Melissa McCarthy, Lance Bass and More Celebs Who Are Just as Obsessed with HomeGoods as the Rest of Us

11 September 2017 8:18 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

The lure of a well-stocked HomeGoods is a force no decorating fiend can resist — including celebrities.

The popular décor destination, known for its huge selection of affordable (and occasionally offbeat) finds, is a favorite resource of any budget decorator. But the discount store, whose parent company Tjx Cos. recently launched a new chain of stores in the U.S., has also garnered a list of celebrity fans who, like us, will never pass up the chance to spend an afternoon filling their carts with candles, coasters and “Champagne” signs.

Why the Woody Allen ‘Difficult People’ Parody Exposes the Power of His Legacy

9 August 2017 1:15 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The news cycle surrounding Woody Allen these days tends to go as follows: Reminder of previous allegations, followed by announcement of new film, followed by talent in new project being asked about allegations, followed by new film receiving either critical acclaim or relative indifference, followed by new reminder of previous allegations.

Right now, we’re in the “announcement of new film” phase, with Tuesday’s casting of Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, and Selena Gomez in Allen’s upcoming untitled feature film. But that same morning, Hulu premiered the most savage takedown yet of not just Woody Allen’s modern day work as an auteur, but the cult of personality around him.

Difficult People” in general and creator Julie Klausner in particular have never been shy about poking fun at certain topics the rest of Hollywood might consider taboo. Just consider the metric ton of jokes about Kevin Spacey’s sexuality »

Film Review: ‘Brave New Jersey’

5 August 2017 12:30 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Long before Trump coined the term “fake news,” there was Orson Welles’ legendary 1938 radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ “The War of the Worlds,” which convinced thousands (if not millions) of listeners they were hearing actual news bulletins about a Martian invasion. Several books and films (most notably, “The Night That Panicked America,” Joseph Sargent’s terrific 1975 TV movie, and “War of the Worlds,” Cathleen O’Connell’s shrewdly constructed 2013 PBS documentary) have emphasized the infectious terror that the broadcast inadvertently sparked among gullible folks who tuned in late and missed the introduction that clearly identified it as a presentation of Welles’ “Mercury Theatre on the Air.” But in the world according to “Brave New Jersey,” Jody Lambert’s uneven but ultimately winning comedy about small-town channel surfers who missed the intro and assumed the worst on the evening of Oct. 30, 1938, a little bit of terror might not be such a bad thing.

Christina Hendricks, Alysia Reiner, & Anna Camp to Star in Marianna Palka’s “Egg”

17 July 2017 1:01 PM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Alysia Reiner in “Orange is the New Black”: Netflix

A radical depiction of unconventional motherhood is on the way. A press release has announced that Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Alysia Reiner (“Orange Is the New Black”), and Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”) have signed on to star in “Egg,” a dark comedy “about why we choose motherhood, why we revere it, fear it, or delegate it, and why some of us choose to forgo it.” The female-led story, which hails from indie production company Over. Easy., will be written by best-selling author Risa Mickenberg and directed by “Glow” star Marianna Palka.

The story centers on Tina (Reiner), an audacious conceptual artist — is there any other kind? — who, along with her “passive-aggressive feminist husband” Wayne (Gbenga Akinnagbe, “The Deuce”) invites her “eight-month pregnant art school rival (Hendricks) and power-hungry, new money husband Don (David Alan Basche, ‘Equity’) to their loft in the Bronx for dinner,” the official synopsis details. The pair plan to surprise their visitors with Tina’s new work-in-progress — “a radical alternative to motherhood. But when Tina and Wayne’s non-traditional surrogate Kiki (Camp) arrives in short shorts, the truth [comes out] and the patriarchy fights to hang on to its teeth.”

Produced by Reiner, Basche, and Michele Ganeless, former President of Comedy Central, the pic is scheduled to shoot later this summer in New York.

“We are thrilled to throw another stone at the glass ceiling of Hollywood, by hiring more women than men, while telling this darkly comic stereotype-breaking story about parenthood,” said Reiner.

Palka made her directorial debut with 2008’s “Good Dick,” a comedy about a lonely woman (Palka) and the video store clerk (Jason Ritter, “Parenthood”) trying to impress her. Her most recent film, “Bitch,” debuted at Sundance earlier this year. The feminist comedy stars Palka as a mother of four children who discovers her husband is cheating on her. “She can’t kill herself, so she finds another solution by living as a dog in the family basement,” Palka explained to us.

When we asked her what she’d like people to think about after watching “Bitch,” she said, “That healed people heal people. That woman deserve all of their civil and human rights. That no one needs to use the term ‘bitch’ against anyone else, unless they’re literally talking about a female dog. Because no one is actually that term. So let’s find a better word,” she urged.

Palka produced Lucy Walker’s Oscar short-listed, Emmy Award-nominated “The Lion’s Mouth Opens.” She’s also the subject of the doc short, which sees the Scottish multi-hyphenate confronting the possibility of having Huntington’s Disease.

Christina Hendricks, Alysia Reiner, & Anna Camp to Star in Marianna Palka’s “Egg” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story. »
