BBC Breakfast editor Alison Ford dies after cancer battle

The BBC has confirmed the passing of BBC Breakfast editor Alison Ford.

Head of the BBC newsroom Mary Hockaday announced the news to staff in an email this morning (July 3) and an official statement was released later.

"It is with great sadness we can confirm that Alison Ford, Editor of BBC Breakfast, has died after a long illness," the statement read.

"Alison was a wonderful and passionate Editor of BBC Breakfast, who inspired her team and colleagues with her editorial spirit and flair.

"She successfully led the move of Breakfast to Salford and was an important and well-regarded senior figure within the BBC Newsroom and English Regions, where she worked previously. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. "

A minute's silence was held on the first floor of New Broadcasting House in Ford's memory at 1.30pm today.

In an email, director-general Tony Hall said: "I was so sorry to hear about Alison.

BBC1 Breakfast Time: 30 years of cereal TV

Britain's first breakfast television show began three decades ago, featuring Frank Bough, Selina Scott and the green goddess

It was exactly 30 years ago on 17 January that not a particularly expectant nation sat down to watch its first taste of breakfast television.

BBC1's Breakfast Time, launching two weeks ahead of its ill-fated ITV rival, TV-am, promised a new dawn in the history of the small screen.

What it delivered, along with Frank Bough, Selina Scott, Debbie Rix and Nick Ross on a sofa, was Francis Wilson forecasting the weather, Diana Moran – the Lycra-clad "green goddess" – getting the nation fit over their cornflakes, and Russell Grant, in a brightly coloured jumper, doing the horoscopes.

Richard Ingrams, writing in the Spectator, was not impressed. "There is no earthly reason why anyone of any intelligence would want to watch it," he wrote.
