Megamind writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons were hired to script. The penguins have proven to be one of the most popular aspects of the Mardagascar films and have already been given their own short, and an animated show on Nickelodeon. We still don't have any new info on the story or casting for this one, but with a director in place that should all be announced sooner rather than later. Smith, who previously co-directed Bee Movie , will direct the as-of-yet-untitled project with a script from Megamind writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons. Megamind

Stars (the voices of): Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross | Written by Alan J. Schoolcraft, Brent Simons | Directed by Tom McGrath

Rocketed to earth as a baby, evil blue genius Megamind (Will Ferrell) plots the destruction of his rival, the superhero Metro Man (Brad Pitt) and plans to take over Metro City (mispronounced by our antihero in such a way that it rhymes with ‘monstrosity’). He is aided and abetted by Minion (David Cross), a fish in control of a robotic gorilla body. When Megamind accidently defeats Metro Man, he is free to take over the city, but he quickly becomes bored with success and goes about creating a new hero to fight. Meanwhile, intrepid reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey) serves a romantic interest/serial kidnap victim.

Following shortly behind the similarly themed Despicable Me, Megamind takes the established beats and tropes of the superhero movie and skews them, »

'Hunger Games' Casting Rumors, Lily Collins as Snow White and Renner for 'Bourne'?

2 April 2011 11:13 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I'm going to lead things off with big news from the Bourne universe. We've reported on the supposed "shortlist" of actors being considered to replace Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy, and Latino Review exclusively revealed that the offer is about to go out to Jeremy Renner (who wasn't even on the the list). This would be just one more notch in the belt of Jeremy Renner, who has secured his current "that guy" status. Already with roles in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Avengers and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (set pics of that one here), we'll be seeing plenty of Renner over the next couple of years. I do think Renner is a good choice, but can he really be considered the "future" of two huge spy franchises at the same time?

It should be noted that shortlist contender Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Sucker Punch) was writer/director Tony Gilroy's first choice, »

DreamWorks Pipeline: ‘Madagascar’ Penguins Spin-Off & The End of Kodachrome

DreamWorks has two new projects entering its pipeline: a spin-off film based on the penguins from Madagascar, and project focusing on the last days of the last photolab to develop Kodachrome film. [THR]

The studio bought Jonathan Tropper‘s pitch for the Kodachrome project, to be scripted by Tropper based on an article by the New York Times writer A.G. Sulzberger. Kodachrome color reversal film was manufactured for 74 years in a variety of types including 8mm, Super 8, 16mm, 35mm, and large formats for still photography. It was widely admired for its archive quality and was immortalized by Paul Simon in his famous pop song of the same name. (And if you’re not up on your 70′s pop tunes, the song was featured in a montage sequence in The Coneheads movie.)

The Kodachrome project is being developed by 21 Laps Entertainment, whose co-partner Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy may helm the picture. »

Megaminds Get To Work on a Movie for the ‘Madagascar’ Penguins

30 March 2011 9:03 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If you steal enough scenes, you’ll end up becoming the star. That’s the theory at least, and it seems to have worked beautifully for the tuxedo-esque Madagascar comic relief known as Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico – voiced by Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Christopher Knights, and John Dimaggio respectively. The screenwriters behind Megamind, Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons are currently working on a feature film to follow-up the success of the characters that’s already spilled over into their own special short and television show. This is actually pretty cool. You’ve got proven characters that are consistently funny, Megamind was on the higher end of children’s flick quality, and with Mr. Popper’s Penquins, it seems like there’s a new trend emerging. Pretty soon Young Adult novels will focus on teenage girls falling irrevocably in love with cold-hearted, way-too-casual penguins. Here’s another opportunity for DreamWorks to prove themselves in a Pixar-dominated world »
