You can't buy the kind of pre-noise generated by Top Boy, Ronan Bennett's east London street-gang drama aired over four successive nights last week. Would it be as good as The Wire? Would it put people off coming to the Olympics next year? Was it a kick in the teeth for the embattled residents of Hackney's blighted estates who weren't murderers and drug-dealers?
It looked to have authenticity, though admittedly I rely on TV and the papers for my idea of what that is. There were reassuring shots of rundown council blocks, furtive street activity, a pale-looking boy with one of those baby-eating dogs; a young mother succumbing to mental illness. »

She's most famous as the wise-cracking Kelly in Misfits, but there's a lot more to the Derby-born actor than that
"Alright mate?" A hand tipped with long neon plastic nails, balancing a fag between fingers, reaches out of a trailer door to greet me. It belongs to Lauren Socha, better known as Kelly in Misfits, the foul-mouthed young offender with the power to read your mind and deliver one-liners with immaculate timing. Today, filming the E4 show's third series on London's eerie Thamesmead estate, she's not playing Kelly, though. Except she is. But isn't. Having discovered, at the end of the last run, that they can be bought and sold, the gang's powers have changed. Nothing is quite the way it was. "I'm different people," Socha tries to explain, wary of giving anything away. "Kelly's a chav. I'm not playing a chav, I'm playing someone completely different: upbeat, very excited and a bit weird. »

They're back! Misfits returns for Series 3 on Sunday 30 October at 10pm on E4.
Check out the new guy Rudy played by Joseph Gilgun. He lines up alongside Misfits resident delinquents Bafta award winner Lauren Socha, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Antonia Thomas and Iwan Rheon in the super-sized series which sees its run extended to eight episodes.
New kid on the block Rudy gets a rude awakening in his first few days of community service, learning that with the keys to the infamous locker room comes a great deal of running and screaming and, in some instances, killing. But that really is the least of his worries. More pressing is just how to keep his secret superpower...well...secret. And just how super is it? As in is it one from the A- List?
The rest of the gang are also back with their all-new powers. So just how did that trade-off with »

The BAFTA winning show from writer/showrunner Howard Overman will be crossing the pond via Gossip Girl producer Josh Schwartz to begin early pre-production for a pitch to American networks. Misfits follows five outsiders on community service who get struck by a flash storm and lumbered with special powers. Hard as nails Kelly (Lauren Socha) can suddenly hear people’s thoughts, shamed sporting hero Curtis (Nathan Stewart Jarrett) discovers he has the ability to turn back time when he regrets something, and party girl Alisha (Antonia Thomas) can send people into a sexual frenzy when they touch her skin. Even painfully shy Simon (Iwan Rheon) can make himself invisible when he feels he’s being ignored, which makes it all the more hard to swallow for smart aleck Nathan (Robert Sheehan), who »

Hot lost property
It's the staple of all good awards ceremonies everywhere – the winner who accidentally leaves their gong in the back of a cab. Sunday night's Bafta TV awards at London's Grosvenor House hotel was reassuringly no different, with Piv Bernth, producer of BBC4's acclaimed (and now Bafta-winning) Danish crime thriller The Killing losing contact with her Bafta mask in a black cab near Marble Arch just after midnight. If you should see said item – they look a bit like this, except with different writing at the bottom, do drop Monkey a line. We don't have a reward though – we can't speak for Bernth of course – so don't expect to make, ahem ... a killing.
Can the Bafta awards be nominated for next month's Baftas? Monkey only asks after last night's ceremony was responsible for one of the small screen moments of the year to date – when »
This year's awards were dominated by the BBC, but do viewers agree with the judges' decisions?
So the votes have been cast, and the prizes handed out – but what do you make of the winners of this year's television Baftas? We saw Sherlock triumph over Downton Abbey in the drama series category – deservedly in my opinion, although probably not in others' – but Benedict Cumberbatch lose out on leading actor to Eric and Ernie's Daniel Rigby, who also beat off strong competition from Jim Broadbent and new Doctor Who star Matt Smith.
Martin Freeman, Watson to Cumberbatch's Holmes, won the supporting actor Bafta over Downton's Brendan Coyle, Misfits' Robert Sheehan, and This is England 86's Johnny Harris. But Shane Meadows' Channel 4 drama did triumph in the leading actress category, with Vicky McClure (Lol) taking the award over Anna Maxwell Martin (South Riding), Natalie Press (Five Daughters) and Juliet Stevenson »

The Supporting Actor award went to Freeman for his performance as Dr. Watson in Sherlock, which also won the Best Drama Series BAFTA. Lead Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for Best Actor, but lost out to Daniel Rigby.
The Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme BAFTA was awarded to Steve Coogan for The Trip, the first time in 12 years. Coogan last won a BAFTA in 1998, when he picked up two awards for I’m Alan Partridge.

Lauren Socha has admitted that she was "completely shocked" to win a BAFTA. The Misfits star picked up the 'Best Supporting Actress' gong at last night's British Television Academy Awards. "I didn't see it coming," Socha told reporters. "I really didn't. I didn't get my hopes up - I was just honoured to be nominated again. So when they said, 'Lauren Socha', I was completely shocked." Socha joked that the prize has trumped her upcoming 21st birthday but explained that she doesn't want to keep the gong herself. "I want my agent to have it," she said. "I just don't want to be clumsy with it and leave (more) »

But Benedict Cumberbatch, who starred as Sherlock Holmes, lost out in the lead actor category to Daniel Rigby, who played Eric Morecambe in another BBC drama, the Victoria Wood-produced comic biopic Eric and Ernie.
Freeman described the show as a "love story" between Holmes and Watson. "Not just a love story – these two people who love and need each other in a slightly dysfunctional relationship, but in a relationship that works," he said. »

Joe Gilgun has signed up to appear in the new series of Misfits. Channel 4 announced that the actor has landed the role of Rudy in the show. Rudy is a replacement for the much-loved character Nathan, played by Robert Sheehan. It emerged last month that Sheehan has decided to leave the programme. BBC1 dramas go head to head for best actor award, while E4's Misfits picks up four nominations
They are both renowned for their ability to solve riddles and tendency to confound their companions, but only one of them does it with the help of a sonic screwdriver. Now Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who will go head to head at next month's Bafta television awards after the stars of both BBC1 dramas were nominated for the prestigious best actor prize.
Matt Smith, whose return as the Doctor was watched by 6.5 million on Saturday, will do battle with Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of BBC1's modern retelling of the Sherlock Holmes story. Doctor Who has previously been named best drama by Bafta, but nearly 50 years after it first appeared on screen it has never before received a nomination for its lead actor.
The nominations were a double reward for Steven Moffat, »
