Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Blog 1.9 Repairs

Writers: Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon,

Director: Bill Gierhart,

Starring: Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Laura Seay,

Synopsis: A woman who seemingly has uncontrollable telekinetic powers is taken in by S.H.I.E.L.D.

So with Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. currently riding high on a trio of well-plotted character studies, it was time for the most interesting character of all to get her moment in the sun. Agent May, played by the fantastic Ming-Na Wen, has remained the most interesting part of the show by keeping herself a complete mystery. We’ve always heard about little snippets from her past, but usually from the mouths of others as May isn’t much of a talker. This also allows her to stay away from the banter of other characters that all sound the same. Pop culture remarks and witty putdowns are not part of her repertoire, and for that I am very greatful.

'Agents of Shield' episode 9 review: 'Repairs' has an 'X-Men' vibe

Marvel's Agents of Shield continues its mission to build on character in Week Nine - coming in the wake of episodes that focused on Simmons, Fitz and Ward, 'Repairs' attempts to penetrate the frosty exterior of Ming-Na Wen's Melinda May.

The enticing recipe for this week's episode is one-part futuristic ghost tale, one-part tragic romance and - in the first act - one-part X-Men adventure, though of course Agents of Shield is forbidden from uttering the word "mutant".

Regardless, there's a strong X-Men feel to the first third of 'Repairs', as Hannah Hutchins (Laura Seay) appears to display telekinetic powers - unwittingly wreaking havoc wherever she goes - and is shunned and persecuted by the townsfolk of Batesville, Utah.

In previous weeks, Agents of Shield has relied heavily on the mythology of The Avengers and that entire cinematic universe, so it's refreshing to see the show explore other aspects

Agents of Shield recap: series one, episode nine – Repairs

With an episode that alludes to slasher movies and the X-Men, this week's big bad isn't the only thing leaping across dimensions

Spoiler Alert: This blog is for people watching Agents of Shield. Don't read on if you haven't seen episode nine

It's fair to say that no-nonsense ninja Melinda May (aka the Bus driver, aka "The Cavalry" aka actress Ming-Na Wen) has been, by a considerable margin, the least chatty character in Agents of Shield. Even compared to stoic Ward – now her regular agent-with-benefits, judging by their bedroom scene in tonight's episode – May has remained a mystery swaddled in an enigma wrapped in a tight flightsuit. In situations where other team members, including Coulson, throw out pop-culture references or wisecracks, May just rolls her eyes or, more commonly, jabs a flattened palm into a throat.

This episode dove deeper into May's backstory,

'Agents of Shield' episode 9 'Repairs' recap: A ray of hope for Melinda May

The dark reason behind Melinda May's nickname was revealed in "Marvel's Agents of Shield" episode 9, "Repairs." Though the story behind "The Cavalry" twisted and morphed over the years, Coulson tells Skye that the incident that caused May to go cold was not a happy one.

According to him, May was a bit like Skye before she found herself in a situation she came out the worst for fixing. No one knows the details of the mission except May (which means it will take until at least the next sweeps period for the audience to find out as well), but Coulson says it caused May to lose herself.

Skye deduces that Coulson is keeping May around to try to warm her up again, and it seems like it's working. The post-credits scene shows that May got in on the aircraft prank war (which has a real-life parallel offscreen) by putting shaving
