Director Gary Ross Defends Jennifer Lawrence’s Casting in ‘The Hunger Games’, Says Author Approves

18 March 2011 10:30 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Not everyone was thrilled with the casting of Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games, director Gary Ross' adaptation of the first in a trilogy of popular young adult novels written by Suzanne Collins. Despite her Oscar-nominated turn in Winter's Bone catching the attention of many a filmmaker and studio, some couldn't overlook the implications of her casting, and took the decision as yet another sign of Hollywood's creative and moral bankruptcy. The reasons are twofold: Age and appearance. The book's premise is based around teenagers killing each other, and without the young age of the combatants, an essential component of the story is lost. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, is 16-years-old. Jennifer Lawrence is 20, and looks like she could be even older. But by upping the age of the character(s), the subject matter of the film becomes more palatable to general audiences, opening up the film to a wider demographic -- and in turn, »

The Last Airbender dominates the Golden Raspberry Awards

28 February 2011 1:09 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The 83rd Academy Awards takes place today and as Hollywood gears up for its big night there are those who would argue that the whole awards season is little more than an excuse for industry back-slapping and mutual appreciation. However one ceremony that could never be accused of that is the Razzies - which of course aims to celebrate the very worst in cinematic achievement from the past twelve months - and the 'winners' of 2010 were revealed last night as the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards were presented at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre, Hollywood.

It was a bad night (again) for M. Night Shyamalan as his latest waste of celluloid The Last Airbender picked up the awards for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor (Jackson Rathbone) and Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-use of 3D, while Sex and the City 2 followed behind with three awards: Worst Actress (Sarah Jessica Parker, »

2011 Razzie Award Winners

28 February 2011 10:21 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

As predictable as the Oscars are, I think we can all agree that the Razzies are even more predictable. And as much as it pains me to post this, somehow Hollywood's big awards weekend does not feel complete without also acknowledging some of the lesser achievements in filmmaking from 2010. M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender and Sex and the City 2 dominated the voting, with Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba also getting singled out for their crimes against cinema. I still don't think The Last Airbender is anywhere close to being the worst movie of the year, but apparently I am in the minority. Check out the full list of Golden Raspberry winners after the jump. Worst Picture The Bounty Hunter The Last Airbender Sex & the City 2 Twilight Saga: Eclipse Vampires Suck! The Last Airbender Cleans Up At The Razzies

28 February 2011 4:19 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

The press screening I attended last summer for M Night Shyamalan’s dreadful The Last Airbender was special. I’d never heard so much laughter in my life. But Airbender isn’t meant to be funny. Unfortunately when ever characters said ‘bender’ in the film, the place erupted into howls – no, gales – of laughter.

Then we all sat through a press conference where M Night Shyamalan talked bollocks for thirty minutes. The annual Razzie awards have been announced in a ceremony across the pond and Shyamalan won big! So did Sex and the City 2. That was a movie that made me question my whole existence. Sitting through two hours and twenty minutes was a punishment undeserved.

Below is a list of this years illustrious nominees and winners. I don’t agree with Jessica Alba’s win at all, or Ashton Kutcher’s, for that matter. And picking on Twilight is beyond boring. »

Jessica Alba Finally Picks Up Her First Razzie

27 February 2011 4:48 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Getting a nomination for Razzie Awards isn't something new for Jessica Alba. In fact, the "Little Fockers" actress received her fifth Razzie nomination at the 31st Annual Razzie Awards. What made it different for her this year was the fact that she finally ended up with a Golden Raspberry trophy.

At the ceremony taking place at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre on Saturday night, February 26, the 29-year-old was named the Worst Supporting Actress for her roles in "Little Fockers", "The Killer Inside Me", "Machete" and "Valentine's Day". She was voted the worst over fellow nominees Cher, Liza Minnelli, Nicola Peltz and Barbra Streisand.

Jessica's co-star in "Valentine's Day", Ashton Kutcher, also saw himself dubbed as a loser at the annual awards. The 33-year-old actor saved "Twilight Saga" stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner from winning Worst Actor as he snatched the title for his role in the romantic comedy as well »

2011 Razzie Award Winners

27 February 2011 1:40 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Voting members of The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation have sifted through the cinematic rubble of last year's Berry Worst Achievements in Film, and come up with the "winners" for The 31st Annual Razzie Awards. Results are announced in satirical ceremonies held at Hollywood's Barnsdall Gallery Theatre at 7:30pm Pst on Saturday, February 26, 2011 - the now traditional Night Before the Oscars.

Not quite sweeping the ceremony, but still handily leading the pack among this year's Razzie choices is Razzie Repeat Offender M. Night Shyamalan's "re-imagining" of the faux-anime' TV series The Last Airbender into a jumbled, jump-cut mess of a movie that fans of the TV show hated even more than critics did (if that's even possible!). In addition to Worst Director and Worst Picture, The Last Airbender also "won" Worst Screenplay, a brand-new Razzie category for 2010, Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D, and Worst Supporting Actor Jackson Rathbone (who »

Is "The Last Airbender" the Worst Movie of 2010? The M. Night Shyamalan Masterpiece Dominates Razzie Awards!

