Box Office: M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Split’ Doubles Competition to Win Friday

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Split,” from M. Night Shyamalan and Blumhouse Productions, is splintering box office expectations in its opening weekend after earning $14.6 million on Friday from 3,038 locations. The horror-thriller doubled its closest competition, “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” which took in $7.1 million from 3,651 theaters.

Split” is beating Friday estimates, which put it at about $28 million for the weekend. Now, it’s three-day total could be as much as $34 million.

After winning the past two weekend, “Hidden Figures” should sit comfortably in third. The film earned an additional $4.4 million on Friday on its way to a $16 million three-day total. Musical duo “La La Land” and “Sing” should round out the weekend’s top five.

The Founder,” meanwhile, is floundering in its first week. From 1,115 locations, the film grossed about $1 million heading toward a $3 million opening frame.

Faith-based film “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone” is heading toward a less-than desirable $1.1 million opening weekend after earning about $380,000 on Friday. »

M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Split’ to Twist Past Vin Diesel’s ‘xXx’ at Weekend Box Office

21 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

M. Night Shyamalan’s horror-thriller “Split” has separated from its rivals, and is on its way toward a surprisingly strong $28 million in its opening weekend at 3,038 North American locations, early estimates showed Friday.

Vin Diesel’s launch of “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” is heading for a second-place finish with about $20 million at 3,651 sites while the historical drama “Hidden Figures” continues its solid performance in third with $16 million. Michael Keaton’s biopic “The Founder” is showing little traction with a modest $3 million to $4 million weekend at 1,115 locations.

Split” is outperforming recent expectations, which had been at around $20 million at 3,037 sites earlier this week. Early grosses point to a $12 million $14 million opening day with Thursday night previews of $2 million, while “Xander Cage” heads for a $7 million to $9 million opening day. Some early estimates project that “Split” will hit as much as $35 million during the weekend.

‘xXx: The Return of Xander Cage’ Review

21 hours ago | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Vin Diesel, Ruby Rose, Donnie Yen, Rory McCann, Toni Collette, Tony Jaa, Nina Dobrev, Deepika Padukone, Danny Wu, Ariadna Gutierrez | Written by F. Scott Frazier | Directed by D.J. Caruso

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage starts off strong (and ridiculous) and keeps on going at a hundred miles per hour. You know you’re in for a crazy ride when the movie starts with title cards introducing each character: name, characteristics, favourite song, etc., you know, the usual! Even more ridiculous is that the first person we see – besides Samuel L. Jackson’s super-spy Gibbons – is footballing superstar Neymar, who is being recruited into the xXx program, in a Chinese restaurant, at 7am in the morning… Sounds absurd? Yes. Fun? Definitely!

And that’s the key to xXx 3, it is absurd And fun. The two go hand in hand, that’s how the franchise started and that’s how I hope it goes on… »

Second Opinion – xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017)

20 January 2017 10:15 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

XxX: Return of Xander Cage, 2017.

Directed by D.J. Caruso.

Starring Vin Diesel, Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Ruby Rose, Tony Jaa, Kris Wu, Nina Dobrev, Rory McCann, Michael Bisping, Hermione Corfield, Toni Collette, Tony González, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ice Cube.

Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.

Here is all that needs to be known about XxX: Return of Xander Cage: It has probably one of the dumbest and most generic plots to ever grace the action sub-genre of “kicking ass in style while getting the girl”, which doesn’t detract from the experience one bit. Vin Diesel has a clear grasp on why the resurrection of the Fast and Furious series is working, and more importantly, the flavor of balls-to-the-wall, all logic abandoned, f*** physics and gravity ludicrous chaos his »

Universal is expanding “Split,” starring James McAvoy as a man with 24 personalities, to 3,037 sites on Friday. The Thursday night figure for “Split” doubled the $1 million in previews from Shyamalan’s found-footage horror movie “The Visit,” which scored an opening weekend of $25.4 million two years ago.

Film Review: ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’

19 January 2017 4:54 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“xXx: Return of Xander Cage” begins in outer space, and the camera follows a rogue satellite as it leaves orbit and plummets toward the exact spot on earth where Samuel L. Jackson and Brazilian soccer star Neymar are discussing Stacy Peralta skate films in a Chinese restaurant. A few minutes later, the camera follows Vin Diesel as he dirt-skis down a snowless hillside in order to connect Dominican fishermen with a pirated feed of the World Cup. Half an hour after that, it picks up with Diesel as he surfs ten-foot waves on a motorcycle off the shore of a Philippine rave-island. None of this makes any more sense onscreen than it does on paper, and therein lies this film’s undeniable numbskull appeal.

It’s unlikely that anyone aside from prodigal star and producer Diesel was screaming for a return of the “xXx” franchise, which already felt Clinton-era-dated when »

xXx: Return Of Xander Cage Review

19 January 2017 2:32 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Watching xXx: Return Of Xander Cage mimics the effect of mainlining a Red Bull/Jolt Cola concoction while you skydive off the Empire State Building with only a handkerchief for a parachute. It’s like Shaun White and Travis Pastrana had conjoining daredevil wet dreams that formed some Exxxtreme tsunami of fantastical X-Games stuntmanship. I imagine someone asking “what about a story?” only to have Vin Diesel grab them by the lapel, hoist them up and say, “how about I skateboard, travel and bed sexy ladies for the first twenty minutes, There’S Your Story!” – they complied, of course. That’s the opening to Xander Cage’s adrenaline-packed franchise return, and radness only increases from there broskis and braskis!

xXx: Return of Xander Cage, 2017.

Xander Cage is left for dead after an incident, though he secretly returns to action for a new, tough assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons.

There’s a fine line between dumb and total idiocy. The Fast and Furious series steps that line, all be it with little care, but it does step that line. With xXx: Return of Xander Cage, a sequel entirely unwarranted and unjustifiable, Vin Diesel transcends all known boundaries and into a whole new plain of unmitigated, unbridled idiocy. It’s hysterical nonsense drowning in sexual politics Roger Moore-era Bond would find uncomfortable and set pieces born out of the frenzy only thought possible during »

M. Night Shyamalan’s horror-thriller “Split” and Vin Diesel’s “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” are poised to fight for the North American box office crown with about $20 million each this coming weekend.

Fox’s historical drama “Hidden Figures,” which has won the past two weekends, is likely to remain a solid contender in the $15 million to $18 million range.

Universal is launching “Split,” starring James McAvoy as a man with 24 personalities, at approximately 3,015 North American venues. Shyamalan produces and directs from his own script.

Split” has been building buzz among its core fans since its debut screening at September’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, followed by an official screening at November’s AFI Festival in Los Angeles and 24 word-of-mouth screenings on Friday the 13th last week, mirroring the 24 personalities of McAvoy’s character. Critics seem to be embracing “Split,” which so carries an 75% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
