DVD and Blu-Ray Releases: December 21st - Mega Shark is the Devil in Dead Space

21 December 2010 12:22 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We now have even more proof that holiday revelers are not thinking about horror as there are only three notable titles this week. What do you think about Devil being released so close to this religious holiday?

Zombie fans among us should appreciate The Horde; however, if The Foywonder's recent tweet is any indication, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus may not be a shiny present from Santa after all.

For the gamers out there, your early Xmas present just arrived in the form of a downloadable Dead Space 2 (watch trailer) demo arriving today on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Devil

La Horde or La Fin du La Monde?: A Horror Movie Review

21 December 2010 6:00 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*La Horde aka The Horde releases on DVD today and here writer Ed Sum adds his thoughts.

Directors: Yannick Dahan, and Benjamin Rocher.

Writers: Yannick Dahan, Benjamin Rocher, Arnaud Bordas, and Stéphane Moïssakis.

Is it the end of the world already? The widely anticipated North American DVD release of La Horde will hit stores Dec 21st, 2010. This video will certainly be one to delight fans who are familiar with the stars of French entertainment—actor Eriq Ebouaney (Cape of Good Hope, Kingdom of Heaven) plays Markudi and rapper Doudou Masta plays Bola, his brother. They demonstrate a chemistry that’s normally reserved for a Quentin Tarantino product.

This engagement helps because what happens throughout the film is atypical for a gangster flick. After the murder of a detective at the start of the film, certain members of the French police decide to go vigilante on the worst night possible for life in Paris. »

Announcing the Top Five International Horror Films for 2010!

20 December 2010 10:31 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Well, we have taken a look at the "Best of" on the domestic circuit, in relation to indie films. Now, let us go global to track down the best in international horror. This is a year where the vile was unleashed with the Human Centipede to the action oriented zombie film the Devil's Playground. This reviewer admits a weakness in the areas of Asian and Italian films, from abroad. If it is not Takashi Miike, then this movie lover has likely not heard of it. Giallo is another film genre that does not appeal here.

However, there were several good outings from Scandinavian countries like Dead Snow and French horror continues towards an apex with movies such as La Horde and High Lane. Some unreleased projects like the serial killer franchise Fritt Vilt 3 (Cold Prey 3) will be included in this list. So, sit back, relax and let this movie reviewer »

This week's new films

17 September 2010 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Winter's Bone (15)

(Debra Granik, 2010, Us) Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan. 100 mins

What No Country For Old Men did for west Texas, this striking landscape thriller does for Missouri's Ozark mountains. This is no country for poor women: an insular rural community clouded by drugs and patriarchy where they do things their way. So when Ree learns her father's skipped bail, and the family home was his security, she must ask difficult questions in dangerous places – chiefly among her extended outlaw family. Tough suspense, documentary-like observation and character drama are perfectly balanced.

I'm Still Here (15)

(Casey Affleck, 2010, Us) Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Combs, Anthony Langdon. 107 mins

What was Joaquin thinking? This film won't clear that up, but it at least shows you what he was doing: taking drugs, falling out with friends and the movie biz, rapping badly and descending into mumbling incoherence – apparently.

The Other Guys (12A)

(Adam McKay, 2010, Us) Will Ferrell, »

The Horde (2009) Movie Review No. 2

29 August 2010 9:29 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

The new wave of French horror marches on relentlessly with “The Horde”, a fast paced zombie thriller which marks the debut of writer directors Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher. Having won Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography at the 2010 Fantasporto International Film Festival, the film has been building up a fair amount of buzz as a superior example of the post “28 Days Later” sprinting ghoul apocalyptic subgenre. With a vaguely recognisable cast that includes the likes of Claude Perron (“Amelie”), Eriq Ebouaney (“Transporter 3”), Aurelien Récoing (“Intimate Enemies”) and Doudou Masta (“Arthur and the Minimoys”), the film keeps the brutal action coming thick and fast, with Dahan and Rocher aiming for a hard boiled edge in the style of classic John Carpenter. The plot is neatly streamlined, and quickly gets down to business as a bunch of cops break into an abandoned high rise apartment block where a gang of drug dealers are hiding out, »

Watch: Official Us Trailer for French Zombie Film 'The Horde'

20 August 2010 12:05 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

IFC Films has debuted a new official Us trailer on YouTube for the release of The Horde, a French zombie film that we've been writing about since earlier this year. I'm sure a few of you probably already have a copy of this on DVD, but for those of us in the Us who are zombie fans, this is really our first chance to check it out. I like the gritty style of horror/genre films coming out of France these days, so I'm interested in seeing this, but this trailer is pretty awful, especially the shitty dubbing (not to mention that cheesy voice over). I don't know why they did that, but if you're into zombie movies (or French flicks) then check it out anyway. French Zombie Flick “La Horde” On VOD This Month

20 August 2010 8:11 AM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

I profiled this French zombie flick, titled La Horde, back in May, with an expected Us debut via IFC’s on-demand channel this month.

I’d forgotten all about it; and, thankfully, was reminded of it this morning while researching something else. Did any of you happen to remember and catch it?

IFC says it aired on August 11th, although, I can’t immediately tell if it was just a single day screening, or if it’s available throughout the month. IFC’s website doesn’t make it easy to find these things out. But it looks like it definitely aired on the 11th.

A quick recap… You should remember Eriq Ebouaney… his highest profile role likely being in Raoul Peck’s wonderful 2000 film Lumumba, as the titular character.

It's an unwritten rule in zombie film making that the beginning of the film is just a day in the life. Films which follow this pattern begin with people going about their various petty affairs, going to work, getting groceries, scratching themselves, and all the other common activities that make up humdrum existence. It's refreshing, then, that a film has finally been made which captures a scenario wherein the zombie apocalypse crashes down upon a completely unrelated drama.
