'House' series finale: Hugh Laurie says don't expect a last-minute change

21 May 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

How does one of the edgiest, most antagonistic characters in series television history say goodbye?

Pretty much in the same fashion he said hello.

Anything else would ring false for Dr. Gregory House, and title star Hugh Laurie and series creator and executive producer David Shore are determined to see him end true to form as the Fox medical drama "House" wraps up its eight-year run Monday, May 21. Don't expect major reassessments or revelations by the central figure, then, just a final and familiar round of sass and snark. And, very probably, one last swath of professional brilliance.

"It would almost be one of House's many mantras that people don't change, generally speaking," Laurie tells Zap2it, a two-time winner of Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Television Critics Association Awards who also became a producer as the series proceeded. "It's certainly true in television drama. They can't change, actually. »

'Saturday Night Live' poll: Who will be the next Kristen Wiig?

21 May 2012 8:42 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

When Amy Poehler left SNL in December of ’08, Kristen Wiig suddenly became the show’s only full-fledged female cast member. And even after Abby Elliott was officially promoted to repertory player in 2010, Wiig still stood out as one of the series’ most visible performers — and its most visible female player by far. With a dynamo like Wiig dominating the stage and taking nearly every female speaking role, it was nigh on impossible for any other woman to make an impression.

Now, though, Wiig is freeing up her Saturday nights — and the sketch show’s four remaining ladies (Elliott, Vanessa Bayer, »

How Has ‘House’ Changed Its Stars Along The Way?

17 May 2012 3:13 PM, PDT | Fox All Access | See recent Fox All Access news »

Over the past eight years, “House” has managed to affect its viewers in so many different ways.

At times, it’s made us laugh; at other times, it’s made us cry.  Some of us might have a heightened interest in medicine; some of us might have heightened anxiety over a symptom they share with a patient.  And over the years, we’ve been teased, frustrated, fascinated, and delighted by the show.

And ultimately, we’ve been entertained.

But what about the cast members who made the show so affecting?  How has being on the show changed them as actors?  For the two characters at the very core of the show — House and Wilson — how have they changed over the course of these eight years?  (Or have they?)

With the series finale just a few days away, Fox All Access went to the “House” set and spoke with cast members Hugh Laurie, »

Paul Rudd, An iPad & A Toilet: It's The Poster For 'This Is 40' Plus A New Image From The Film

8 May 2012 11:16 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

When Judd Apatow's "This Is 40" was first announced, it was described as not a sequel to "Knocked Up" by Universal, even though the film is clearly a look at the lives of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) a few years after the events of that film. Now the new poster (like the recent trailer) plays with that tag, describing the film as the "sort-of sequel to 'Knocked Up'. " Nice wink at that original claim, Uni.

The poster gives us a vibe not that much different from the one evinced in the trailer. Pete's on the crapper with his iPad and Debbie is brushing her teeth thinking, "Wtf, can't we preserve some mystery to our relationship?" Seems like that's going to be the general theme to the picture, which is frankly fine by us. We will admit, we will be curious to see how they »

TV Review: House 8.18, “Body and Soul”

29 April 2012 11:51 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

[rating 4]

(Warning: significant spoilers ahead!)

Well, here begins the final five episodes of House. Not to be confused, of course, with the Final Five from BSG. Anyhow.

The case this week centers on a young Asian-American boy of Hmong descent who has vivid dreams of an old woman doing horrible things to him in his sleep. He wakes up from one of these nightmares and cannot breathe. Eventually he passes out. House (Hugh Laurie) and team investigate and begin throwing out the usual diagnostics and trying different treatments. Of course none of these work.

The mother, turning desperate, begins paying attention to her father-in-law, who believes that the boy is possessed by evil spirits. When the kid apparently speaks in Hmong without any training in the language and then starts levitating, this is seen as evidence. The mother eventually consents to him performing an exorcism which finishes up at just about »

The first trailer has now surfaced online, via Apple, and is naturally must-watch viewing material for all of Apatow’s fans. As you can see from the plot synopsis below, things are largely still being kept under wraps, and who doesn’t like a little bit of secrecy eight months away?

