Isla Fisher to Co-Star With Matthew McConaughey in ‘Beach Bum’ (Exclusive)
Isla Fisher is set to star opposite Matthew McConaughey in Harmony Korine’s next movie, “Beach Bum,” sources tell Variety.

The film will be a co-production between Neon and Vice with Neon, which bought the rights for the film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, handling distribution. CAA will be negotiating the domestic sales while Rocket Science handled international sales.

“Beach Bum” is a comedy that follows the misadventures of Moondog (McConaughey), a rebellious and lovable rogue who lives life large. Fisher will play Moondog’s wife.

The film will be written and directed by Korine, whose unique filmmaking style gained recognition with “Spring Breakers,” which starred James Franco and brought in $31 million at the worldwide box office.

Vice Media Backing Mia Wasikowska in ‘Judy and Punch’
Mia Wasikowska will star in “Judy and Punch,” a reimagining of the classic puppet show, that marks the directorial debut of Australian actress and writer Mirrah Foulkes (“Animal House”). The picture is produced by Vice Media Australia and Nash Edgerton’s Blue Tongue Films.

Principal finance is from Vice Media (USA), and Screen Australia, in association with Film Victoria. Cornerstone Films is attached for international sales.

Set in the fictional town of Seaside, the film follows two puppeteers – the vain but charismatic Punch and his resilient and talented wife Judy (Wasikowska). They attempt to resurrect their show as a means of escaping their decrepit town. Punch and Judy is a puppet play traditionally told with marionettes. The feature project originated with Vice Media’s chief commercial & creative officer Tom Punch and his sister Lucy Punch. It will begin filming in the Australian state of Victoria in April 2018.

Toronto: Netflix Buys Jim Carrey’s Andy Kaufman Documentary ‘Jim & Andy’
Netflix has bought worldwide rights to “Jim & Andy,” Chris Smith’s documentary about Jim Carrey’s portrayal of comedian Andy Kaufman.

The deal was announced Monday at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie uses approximately 100 hours of footage shot on the set of “Man on the Moon” documenting Carrey’s transformation into Kaufman for four months.

The Vice Documentary Films production premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is produced by Spike Jonze, and Vice FilmsDanny Gabai and Brendan Fitzgerald.

Eric Zumbrunnen, Editor of ‘Being John Malkovich,’ Dies at 52
Film editor Eric Zumbrunnen, who won an Ace Award for his work on “Being John Malkovich,” has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 52.

Zumbrunnen graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in journalism, and began his career editing music videos for the likes of Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, and Bjork, which is also where his fruitful relationship with Spike Jonze began. From there, he expanded into commercial editing for clients like Nike, Xbox, and Apple, as well was editing several documentary shorts and other short films, often for Jonze, eventually graduating into feature film editing alongside Jonze with “Being John Malkovich” in 1999.

Zumbrunnen’s work also included the Jonze’s 2009 film “Where the Wild Things Are,” Disney’s “John Carter” in 2012, and Jonze’s acclaimed film “Her,” which won the writer-director an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Neon, Vice pre-buy Harmony Korine's 'Beach Bum'
Matthew McConaughey to star in comedy.

Neon and Vice have pre-bought Us rights to Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum to star Matthew McConaughey.

Production is scheduled to begin in autumn on Korine’s follow-up to Spring Breakers in time for a 2018 theatrical release.

Rocket Science handles international sales and introduced the project at the Efm in Berlin.

The Beach Bum is an irreverent comedy about the misadventures of Moondog, a rebellious and lovable rogue who lives large.

Korine will direct from his screenplay. LeGrisbi Productions’ John Lesher, Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, Iconoclast’s Charles-Marie Anthonioz, Mourad Belkeddar and Nicolas Lhermitte will produce.

Neon’s Tom Quinn and Tim League serve as executive producers with Shane Smith, Eddy Moretti, and Danny Gabai for Vice.

Neon and Vice have pre-bought U.S. rights to Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” with Matthew McConaughey. The comedy about the misadventures of a lovable rogue (who else but the former Wooderson, McConaughey). It marks Korine’s follow-up to “Spring Breakers.”

