Born to German immigrants and a native Philadelphian and graduate of Ephrata High School, she began competing in beauty pageants in the early 1950s and won the titles of "Miss Ephrata Fair and Tobacco Queen" (of Lancaster County) and both "Miss Pennsylvania AMVET" and "Miss National AMVET" before winning the crowns of "Miss Pennsylvania" in 1953 and "Miss America" in 1954.