Super producer Judd Apatow returns to directing in a “sort of sequel to Knocked Up,” the December 2012 comedy This is 40. Paul Rudd and Apatow’s real-life wife Leslie Mann reprise their roles from the 2007 comedy as Pete and Debbie, a married couple with two daughters (also Apatow’s). It is essentially the writer/director’s mid-life crisis, played out with his usual R-rated humor and featuring some familiar faces from Apatow’s stable of improvisers. Trailer for Judd Apatow's Comedy This Is 40

27 April 2012 2:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Universal Pictures has released a great new trailer for a funny looking new comedy called This is 40, from director Judd Apatow. The movie stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, and it's a spin-off of Apatow's previous comedy Knocked Up, focusing on the characters Pete and Debbie. It looks like another solid comedy from Apatow, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out! I think you'll be able to relate more to the movie and the characters if you're married and have kids.

The film also features apperences from Jason Segel, Lena Dunham, Megan Fox, Chris O’Dowd, Melissa McCarthy, Charlyne Yi, Albert Brooks, John Lithgow and Annie Mumolo.

Here's the Synopsis:

Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People) brings audiences This Is 40, an original comedy that expands upon the story of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from the blockbuster hit Knocked Up »

‘This Is 40′ Trailer: Judd Apatow’s Sort-Of Sequel to ‘Knocked Up’

27 April 2012 12:08 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The latest product from House Judd Apatow, The Five-Year Engagement, hits theaters this weekend, and with it comes the first theatrical trailer for This Is 40: a (sorta) followup to Knocked Up that looks at what married with kids couple Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) are up to, now that they’re about to become officially middle-aged.

Apatow wrote, directed, and produced This Is 40, which also features familiar Apatow-verse faces as Jason Segel, Charlyne Yi, his real-life wife (Mann) and daughters, Maude and Iris. The supporting cast is rounded out by seasoned comedic talent in the forms of Albert Brooks, John Lithgow, Melissa McCarthy and Lena Dunham (Girls). Did we mention Megan Fox is in this too? (Odd though it may seem…)

As expected, the trailer for This Is 40 makes the film look like Apatow’s customary serving of ...

Watch: Trailer For Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40' Starring 'Knocked Up' Duo Paul Rudd & Leslie Mann

27 April 2012 11:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

This is 38? Middle age comes crashing down hard in "This Is 40," the sort-of-sequel to "Knocked Up," and the first trailer is here to give us a taste of Judd Apatow's latest turn behind the camera, one that finds him once again stretching into dramatic territory while still bringing his trademark laughs, driven by life's uncomfortable, real moments.

As you know Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles as Pete and Debbie, in a new story that focuses on their relationship as the latter hits the big 4-0. Facing the age that for many women marks a frightening, unknowable turning point, Debbie finds renewed energy to raise her kids right, fix the problems in her relationship and remain fit and attractive. Apatow has been down this road before, balancing real life issues with earnest comedy in the uneven "Funny People," but it already looks like he's found a »

Judd Apatow’s ‘This Is 40’ Trailer

27 April 2012 10:19 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With his latest production effort, The Five-Year Engagement, hitting theaters today Universal has perfectly orchestrated the debut trailer of Judd Apatow‘s This is 40. This provides our first glimpse at footage of the film, which is a “sort-of” sequel to his 2007 hit Knocked Up, following the married couple of Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. By the time this one hits theaters, it will be about three-and-half-years since his last film Funny People arrived to a mixed response.

As I’m certainly not going through the same life crisis as Apatow and his gang here, it is a bit hard to relate to the comedy, which I don’t find particularly funny. Also, why is everyone completely tan? Let’s hope the film answers that question and also packs some more laughs. Check out the trailer below for the film also starring Jason Segel, Lena Dunham, Megan Fox, Chris O’Dowd, »

Video: House Cast Reveals What They’ll Steal!

23 April 2012 11:07 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

If House‘s imminent series finale weren’t heartbreaking enough, it looks like the medical drama’s cast is resorting to petty crime.