Production will begin this fall. The film will hit theaters in 2018.

Korine will write, as well as direct. In addition to “Spring Breakers,” he wrote the script for “Kids,” the 1995 look at sexually active teens that pushed buttons. McConaughey won an Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club” and has starred in “Interstellar” and “A Time to Kill.” He will next appear in “The Dark Tower,” a Stephen King adaptation, and “White Boy Rick,” a crime drama.

Afm: Magnolia Pictures Buys Mick Rock Documentary ‘Shot!’
Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to British film and music video director Barnaby Clay’s documentary “Shot! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock.”

The movie, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, chronicles the life of rock photographer and artist Mick Rock, who captured David Bowie, Queen, Blondie, Iggy Pop, Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, and Lou Reed with his camera lens. Magnolia is targeting a 2017 theatrical release.

The pic is financed and produced by Vice Documentary Films and Straight Up Films, and co-produced by RockEye Productions. Magnolia Head of Worldwide Sales Scott Veltri is representing the film for Magnolia International at the American Film Market and all international rights are available.

Fox, Insurgent Backing Rory Culkin’s ‘Lords of Chaos’
Twentieth Century Fox and Insurgent Media have partnered with Vice Films and Chimney Pot to finance crime story “Lords of Chaos,” starring Rory Culkin.

The project was first unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival in May with Swedish film and music-video director Jonas Akerlund helming the English-language film. It centers on the Norwegian heavy metal band Mayhem, known for violent stage performances and the 1993 murder of guitarist Øystein Aarseth (also known as Euronymous) by former member Varg Vikernes.

Production companies are Vice Films, Insurgent, Scott Free, Kwesi Dickson, Chimney Pot, and Eleven Arts. Fox has taken rights to North America, U.K., Scandinavia, and Brazil.

Culkin will play Euronymous. New cast members include Emory Cohen as “Varg,” Jack Kilmer playing “Dead,” Valter Skarsgård playing “Faust,” and Sky Ferreira as “Ann-Marit.”

Vice Films boards 'Lords Of Chaos'

The company will finance with Insurgent Media, 20th Century Fox and Chimney Pot the sensational story of Norwegian black metal band Mayhem.

Jonas Åkerlund, the Swedish music video director and former drummer with heavy metal band Bathory, will direct the film from a screenplay he co-wrote.

Rory Culkin (pictured) will play Euronymous aka Øystein Aarseth, the leader of the band that popularised the True Norwegian Black Metal movement who was stabbed to death by fellow band member Varg Vikernes in 1993.

The murder was the final act of in a history of notorious antics that saw the band linked to a church burning in 1992 that sparked a wave of arson attacks on churches across Norway.

Emory Cohen will portray Vikernes, while Jack Kilmer plays ‘Dead,’ Valter Skarsgård ‘Faust’ and Sky Ferreira ‘Ann-Marit’.

Vice’s TV Channel Announces Leadership Team Ahead Of February 29th Launch

This month, Vice will make a bold dive into the world of TV, and it will have some experienced executives at its helm. Filmmaker Spike Jonze, Vice Chief Content Officer Eddy Moretti, and former A&E exec Guy Slattery are the three people at the head of Viceland, a TV channel that will launch on February 29th.

Jonze, an Oscar winner, is a frequent Vice collaborator; his presence within the Viceland structure was announced alongside the channel last November. Nominations for the 2016 PGA Awards announced

The Producer’s Guild of America has announced that The Big Short, Bridge Of Spies, Brooklyn, Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Sicario, Spotlight and Straight Outta Compton will contest the 2015 Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures at the 2016 PGA Awards.

Traditionally, the majority of PGA Award nominees will also find themselves nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, given that they share many of the same voters. Which probably means bad luck for the likes of Carol and Room.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today the motion picture, long-form television, digital series, sports programs and additional television nominations for the 27th Annual Producers Guild Awards.

The categories include: The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures; The Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures; The David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television; Outstanding Sports Program; and Outstanding Digital Series. The feature documentary film category and other television category nominations were previously announced by the PGA in late 2015.
