It’s finally here. Today we have our first look at footage from Paul Thomas Anderson‘s highly-anticipated upcoming feature The Master. In the form of a teaser trailer, we hear Joaquin Phoenix being interrogated about a previous event, filled with enticing imagery. The period drama stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, David Warshofsky, Rami Malek, Jesse Plemons, Madisen Beaty, Joshua Close and Fiona Dourif. Check out the teaser below via the official site.
Hoffman leads the film as a man “who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls.” Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie, “a young drifter who is swept up in the movement and becomes Hoffman’s character’s lieutenant. As everything builds, however, Freddie begins to question the system he’s helped to create. »

You've got to assume the secretive folks at Annapurna Pictures are fairly amused this afternoon after opening the latest edition of the New York Times. Inside is a curiously timed and rather headscratching article about Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming drama, expected to be called, "The Master."
Written by the generally solid Micheal Cieply (who make no mistake, we tip our cap to), the article about this Annapurna Pictures-produced, The Weinstein Company-distributed, sixth feature-length PTA effort is unusual because, well, it provides a rather well-known recap of the film without on-the-record quotes from anyone in the production (PTA has declined to speak publicly about the movie thus far). This is to say, it genuinely feels like Cieply set out to write a profile on "The Master" but was pretty much stonewalled every step of the way.
The issue isn't with the writer, but instead demonstrates just how buttoned-up production on PTA's secretive film is. »

After five long years of waiting, another Paul Thomas Anderson feature is finally arriving in theaters and we’ve got official confirmation of its release date. It was rumored earlier this month, but now Box Office Mojo has reported a October 12th, 2012 release date for one of our most highly-anticipated films of the year, The Master, the period drama starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams.
Starting out limited, the film will go against Ruben Fleischer‘s Gangster Squad and the Kevin James comedy Here Comes the Boom. This could possibly mean a fall festival bow like Venice or Tiff, but I could easily see The Weinstein Company just riding off cinephiles’ anticipation and going to straight the theaters.

There's good news and bad news tonight. The potentially bad news is that the glut of commenters who insist that Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming drama, "The Master" isn't actually called that are wrong according to Box Office Mojo. The good news, as promised by Annapurna Pictures, the financiers and producers of the film, is that it has nabbed an October release date.
The Weinstein Company has now officially set the drama for an October 12th bow in limited release (which will likely expand as we get deeper into the Oscar season). Could this mean an early appearance on the fall film festival circuit? It's completely possible. PTA's "There Will Be Blood," mostly skipped those rounds in 2007, though it appeared briefly at Telluride and Fantastic Fest (at the former festival they only showed clips).
Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, "The Master" is a 1950s-set drama centered on the »

There aren’t many films we report rumored release dates for, but this morning is a wonderful exception. While a few people are reporting a rumored Cannes bow for the next drama from Paul Thomas Anderson, I can’t imagine we’d see the film unspool that earlier. With The Weinstein Company not confirming a theatrical release date, we’ve been heavily anticipating when his sixth feature would arrive. Producers rumored late 2012 way back last summer, but now we’ve got a new hint.
Producer Megan Ellison, of Annapurna Pictures, tweeted to Cigs & Red Vines this morning that while “it’s still a bit early” she says to keep our eyes on October. The Weinstein Co. has The Wettest County in August, Killing Them Softly (aka Cogan’s Trade) in September and then the political satire Butter in early October. With their heavy hitters Django Unchained and The Silver Linings »
