Could “Good Girls Revolt” Be Coming Back?

Good Girls Revolt

Good Girls Revolt” might be getting a second life. The much-loved, short-lived series was cancelled nearly a year ago by Amazon after just one season, but Deadline reports, “Sony Pictures TV Studios, whose TriStar Television division produced the series, is preparing a pitch for a new season that would go out shortly.”

Set in 1969 and based on Lynn Povich’s book of the same name, “Good Girls Revolt” was created by Dana Calvo and centers on young female researchers who work at News of the Week. The plot was inspired by true events and depicted a landmark sexual discrimination case. Genevieve Angelson, Anna Camp, and Erin Darke starred.

While Amazon doesn’t release ratings data, “sources say streaming monitor Symphony Advanced Media metrics had ‘Good Girls Revolt’ collecting more viewers than many of Amazon’s other originals,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote when the show was originally cancelled. It was also one of the streamer’s biggest hits ever among female viewers.

So what was the deal? “Sources say Amazon Studios head Roy Price was not a fan of the series and didn’t deem it to be an awards season player in opting to pass on ordering a second season after hearing Sony’s Season 2 pitch this week.” Calvo also spoke about Price’s unenthusiastic response to the series. Yep, that Price. The guy who resigned from his job about a month ago after being accused of sexual harassment in the workplace. His decision to ax “Good Girls Revolt” despite its strong ratings suddenly makes a little more sense.

It’s not especially surprising that someone who is alleged to have harassed a female producer of on one of Amazon’s shows (“Man in the Castle”) didn’t take to a feminist series about women fighting against sexism. This is, after all, the same guy who reportedly turned down ratings and critical hit “Big Little Lies” because stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman were’t guaranteed to “show their tits.”

“While Sony TV is known for going the extra mile on saving its shows, this time ‘Good Girls Revolt’ is being resurrected by popular demand,” Deadline writes. “The series, which tackles gender equality [and] sexual discrimination in the workplace, emerged as an unlikely poster child in the current crackdown on sexual harassment in Hollywood, which started with the demise of Fox NewsRoger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly and switched into high gear with the Harvey Weinstein scandal.” And has continued with powerhouses like Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K.

Good Girls Revolt” revisits a critical time in history that remains all too relevant today. With stories about serial predators dominating the headlines, it’s the perfect time to greenlight more of this show, and doing so would send a powerful message to — and about — Hollywood. Entitled, abusive men can no longer reign with impunity.

The source writes that multiple outlets are interested in picking up the series. According to the buzz, “Calvo and the rest of the series’ original producing team are on board, and a pitch was put together for a second season — which … won’t necessarily be a formal second season, picking up where Season 1 left off, but a series in the same setting with the same characters and the same subject matter that would be tailored to the individual network that picks up the show.”

While the cast isn’t guaranteed to return — “because ‘Good Girls Revolt’ was canceled so long ago, the studio doesn’t have deals with the cast” — they’ve all have been active on social media, “tweeting in support of the show and expressing desire to come back, so the actors are expected to rejoin if the show is resurrected.”

‘Good Girls Revolt’ Could Come Back for Season 2 as Sony Shops a Revival in Wake of Weinstein Allegations
Less than a year after Amazon canceled the series, “Good Girls Revolt” might get a Season 2 after all. And it might not even have to find a new home.

Sony execs revealed on Thursday that they have received renewed interest in the show, given a changing culture after the recent Harvey Weinstein scandals. According to insiders, Sony is once again shopping a revival of “Good Girls Revolt” — and the potential suitors even include Amazon, now under new management.

The ten episodes of “Good Girls Revolt” released last October centered on a group of young women at magazine in the late 1960s, including the ways that they deal with rampant workplace sexism.

Good Girls Revolt Ep: Ousted Amazon Boss Never Watched Our Show
Did Good Girls Revolt ever stand a chance at Amazon?

In a new interview, creator Dana Calvo alleges that recently ousted Amazon Studios chief Roy Price had never seen the show before it was cancelled after one season last December.

