The Flickering Myth Reaction to Thor’s Sex Change

16 July 2014 10:58 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing staff weigh in with their thoughts on Marvel’s change to Thor…

It was announced yesterday that Thor would be getting quite the make-over and a female will be taking over the mantle of The God of Thunder. As tweeted yesterday by Jason Aaron, this is not “She-Thor” or “Lady-Thor”, this is the new look for Thor.

But what did our writing staff make of the change?

Tom Roach: Changing the gender of a beloved character such as Thor is a bold move for Marvel, but it is worth trying out. This is still only happening in the medium of comic books and will not be shown on the big screen for some time. However this will likely show the love for female characters and could lead to development of female marvel characters such as Ms Marvel. Whilst some may hate the fact this has »

The Flickering Myth Reaction – The Expendables 3 Trailer

18 June 2014 7:11 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing staff give their thoughts on the trailer for The Expendables 3….

You can watch the trailer here.

Boom! Crash! Explosion!

That’s more or less what the trailer for The Expendables 3 involves. But for some more insightful thoughts, let’s look at what the Flickering Myth writing staff thought of the first full trailer for the third part of The Expendables trilogy…

Scott Davis: I enjoyed Expendables 2 more than the first, so I am looking forward to this one. It’s 80s action fan nirvana cranked up to 11 with Ford, Gibson, Snipes and Banderas involved. Can’t wait!

Ozzy Armstrong: Best blockbuster of 2014? Hells yeah. Loved both the first and second and this looks like another slice of fried gold. Genuinely can’t wait.

Luke Owen: My grin got wider and wider as the trailer went on. Just great stuff. Who would have »

The Flickering Myth Reaction – Dumb and Dumber To trailer

12 June 2014 8:15 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing and editorial team give their thoughts on the trailer for Dumb and Dumber To….

It may be 20 years after the original, but Harry and Lloyd are back for Dumb and Dumber To, the trailer for which was released yesterday.

But what did our writing team think?

Ozzy Armstrong: I might be one of the few people born in the mid 80’s who didn’t enjoy the first film so a sequel seems completely redundant to me. Besides not liking the first Dumb and Dumber, I’m not a massive a fan of Jim Carrey either – so that probably doesn’t help.

As far as the trailer itself goes, I’m assuming that all of the “funny bits” were on show. This only makes me think that the end result will most likely be a big steaming unfunny turd of a picture. In short, I really couldn’t care less. »

For the best part of the past year, we’ve been referring to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel as Batman vs. Superman and now with filming on the big DC ensemble underway, we’ve got an official logo and new title in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Yes, it’s very similar indeed to the placeholder title, with Warner Bros. deciding to drop the ‘s’ from ‘vs.’, and throw in a subtitle that makes it clear the film is building towards Justice League (just in case the addition of Batman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg hadn »

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the first look at Ben Affleck’s Batman

14 May 2014 12:44 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing team share a few thoughts on the first look at Ben Affleck in the Batsuit….

DC fans haven’t had much to shout about over the best part of the past year, having to sit twiddling their thumbs waiting on news while Marvel Studios, Sony and Fox laid out their superhero plans for the next few years, as well as delivering the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, since the announcement of a Justice League movie, we’ve had the DC shows The Flash, Gotham and Constantine all picked up, and yesterday Zack Snyder sent the internet into meltdown by releasing the very first image of Ben Affleck as The Dark Knight in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman. So, what did our writers make of the new Batsuit? »

Marvel Studios may have started rolling out its latest Phase Two offering in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it was Avengers: Age of Ultron that grabbed most of the Cinematic Universe headlines this week as principal photography on Joss Whedon's hotly-anticipated sequel got underway in Italy (doubling for Serbia). The shoot revolved around a big action sequence, with Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) battling a load of guys in mocap suits, as well as a stand in for James Spader's Ultron. »

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer

29 March 2014 1:25 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Flickering Myth writing team look at the trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles....

It's a movie that is hated by the fact is it exists and the man behind the cash that funded it. But the trailer for the Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles landed online yesterday (watch it here). Was it good? Was it bad? Let's see what our writing team thought....

Anthony Stokes: Looks extremely similar to the Transformers movies, which is no doubt intentional.

Chris Cooper: I am not disgusted. Which considering how I thought I'd feel is quite an achievement! Look, with Bay and Fox involved I'm not expecting magic. But so far it looks Ok. The snow setting is interesting and I like the look of the Brothers working together. Over time I may even become accustomed to their chins and noses (which I think is why I'm not quite connecting »

Blu-ray Review - Gravity (2013)

Gravity, 2013.

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron.

Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Synopsis:

Disaster strikes on a routine spacewalk, leaving seasoned astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) and medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) completely alone and drifting in space.

In a case of perfect timing, director Alfonso Cuaron's taut, space-set thriller Gravity arrives on Blu-ray and DVD today in the UK, fresh from its success at last night's Academy Awards, where it dominated the night with seven awards in total (Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects).

Unless you've been living under a rock (or in outer space) for the past six months, I'm sure you're aware of the plot for Gravity, which is an exercise in simplicity itself. During a routine repair-job, two astronauts - veteran Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) and first timer Dr. Ryan »

Short Film Review - Sophie's Fortune (2012)

Gary Collinson reviews Sophie's Fortune...

I first became aware of the work of Northern director Chris Cronin when I had the pleasure of watching his award-winning 2011 short Ante, a tight and suspenseful thriller which clearly demonstrated Chris' potential as a filmmaker. Since Ante, he's partnered up with rising producer Phil Meachem on a series of shorts, including the "action sketch" Hail of Bullets and the musical romance Moments, not to mention their most recent offering, the ambitious action-adventure Sophie's Fortune.

Turning up late to a children's birthday party with his young niece Sophie, Brandon (Simon Hardwick) looks to make amends for missing out on all the cake and sweets by taking part in the annual Father's Only treasure hunt, hoping to win the prize put a smile on Sophie's face. Unfortunately for Brandon, the fathers take this tradition seriously - very seriously - and soon he finds himself racing through an Amazonian-like rainforest, »

Well, it's hardly an extravaganza, but rather a short thank you...

Yes, it's our fifth birthday today, and as we cut into our cake here at Flickering Myth, I just wanted to say a big thank you to our fabulous writing team for their continued hard work and commitment, and of course our lovely readers, who've helped the site grow beyond anything I ever expected that it could be back in 2009 when I fancied writing an article on the box office chances of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Watchmen.

It's been another great twelve months for the site, and we've got some exciting plans in the pipeline which will hopefully mean that Year Six is even better, but before then, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate this milestone by looking back on our five most popular articles on Flickering Myth...

Review - Morphsuits' Amazing Spider-Man Marvel Costume

Gary Collinson tries out Morphsuits' Amazing Spider-Man costume...

Spider-SelfieI'm Spider-Man... Okay, so maybe an aging Spider-Man carrying a few extra pounds is a more apt description, but having spent the best part of the last day dressed as Marvel's friendly neighbourhood web-slinger, I'm about ready to head out onto the streets to take out a gang of punks while cracking wise. All I'm missing is super powers. And web-shooters. Fortunately, thanks to the wonders of augmented reality, I can pretend I've got both. In the comfort of my living room, obviously.

So, what is it that's got me feeling like The Amazing Half-Arsed Spider-Man? That would be Morphsuits' new range of Marvel costumes (more specifically, Morpsuits' Spidey costume), which are described as "the most advanced superhero costumes [which] using wearable technology and augmented reality, actually appear to bring the superhero's powers to life." Is that hyperbole? Well, possibly, but there's no »
