The cast includes Jim Cummings, Jocelin Donahue, Sierra McCormick, Nicholas Logan, Michael Abbott Jr., Connor Paolo, Alexandra Essoe, Robin Bartlett, Jon Proudstar, Sam Huntington, Ryan Masson, and Barbara Crampton, with Gene Jones, Faizon Love and Richard Brake.

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”
Night of the Living Dead (1968) Continental Distributing
George Romero’s low-budget chiller, in which the dead come back to life and prey on the living, still packs a wallop more than 50 years later. Ben (Duane Jones) takes charge as shellshocked people shelter inside an isolated farmhouse…...

There’s something inherently terrifying about subterranean horror. Getting trapped underground creates a tense survival scenario thanks to various dangers. But what about what’s lurking in the dark? Survival horror with carnivorous creatures provides fertile ground for fear.
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is back with the brand new underground monster movie The Lair, which comes to theaters and on Digital and VOD on October 28, 2022.
In The Lair, “Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is shot down over Afghanistan and finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons – half human, half alien – are awakened.”
Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World) and Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) also star.
Charlotte Kirk co-wrote the screenplay with Neil Marshall.
In anticipation of Marshall’s return to the subterranean creature feature, we look back at eight horror movies that feature underground monsters.

Another intensely stylish, emotionally high key mystery from Darling director Mickey Keating, Offseason is clad in the garb of horror but is at its core a film about family, homeland, and the inexorable power which these things can sometimes exert over us even when we do everything in our power to get away. it’s a film about entering middle age and finding oneself trapped by precisely the kind of lifestyle one tried to get away from. The tentacles are just a sideshow.
If one iis going to deal in characters who feel trapped, there is nothing like an island setting. Marie (Jocelin Donahue) is drawn there by the news that her mother’s grave has been vandalised. Though she and her mother did not get along, she feels a vague sense of duty to sort things out, especially as her mother had begged her not to let her be returned there.

Offseason, the new film from writer/director Mickey Keating opens with Ava Aldrich addressing the viewer in a scene that recalls Marianna Hill’s warning at the start of Messiah of Evil.
That film involved a woman’s trip to a touristy coastal town in search of her missing and presumed dead father, Offseason opens with Marie Aldrich heading to the touristy island where Ava is buried. It seems her grave was desecrated and her presence is required to remedy it.
As she and George arrive their trip is almost derailed. It seems the drawbridge to the island is raised during the offseason and the Bridge Man only relents and lowers it after finding out why she’s there. He also warns them that after tomorrow it’ll be locked until spring.

When your dementia-riddled mother starts screaming about nightmares following her and demons crawling out from the water, it doesn’t matter how lucid she appeared beforehand. You tell her what she wants to hear, try to make her as calm and comfortable as possible, and await the inevitable. That’s what Marie Aldrich (Jocelin Donahue) did when Ava’s (Melora Walters) clear eyes and confident voice spun an outlandish tale surrounding the isolated island where she grew up and left without ever going back. She heard her mother’s pleas to ensure no part of her body returned there in death and assured her with a promise that none ever would. Except she had no control. Ava’s will demanded she receive an island burial and the law guaranteed it.

"There's something wrong with this place..." Rlje Films and Shudder have unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Offseason, which originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last year, later stopping by a few other fests. The film is made by an indie filmmaker named Mickey Keating, his seventh feature film so far. After receiving a mysterious letter about her mother's grave, a woman travels to a desolate island town to find out what's wrong and soon becomes trapped in an inescapable nightmare. Starring Jocelin Donahue as Marie, along with Joe Swanberg, Richard Brake, Melora Walters, and Jeremy Gardner. This trailer gives away a lot of the film, but I guess they're trying anything to get people interested somehow. I caught this during SXSW and I was not the biggest fan. At least it's a thrilling trailer. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Mickey Keating's Offseason,...

You can’t really talk about indie horror without talking about Dr. Rebekah McKendry. She has become synonymous with the genre, first as a journalist, then as a podcaster, and now as a filmmaker with multiple shorts and two features, All the Creatures Were Stirring and Psycho Granny, to her credit so far. She is what those douchier than myself might refer to as a “tastemaker” or an “influencer”—a lifelong fan of horror with a large platform from which to educate and enlighten. She’s a rare breed in the genre, both a creator and professional appreciator, deeply entrenched in all aspects of the genre. She has been and continues to be one of horror’s greatest champions.

Rlje Films and the horror streaming service Shudder have acquired the North American rights to “Offseason,” the latest film from director Mickey Keating that made its premiere at this year’s SXSW.
“Offseason” stars Jocelin Donahue and Joe Swanberg and is an American Gothic horror about a woman who travels to a desolate island town after receiving a mysterious letter and soon becomes trapped in a nightmare. Rlje plans to release “Offseason” in theaters early next year. Shudder, which has also acquired UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand rights, will premiere the film on its platform later in 2022. WTFFilms took international rights.
Keating is the director of “Darling,” “Carnage Park” and “Psychopaths,” and he both wrote and directed “Offseason,” which was his third film to premiere at SXSW. He was also the host of the Shudder Original series “The Core.” The film was produced by Maurice Fadida and Eric B. Fleischman...

