Disney Is Bringing Westworld-Style Robots to Its Theme Parks?

10 April 2017 1:55 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

HBO's hit series Westworld showed the dangers of using robots in theme parks, but a futuristic park like this, where adults live out their own fantasies by using these robots, would be quite controversial if it were to be built in real life. A new report reveals that Disney may be starting the process to implement real soft-body robots that would interact with guests at its theme parks, but they won't have any Westworld-type applications. These bots are believed to be playing Disney characters, but it isn't known what characters will be implemented at this time.

Orlando Sentinel broke the news that Disney has filed for a patent, where the company reveals they are, "designing a robot that will move and physically interact like an animated character." The prototype sketch that was included with the patent application reportedly showed a round body that was reminiscent of the Big Hero 6 character Baymax. »

Variety Staffers Pick Some of Their Favorite Film Moments From 2016

6 January 2017 8:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Whether a moody sci-fi drama (“Arrival”) or a quirky comedy about teenage angst (“The Edge of Seventeen”), 2016 presented a wide variety of movies with memorable moments. Variety staffers picked their top choices for stand-out scenes.

Director: Denis Villeneuve

We learn at the very beginning of Villeneuve’s ethereal sci-fi thriller that Louise Banks’ (Amy Adams) daughter, Hannah, dies. But when we find out how and when and in what way, it’s more crushing than we ever could have imagined. In one of the film’s saddest and most heartbreaking scenes, Hannah asks Louise why her father (Jeremy Renner) left, and why he’s been looking at her differently lately. Louise, torn between revealing the truth and protecting Hannah’s innocence, tells Hannah that he left because Louise told him something that he wasn’t ready to hear. And we are left in suspense. — Malina Saval
