Casting notes: Terence Stamp in Pan, Michael Caine in Now You See Me

3 November 2011 2:31 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Novelist Jm Barrie's Peter Pan was the boy who wouldn't grow up. He could fly and had various adventures on the island of Neverland.

He's never been portrayed as a serial killer - until now.

In new film Pan, a dark and rather perverse reimagining of the original children's classic, the character is a villain being hunted by police in the present-day USA.

Scripted by Benjamin Magid and directed by Ben Hibon, this crime thriller stars Aaron Eckhart (Two-Face in The Dark Knight; Battle Los Angeles) as Captain Hook, who is depicted as a detective tracking down the title character.

Hook's partner is Smee, played by Sean Bean, and Terence Stamp has now been confirmed for an unspecified role in the production. The actor playing Pan hasn't yet been announced.

AnnaSophia Robb plays Wendy, a young girl who escapes from Pan and teams with the police to help catch him. »

Terrence Stamp Gets Role in Fairy Tale Inspired Modern Thriller 'Pan'

1 November 2011 11:34 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

Towards the end of last year it was revealed that Ben Hibon, the man behind that animated sequence where Hermione tells The Tale of The Three Brothers and the history/myth of the Deathly Hallows in the first part of the epic two-part Harry Potter franchise finale, would be at the helm of a contemporary crime thriller simply called Pan that puts a thriller twist on the classic tale of Peter Pan from J.M. Barrie. Then we learned later Aaron Eckhart would play tormented former detective Captain Hook on the trail of a childlike kidnapper, and now Moviehole has learned that veteran actor Terrence Stamp has joined the cast as well. Personally, I'm hoping Stamp is playing the killer which Hook is chasing, but his role hasn't been revealed just yet. Either way, Sean Bean is playing Smee, the chief detective and Hook's only ally on the police force »

Terence Stamp Joins Crime Thriller Pan Starring Aaron Eckhart

1 November 2011 9:36 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

Terence Stamp has joined Ben Hibon's Pan, a dark re-imagining of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan.  Benjamin Magid's script twists the tale of a flying boy into a crime thriller where Captain Hook (Aaron Eckhart) is a detective and his partner Smee (Sean Bean) are tracking down a serial killer known as "Pan".  AnnaSophia Robb will play Wendy, "a young girl who escaped the clutches of Pan and teams with the police force to help catch him."  Moviehole doesn't have any details on who Stamp will play, and based on Peter Pan's cast of characters, I'm a little stumped on where an actor of Stamp's age and gravitas would fit.  Of course, it's possible he's playing a character outside of Barrie's novel, but in any case, Stamp is a welcome addition to any cast.  This is definitely a project to keep on your radar, not only because of the actors on board, »

Sucker Punch

27 June 2011 3:24 PM, PDT | | See recent Comicmix news »

We have come to love Zack Snyder’s visual style, attention to detail, and ability to adapt comics to the silver screen. But, we don’t really have a sense of what he can do on his, without someone else’s work to rely on for inspiration. That is, until this March when he unveiled Sucker Punch, a personal project that had been gestating in his mind for years and he finally was given the opportunity to make it a reality.

Some reality. The mind-bending storyline is a visually and aural feast but is somewhat soulless and cold, not just from the over-reliance on CGI for background and texture but for the total lack of attention to characterization. Like the computer backgrounds, everything is on the surface, giving the cast little to work with, turning them into two-dimensional players on his digital chessboard. Most of that explains why the film fizzled both critically and commercially. »

AnnaSophia Robb to Fly as Wendy in Dark Peter Pan

11 May 2011 8:56 AM, PDT | kidspickflicks | See recent kidspickflicks news »

A dark indie version of Peter Pan is in the works that looks at the boy-who-never-grew up tale a little differently. Put into our modern world, Pan is a horror-thriller which will have Aaron Eckhart (Battle: Los Angeles) as former police detective Captain Hook who is in pursuit of a kidnapper who acts like a child. AnnaSophia Robb (Race to Witch Mountain) will play Wendy, the only child to escape the kidnapper. Wendy must leave her safe house to help Hook and Chief Police Detective Smee (Sean Bean who played Zeus in Percy Jackson & the Olympians) find the villain. Ben Hibon will make his feature film directing debut with Pan; previously, he was the animation director for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.

