We’ve a trio decidedly different posters for a few of the uniquely horrific upcoming offerings.
First we have a new creepy one-sheet from Chad Crawford Kinkle’s controversial suspense thriller Jug Face. The film reunites The Women’s Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers in a dark story of teenager Ada, who is pregnant with her brother’s child. Trying to escape from her hick backwoods community, she discovers she is to be sacrificed to a mysterious creature lurking in the small town’s pit. An equally disturbing tag line makes this festival favourite a one to watch out for! If you missed the trailer you can find it here. No word yet on any release details.
Next up is the first look at comedic double-act Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon’s directorial debut and Sundance hit, Hell Baby. The comic-horror follows an expectant couple (played by Rob Corddry »

A re-imagining of the 1980's splatterhouse feature; Maniac stars Elijah Wood (The Lord of The Rings) and is directed by Franck Khalfoun (P2). The film is scheduled for theatrical release on June 21st. The movie is shot mostly from the Pov of the killer, portrayed by Wood. Frank (Elijah Wood), a man - haunted by seedy memories of his promiscuous mother - who works in a mannequin shop by day and stalks 'n kills women by night. Things take a turn in his life when he meets a beautiful photographer (Nora Arnezeder). Remember Elijah Wood's creepy silent performance as the serial killer Kevin in the 2005 classic Sin City? Well, take that role and amplify it to the point of severe discomfort and then watch the entire movie through the murderer's eyes. Or to be more precise and cheesy -- »

Frank (Elijah Wood) is a lonely small business owner looking for love in all the wrong places. Sure, he meets a few girls through online dating services, but none of them work out beyond the first date. Though to be fair to the women, the evenings only go sour around the point Frank decides to scalp them for not living up to his dead mother’s high standards. His life gets a jolt and a singular chance at happiness when a photographer named Anna (Nora Arnezeder) stops by his mannequin restoration shop and asks a favor. The two develop a friendship, perhaps the first Frank has known is his life, and he begins to fall for her. It’s the closest thing to real love he’s ever felt and she’s the closest to redemption that he’ll ever get. But happiness just isn’t in the cards for Frank, and »

When I saw Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead “remake” earlier this year, I couldn’t believe I was actually watching a horror remake. It was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale movement of churning out newer versions of old classics, with little success in the quality department of course. But I thought “surely this instance is a fluke, we couldn’t possibly have more than one good horror remake in the same year, right?” Then Franck Khalfoun came along, sternly pimp-slapped me across the face, and said “Matt, 2013 is the year of the horror remake,” and after watching his revamped version of Maniac (originally by William Lustig) – I absolutely, wholeheartedly f#cking agree.
Lustig’s original film was grimy, revolting, shock-and-awe horror with a slight voyeuristic twist – and Khalfoun keeps every essence of that description intact. Additionally though, Khalfoun’s film departs from Lustig’s straight-forward B-Movie, »

The film iscripted by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur, based on the 1980 movie of the same title by William Lustig. I haven't seen the original, but this looks most-intriguing. Beyond The Hills (12A)
(Cristian Mungiu, 2012, Rom) Cosmina Stratan, Cristina Flutur. 152 mins
Romanian patriarchy had a lot to answer for in Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, and it's even more to blame in this powerful convent drama. It starts with a young woman coming to visit her former girlfriend, who's now a nun, but events increasingly spiral out of control, to the extent that romantic frustration is diagnosed as demonic possession… and duly treated.
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (15)
(Don Scardino, 2013, Us) Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey. 100 mins
Doing for Vegas-style magic what Blades Of Glory did for figure skating, Carell and co conjure just enough comedy out of a sitting-duck premise, as their cheesy stage act is threatened by Carrey's Blaine-style endurance stunts.

Franck Khalfoun's gruesome Los Angeles-set serial-killer thriller pulls off the feat of being gut-wrenchingly horrible and dreary
Elijah Wood stars in this very gruesome serial-killer thriller, based on the VHS cult shocker from 1980. He's Frank, who lives in a dark and creepy warehouse, making a living (presumably) from leasing out store mannequins, which he painstakingly restores. His other hobby is stalking, killing and scalping attractive young women on the streets of La, putting their hair on his mannequins, and pretending they're his mum. Attractive photographer Anna (Nora Arnezeder) unknowingly befriends Frank, fascinated by his work. Can she redeem him? Don't bet your life savings on it. The movie is shot from Frank's point of view, and it does have some ingenious and effective moments of horror. I found it intestine-squishingly horrible, but also dreary.

Director: Franck Khalfoun.
Starring: Elijah Wood, Nora Arnezeder, Megan Duffy, America Olivo.
Running Time: 89 minutes.
Certificate: 18.
Synopsis: Frank (Elijah Wood) is an attractive yet awkward shop owner with a fetish for scalps. As his mental state worsens when a young artist, Anna (Nora Arnezeder) enters his life, his potent thirst for blood threatens to ruin any chance of a normal friendship.
Opening to slick city streets and electronic beats, Franck Khalfoun’s remake of William Lustig’s 1980 cult horror is reminiscent of the Los Angeles presented in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. But don’t be fooled, as the contemporary city setting is soon unveiled as a dirty, dangerous place where the days are bathed in claustrophobic greyish hues and not even an apartment corridor or parking lot is safe.
The latest in a long line of 1980s remakes from The Karate Kid to Fright Night, it would be fair »
