'Hairspray Live!': What Was Different From the 2007 Movie Musical?

7 December 2016 9:33 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

Hairspray Live! was quite the exciting TV event for those who really love Hairspray, no matter if we're talking about the 1988 movie, the Broadway play or the 2007 big-screen remake (or all three).

But with the Adam Shankman-directed film — starring Zac Efron, John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky and others — being the reprise of most recent memory, it's hard not to compare the movie musical version to NBC's live-action special. So we did.

Check out the differences we noticed between the 2007 movie musical and Hairspray Live! below.

Whatever Happened to Hairspray's Nikki Blonsky?

7 December 2016 1:22 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

As you watch NBC's Hairspray Live! tonight, you may wonder, what happened to Nikki Blonsky? One minute the 28-year-old actress was playing Tracy Turnblad and dancing with Zac Efron and John Travolta in the 2007 musical film Hairspray, which marked her first onscreen acting role. Then you may have watched her as one of the leading stars of the short-lived ABC Family series Huge. In 2011, E! News learned Blonsky worked for a brief period at a shoe store in New York City and was later hired as a cosmetologist at a hair salon in her hometown of Great Neck on Long Island, New York. And now Blonsky is back on a movie set. Over the past few years, she »

With a week to go until NBC’s highly-anticipated Hairspray Live!, new details are emerging about the star-studded musical — including what roles Hairspray alums Ricki Lake and Marissa Jaret Winokur will have in the production.

The ladies — who originated the role of Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 John Waters film and in the 2002 Broadway show, respectively — first revealed to People earlier this month that they’ll cameo in NBC’s live musical.

Though what exactly they’d being doing in the show was kept hush hush at the time, Harvey Fierstein — who plays Tracy’s mom Edna Turnblad — finally spilled the »

Ricki Lake, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Maddie Baillio: The Women of Hairspray Talk Being Plus-Size in Hollywood

15 November 2016 5:00 PM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Ricki Lake didn’t grow up thinking she would ever play an ingenue.

“I remember telling my mom I wanted to be in Annie, and she told me, ‘You’re not the starving orphan type,’ ” the actress says in the current issue of People.

But at 18 years old, Lake won the starring role of plus-size optimist Tracy Turnblad in John Waters’s 1988 hit film Hairspray.

The part made Lake, 48, a star, but she had no idea her Tracy would inspire the young Marissa Jaret Winokur, who would go on to win a Tony for playing the character in the 2002 Broadway musical based on the film. »

Posterized: Melissa McCarthy, Unlikely Superstar

8 April 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Though Melissa McCarthy's star went supernova just five years ago in a role so popular that she won both an Oscar nomination and an Emmy statue (Bridesmaids... oh please, you know the Emmy wasn't actually for Mike and Molly!) she's wasted approximately zero days since in cementing her unlikely place as a box office titan with star vehicles emerging annually since. Right now that means her new capitalist diva comedy The Boss and if it isn't Spy (2015) or The Heat (2013) level funny (sorry... but few things are) it's not bad. It sure as hell runs rings around Identity Thief (2013) and Tammy (2014) so it's firmly middle of the pack, if you ask me. (It's weird that the reviews so far are the worst of any of her solo vehicles.)

We call her place as a truly bankable actress 'unlikely' because it's just that. Guess how long it's been since audiences »