The latest trend in Hollywood is to create darker spins on fairy tales and classic stories, We’ve had Alice In Wonderland, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (that although was Tim Burton led, wasn’t too dark), and the more recent Snow White tales, which are currently in production. Eckhart, Robb, and Bean Cast in Peter Pan Serial Killer Movie

10 May 2011 8:10 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

I gotta be honest with you, I don’t know what they’re thinking with this one. Sure, it’s fine to envision a classic as a “dark” tale, but damn, throwing in a serial killer? Yikes. I’m not exactly an expert on Peter Pan, but I’m reasonably certain there wasn’t a serial killer in the original tale. I could be wrong, of course. Anyways, there’s a new “take” on “Peter Pan” that Screen Daily says is set to be directed by Ben Hibon from a screenplay by Ben Magid. The film, which was originally intended as a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro, will re-imagine Captain Hook (Aaron EckHart) as “a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper.” Meanwhile, “Soul Surfer’s” AnnaSophia Robb will play Wendy, “the lone survivor who leaves an asylum to help in the hunt.” The ever-busy Sean Bean »

AnnaSophia Robb and Aaron Eckhart Join Dark Spin on 'Peter Pan'

10 May 2011 7:03 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

It's about time Peter Pan jumped (or flew, rather) onto the bandwagon of Hollywood's newfound interest in fairy tales.

Or "re-imagining" of fairy tales, anyway, as the story of NeverLand is getting quite the extreme makeover as "Pan," a dark thriller, according to ScreenDaily.

"Pan" will feature Aaron Eckhart as Hook, a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper. He's aided in his pursuit by his detective ally, Smee (Sean Bean), and his quarry's latest victim, Wendy (AnnaSophia Robb).

"Pan," written by Ben Magid ("Hack/Slash"), was first announced late last year as a possible directing gig for Guillermo del Toro. Ben Hibon, who directed the animation sequence in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1," has signed on to direct.

We're all for "re-imaginings" of fairy tales, especially when they embrace the dark side like this one, though we're not sure what the angle is »

Aaron Eckhart, Sean Bean And AnnaSophia Robb Join Dark ‘Peter Pan’ Film

10 May 2011 6:20 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

We’ve known Ben Hibon, the man who directed the animated sequence of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I (the best part of the film), would be directing a modern take on Peter Pan. Written by Ben Magrid and originally intended for Guillermo del Toro, this new,”noir-tinged” take on the classic story has Captain Hook “reconstructed as a former police detective in a tireless pursuit of a childlike kidnapper – Pan.”

ScreenDaily reports that it’s pulled in three impressive leads for its cast. They’re Aaron Eckhart, Sean Bean and AnnaSophia Robb. The first you probably know from The Dark Knight, the second from GoldenEye, Lord of the Rings and HBO’s Game of Thrones, while the last one earned positive reviews for her lead performance in Soul Surfer. Buyers are being sought at Cannes, and the commercial talent involved should help it find a home.

Contemporary Retelling Of Peter Pan Nabs Aaron Eckhart And Sean Bean

In November 2010, it was announced that Ben Hibon (animation director from the first installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) would be directing a contemporary update of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan in a mature twist of the classic children’s story. Although the title of the film is still in question, Ben Magid stated that the film’s original script (which may simply be titled Pan) has Captain Hook now playing a tormented former detective in a crime thriller. Today, Screen Daily reports that Aaron Eckhart will be playing Hook, Sean Bean is set for the role of Smee, the chief detective and Hook’s only ally on the police force.