27 February 2011 11:34 AM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

This would hurt M. Night Shyamalan's supposed big ego. The director has been given the not-quite dubious achievement of having helmed a film that's considered the worst of 2010. Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" dominated the 31st annual Razzie Awards winning (or is it losing?) Worst Picture, Worst Director for Shyamalan, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor for Jackson Rathbone, and Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D!

And then the ladies of "Sex and the City 2" must console each other for their sequel (which I thought was actually better than the first) also won multiple "Worsts" such as Worst Actress (all four of them!), Worst Screen Couple/Ensemble, and Worst Sequel.

"Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Jonah Hex" remain unscathed by the Razzies. But is "The Last Airbender" really worse than "Vampires Suck" which also remain largely unharmed? Really?

Here's the complete list of winners (highlighted) and nominees of the 31st annual Razzie »

Winning an award on Oscar weekend is generally a time for celebration, but for M. Night Shyamalan and the ladies of "Sex and the City 2," Saturday night's near clean sweep at the 31st Annual Golden Raspberries was likely to inspire anything but. What a twist.

Created to (dis)honor the very worst in cinema during the previous year, the Razzies bestowed their top prize to Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender." Based on the anime series "Avatar," "Airbender" took home five trophies, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D and Worst Supporting Actor for co-star Jackson Rathbone.

The wins were a breakthrough of sorts for the director once thought to be among the very best of his generation, as Shyamalan's previous film, »

The Last Airbender, Shyamalan, "win" big at the Razzies

26 February 2011 8:35 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

It's that time of the year again, when the best and brightest of Hollywood and beyond assemble to honor the greatest in cinematic achievement with those prized little golden statues of peer admiration. But before we can get to all that, another esteemed organization has its day (the day before, to be exact) to call out the laziest, most witless, and most artlessly-hollow film releases of the year. Tonight, the 31st annual Golden Raspberry award winners were announced, 'honoring' the worst in film directing, acting, and production.

The biggest 'loser' of the night was undoubtedly The Last Airbender, which took home five small gold-painted raspberry statuettes, including Worst Picture and Worst Director for M. Night Shyamalan. Perhaps making up for bestowing only a handful of nominations, but no wins, on Shyamalan's dreadful The Happening in 2008, the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation may have hammered the final nail in Shyamalan's credibility coffin, »

'The Last Airbender' Wins (Fails) Big At Razzie Awards

26 February 2011 8:08 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Well, at least they were (relatively) kind to "Twilight."

Despite nominations for several Golden Raspberry Awards, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" managed to emerge from this year's Razzies unscathed, except for a Worst Supporting Actor win for Jackson Rathbone (poor Jasper).

However, Rathbone's "win" wasn't just for his performance in "Eclipse" -- it was also for his performance in "The Last Airbender," the poor, sad cinematic creature that also took home Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Eye-Gouging Use of 3-D (yikes!).

Hey, at least it didn't get Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel -- that honor went to "Sex and the City 2," which also won Worst Actress (for all four of its leading ladies) and Worst Screen Couple/Ensemble (for the entire cast).

Anyway, thank goodness that's all over with. The 2011 Razzie Awards took place on Saturday, Feb. 26 -- the complete list of nominees are listed below, »

Never mind the Oscars, it's the nominees for the Golden Raspberry Awards

27 January 2011 4:50 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Hollywood is gearing up for the annoucement of the Academy Award nominations tomorrow, but as is customary on the eve of the big reveal the Golden Raspberry Awards (or Razzies for short) have delivered their contenders for the very worst cinematic offerings of 2010 and boy, is it a hell of a strong field.

While the Best Picture Oscar is likely to come down to Tom Hooper's The King's Speech and David Fincher's The Social Network, I honestly have no idea which film is most deserving of the Razzies' 'not-at-all-coveted' Worst Picture award.

Anyway, here is the full list of nominees for the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards...

Big Surprise… Twilight and The Last Airbender Lead the 2011 Razzie Nominations

25 January 2011 6:13 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

This year's Academy Award nominees are currently being announced as I write this, but yesterday the Razzies unveiled their full list of nominees as well. This is the annual celebration of "the worst that Hollywood has to offer", although over the past few years it has become increasingly clear that they only pick on movies and celebrities that are already easy targets. As you might expect, this year The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender led the way with 9 nominations each. Somehow it does seem a bit ironic that a Twilight movie is nominated in the same year as the Twilight parody Vampires Suck. If they love making fun of Twilight so much, you'd think the folks from the Razzies would have loved it! Also, poor Rob Schneider... why is he the only one that gets called out from Grown Ups? So predictable. Do you agree with this year's nominees, »

Razzie Awards 2011 Nominations

I have something important to tell you now – Razzie announced their nominations.

And guess what, huh, that was the secret until now, but The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Last Airbender and Sex & the City 2 each received multiple nominations today. You must be surprised.

Also, honoured were Ashton Kutcher, Jack Black, Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston, Cher, Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand etc. etc. but Ok, I understand, the Razzie also must be interesting.

So, we all know everything is about entertainement…but honestly, this is a little boring.

This is not a fight against bad movies and acting. So, do something about that if you can…if somebody can…

We all know what people are waiting for – to see will some of all these stars show up at this prestigious Movie Awards ceremony, like Sandra Bullock did last year.

So if you one of them, here’s information for you – the 31st Annual Razzie Awards, »