After receiving a mysterious letter, a woman travels to her family's remote ancestral home somewhere in New England and finds herself trapped by an ancient force in Mickey Keating's latest mumblegore effort, Offseason. A kind of Eldritch-esque survival horror that feels equally inspired by Lovecraft and video game aesthetics (in a good way), Offseason proves to be an effective diversion, even if it doesn't really add up to much in the end, despite its apocalyptic intentions. Marie Aldrich receives a letter regarding the defacement of her mother's grave, the upstroke being that her presence is requested to deal with the damage. She and her partner, a rather dour and ineffectual George (Joe Swanberg), make the trek out to an isolated island,...

Seasonal beach towns feel haunted once balmy temperatures start to tumble. Remove the cheery masses, ice cream vendors and sizzling sands overtaken by crowds, and you’ll be left with eerily quiet streets, alongside waves echoing with distant memories of summer days. Set on one such mostly vacant (and likely fictional) island getting ready to shutter before an impending storm, writer-director Mickey Keating’s unnerving “Offseason” comprehends the particular creepiness of an insular vacation spot braving the year’s colder months. Though thinly conceived overall with not much philosophy to back its daunting visuals, “Offseason” still offers some genuinely spine-tingling images and sounds that will keep midnight audiences on their toes until the end.
Indeed, once you shrug off its thematic emptiness and occasionally clumsy dialogue, Keating’s genre exercise proves to be an absorbing enough watch, with Jocelin Donahue’s resolute Marie leading the way in a survival tale made of nightmares.

If you’re a genre fan, chances are you’re pretty familiar with the array of work from Mickey Keating, Jocelin Donahue, and Joe Swanberg that runs the gamut of horror from the last decade. The trio recently collaborated together on Keating’s latest film project, Offseason, which is set to debut later today at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival. Written by Keating and featuring a handful of other notable performers including Melora Walters, Richard Brake, and Jeremy Gardner, Offseason is centered around a young woman who must travel to a mysterious Florida town to try and settle some family business, but finds herself caught in a living nightmare and desperate to escape the clutches of the sea-faring community.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Keating, Donahue, and Swanberg about their experiences working together on Offseason, and they discussed the inspirations behind the project, the film’s unusual locale,...

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for the SXSW Film Festival once again, but here we are. For the 2021 iteration of the fest, SXSW is going virtual, which gives more people the opportunity to get to experience their brilliant lineup of films this year. As someone who is already well into my SXSW viewings for this year, I can confidently say that this might be SXSW’s best slate of Midnighters from top to bottom, and a few other genre and genre-adjacent films that are premiering in other sections are very much worth your time as well.
So, if you’re looking to check out some excellent horror and sci-fi cinema during this year’s SXSW from the comfort of your own home, here are 15 different projects you’ll definitely want to make time for. Oh, and because I included both How it Ends and Violation during my Sundance 2021 preview,...

Originally released in 2018, as far as I know All The Creatures Were Stirring is the second ever Christmas horror anthology movie, with the first being the highly entertaining A Christmas Horror Story.
This one has five segments and one encompassing segment which begins and ends the film as well as linking each other segment. In this we see a man and woman who are kind of on a date at a local theatre. They meet outside and once inside are introduced to a couple of strange characters until they are eventually seated to watch the show. The first part of the show then leads into the opening segment The Stockings Are Hung.

We’ve got a new featurette for you to watch for the upcoming film Doctor Sleep, which is the long-awaited sequel to The Shining. In it, Stephen King and director Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) meet for the first time and talk about the movie and what they were trying to accomplish with it. It also offers up some cool new footage, most of which is from the Overlook Hotel, which they rebuilt for the sequel.
The film continues the story of Danny Torrance 40 years after his nightmarish ordeal at the Overlook Hotel where his dad died trying to kill him. Obviously that jacked him up as he grew up. That experience still haunts him after all these years and it has affected his life hard in a psychological way.
The film adapts King’s novel but also has been reworked to fit Stanely Kubrick’s classic film...

As you know, director Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep will directly tie into Stanely Kubrick’s The Shining. There are going to be a good amount of flashback scenes that will feature characters from the original Shining film and those characters needed to be recast.
I can only imagine the pressure that Flanagan was feeling when he was recasting these roles almost forty years after the original movie was released. But, he opted to recast those characters instead of bringing them back to life with the use of CGI technology.
During an interview with Cb, the filmmaker talked about all this saying that it was the hardest part of the process:
"That was the hardest part of this, I think, because the only other option is to do some kind of digital thing where you try to recreate another actor and I don't feel like...