TVLine readers are getting an exclusive first look at this Fox-produced video, in which ensemble members Hugh Laurie (House), Robert Sean Leonard (Wilson), Odette Annable (Adams), Omar Epps (Foreman), Peter Jacobson (Taub), and Charlyne Yi (Park) talk about what they plan to swipe after the set goes dark for the last time. (The finale airs May 21; we’re thinking Princeton-Plainboro will be picked clean by then.)

Their answers may surprise you — one even prompts Laurie to admonish Leonard, »

TV Review: House 8.17, ‘We Need the Eggs’

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

(Warning: Significant spoilers follow!)

This was the first episode of House where I truly felt like the end was near. There’s only a few more episodes left, and with this story it feels like we’re beginning to enter the endgame.

The medical case this week centers on a patient who is admitted after crying blood. So, yeah, if he could figure out how to make pills that cause that, he could make a lot of money from the emo crowd. Anyhow, as the team are going through the usual diagnostic process, they discover that the patient has a sex doll that he’s in a “relationship” with. The doll is one of those really expensive ones that many guys wish they can afford, but cannot. Trust me, they’re quite pricey. Beyond a reviewer’s salary, at any rate.

Moving on!

'Gcb' gets reality knock-off, now let's turn the tables: Which reality show should go scripted?

16 April 2012 2:40 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Word came down the pipe today (via TMZ) that the producers behind the Gremlin-like Real Housewives franchise are seeking out good Christian… uh… ladies for a reality series based on ABC’s Gcb. In the era of reality proliferation, it’s become a go-to to rip off the hard work of TV writers and reproduce their ideas cheaply by training the lens on a coterie of overindulged, under-restrained aspiring singers and actresses. Indeed, it’s exactly how Real Housewives was born: the smal-screen version of Athena springing from the head of Zeus, only replace the goddess of wisdom with Vicki Gunvalson »

‘House’ Stars: And The Moral Of The Story Is…

13 April 2012 6:05 PM, PDT | Fox All Access | See recent Fox All Access news »

For eight seasons, the doctors of “House” have delved into the issues of what it means to be human, raising questions about both morality and mortality.

And often, the answers have been left deliberately murky, leaving enough grey areas to encourage viewers to use their own grey matter and draw their own conclusions.

With the series soon drawing to a close, Fox All Access visited the set of “House” and asked its stars — Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard, Omar Epps, Peter Jacobson, Odette Annable, and Charlyne Yi — to tell us the one lesson about life they hope the show’s fans will take away from the series.

You know, aside from “Everybody lies.”

The final six episodes of “House” air Monday nights at 9/8c on Fox.

TV Review: House 8.15, ‘Blowing the Whistle’

5 April 2012 3:43 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

[rating 3]

So apparently someone at the House writing team has heard of Bradley Manning and his situation. If you haven’t, do go look it up, and reflect on the way he’s currently being treated. Normally this statement would be a bit of a digression on my part, but here it isn’t, since this story is clearly based, at least in part, on Manning’s story.

We begin with a family meeting a returning Army soldier at the airport. He’s the brother/uncle/brother-in-law of everyone there. The brother is especially excited, though his son less so, since the brother is about to go off to Afghanistan.

When the soldier in question finally appears, he’s in handcuffs and being led by a group of MPs. Shockingly, the family apparently wasn’t told anything about this ahead of time. As the soldier is lead off, he suddenly collapses »

TV Review: House 8.14, ‘Love is Blind’

20 March 2012 3:03 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

I don’t get the appeal of Nascar. Watching a bunch of rich people drive fast cars in a circle for hours on end doesn’t seem even remotely interesting to me. I know that the people who are into it are at least partly interested in seeing horrific crashes, but I can see those recapped endlessly on the news. So why bother with watching the races?

I bring this up because tonight’s episode of House was supposed to air last month. It did not. It was delayed due to broadcast of a Nascar race. So there’s another reason for me to dislike it.

We begin with a blind man buying an engagement ring, which enables me to point out that American paper currency is a horrible thing for the blind. But anyhow, he gets the ring, goes outside and gets suddenly overwhelmed by loud noises. »
