Nan Avant is a Seattle based composer for film, documentary, concert
stage, animation and games. She has a BFA degree in
Piano Perfromance from California Istititute of the Arts and has
studied film scoring, orchestration and composition with two time Emmy
award winner Hummie Mann at the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program.
Nan has collaborated with directors from New York, San Francisco, New Zealand, Atlanta, Seattle and Portland, Ore.
Several of her film scores have won awards including Gold Medal Awards from the Park City Film Music Festival 2011 for Three Actresses Walk Into A Bathroom directed by Jade Justad and a Director's Choice Silver Medal for Excellence for the feature film, Unremembered directed by Greg Kerr 2010. Her films have screened at festivals throughout the world including Greece, Ireland, NYC Tribeca and various festivals in the United States. Her music has also played on local and network cable television and local PBS stations in the Pacific Northwest.
Nan's newest concert work, Tributum composed for Celtic Bagpipes and Chamber Orchestra premiered at the Celebrate World Music! concert on March 24, 2013 to a sold out audience at Benaroya, Nordstrom Hall in Seattle. The concert was performed by the Northwest Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra conducted by 2011 Grammy Award Winner for Best Classical Engineered Album, David Sabee. Celebrate World Music! featured eight Seattle composer's original world music compositions and 11 soloists. Tributum featured two bagpipes, the Uilleann Pipes performed by Dr. Eliot Grasso and the Great Highland Bagpipes performed by Kevin Auld. The Celebrate World Music CD is available at Amazon.com
Nan is a pianist and a graduate of California Institute of the Arts with a BFA in Piano Performance and has studied film scoring at the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program. Nan is a member of Full Brain Films Productions based in Portland, Oregon and a team member of Asgard Studios, a game company based in Atlanta GA. Nan also writes for online publications and has contributed articles to ScoreCast Online and No Strings Attached E News.
Nan's compositions have thematic and rhythmic intentions, often reflecting her Latin heritage and encompass her passion for classical composers, world music, and electronic contemporary sound design.