“He confirmed that by having us refer to the characters by the actresses’ names [when we pitched Season 2],” Calvo told The New York Times. “He was unfamiliar.”

Elizabeth McGovern Says ‘Time and the Conways’ Is a Coping Mechanism for Today’s Dark Times (Exclusive)

Elizabeth McGovern Says ‘Time and the Conways’ Is a Coping Mechanism for Today’s Dark Times (Exclusive)
After six seasons playing Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, on Downton Abbey, Elizabeth McGovern is once again the matriarch of a wealthy British family of the early 1900s in the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of J. B. Priestley’s Time and the Conways. Revived for the first time since its 1938 debut, the play is a time-jumping story that is filled with optimism and hope as the family celebrates one daughter’s birthday in the present and unimaginable transformations as they face their bitter realities 19 years later. But after watching McGovern perform onstage, which just so happens to mark her first time back on Broadway since playing Ophelia in Hamlet 25 years prior, it’s clear that Mrs. Conway is anything but the seemingly perfect, presentable and understanding mother that the actress embodied on the ITV series.

“I’m finding it a little bit frightening how easy it is for me to understand this mother. I’m not sure

Trailer Watch: A Family’s Life Goes to the Dogs in Marianna Palka’s “Bitch”

Bitch

“We thought you’d be home. I postponed dinner as long as I could,” Jill (Marianna Palka) says as she leaves a message for her husband, Bill (Jason Ritter, “Parenthood”), in the new trailer for “Bitch.” “There’s a dog watching me,” she adds in a trembling voice.

You see, Jill’s having a hard time of it. Bill is never at home, is cheating on her, and doesn’t listen when she talks to him. She takes care of their four kids on her own, and they are sort of terrible (“Mom! Can we go in this century, please?”). Growing more and more desperate, Jill finally cracks — and begins behaving like an aggressive dog. Literally.

“I read and heard a story that Scottish doctor R.D. Laing had a patient who had empty nest syndrome when her kids grew up and left the house and it was so fascinating to me,” writer-director-star Palka told us when “Bitch” screened at Sundance. With Laing’s patient in mind, she decided to explore what it would mean if an unhappy woman acted like an actual bitch.

“Women deserve all of their civil and human rights,” Palka stressed. “No one needs to use the term ‘bitch’ against anyone else, unless they’re literally talking about a female dog. Because no one is actually that term. So let’s find a better word.”

Along with appearing in projects like “Glow,” “Girls,” and “Scottish Mussel,” Palka has helmed and acted in the features “I’m the Same,” “Good Dick,” and “Always Worthy.” Frequent collaborator Ritter also appears in the latter two. Palka’s next project, the dark motherhood comedy “Egg,” is in post-production. It stars Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Alysia Reiner (“Orange Is the New Black”), and Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect” franchise).

Bitch” hits theaters and VOD November 10.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Todd Haynes reunites with his Far From Heaven star, Julianne Moore, for a film that appears as wondrous as the title suggests. Wonderstruck is in theaters Friday, Oct. 20.

Why We’re Obsessed With ‘Mindhunter

‘Blade Runner 2049’ Rave Reviews Bolster Social Media Buzz

‘Blade Runner 2049’ Rave Reviews Bolster Social Media Buzz
“Blade Runner 2049” topped social media buzz last week with 83,000 new conversations in the wake of the movie’s strong reviews, according to media-measurement firm comScore and its PreAct service.

The follow-up to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic “Blade Runner” has earned an impressive 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety’s Peter Debruge wrote in his review that the film “delves deep into the existential concerns suggested by the earlier film, as screenwriters Hampton Fancher (who also co-wrote the original) and Michael Green raise evocative questions about human-android relations and the nuances that will one day be used to tell them apart.”

“Blade Runner 2049” is being distributed domestically by Warner Bros. through its output deal with Alcon Entertainment. Sony is the international distributor and production partner with Alcon Entertainment. The reboot, directed by Denis Villeneuve, stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, who reprises his role of Rick Deckard.

Early box office forecasts had projected a domestic launch
