Next month, Late Night With Seth Meyers will compete for best variety series at the Emmys for the very first time. It won’t be the show’s first time in the hallowed Emmy halls — Late Night has been nominated for its writing excellence in past years — but the host told THR that this, the holy grail of talk show honors, simply hits differently because of the way it represents the work of everyone on staff.
“It’s an emotional relief,” Meyers said during a recent THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media. “And now we won’t feel the same stress next year, waiting for the nominations. The difference between zero and one is that if we get one nomination, forever, that’s totally fine, but zero forever was a little bit rough.”

Although the feature film “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” was released on Disney+ and not in theaters, director Akiva Schaffer knows the importance of seeing a movie with an audience, as proven by the film’s tastemakers screening at the D23 conference and its L.A. world premiere.
“At home, it’s so easy to have a look at your phone,” he tells Variety. “You can miss half the things because they’re visual in the movie, but then again, as somebody who’s put out those movies and had nobody in the theaters, that’s not any good either.”
He’s referencing the poor box-office performance of his last feature, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (2016), which he directed and starred in along with the other two members of musical trio the Lonely Island: Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. Since then, the film has garnered a cult following.

The Emmys love to reward “Saturday Night Live” stars who come back to guest-host the show, but this could be the first time voters honor an alum for Best Comedy Guest Actor who was strictly a writer for the show, not a regular cast member. John Mulaney has been a regular fixture at the Emmys, racking up 2 wins out of 12 nominations as a writer, songwriter and producer over the past decade, but he has never been nominated for a performance award. This year, though, he could even win.
Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s users as of this writing, Mulaney ranks second in the category with odds of 9/2, behind front-runner Peter MacNicol (“Veep”). But six of the Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets say Mulaney will prevail: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Ed Martin (Media Village), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly...

In the fall of 2009, Kenan Thompson had a simple, ridiculous idea for a character that kept making him laugh: the host of a talk show obsessed with his own theme song. “He just can’t stop singing it,” Thompson says, in his interview for our recent profile. “I feel like if we made the movie version, it would haunt him while he was sleeping and shit. Over and over again, like, ‘I can’t stop.’ He approached Saturday Night Live writer Bryan Tucker (now the show’s co-head-writer) with the idea,...

"Smash" has a bit of an Emmys problem. The show, which follows the creation of a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, is entering the Emmy race for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, but with only two songs.
According to Variety, the series produced 19 original songs, many performed by Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty, but only one song from the songwriting team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman can be submitted. Emmy rules dictate only one song from a team can be submitted. The duo, according to Variety, have submitted "Let Me Be Your Star," the duet between McPhee and Hilty at the end of the first episode of "Smash."
Ryan Tedder's "Touch Me," a club-like song performed by McPhee in Episode 8, was also submitted since it hailed from a different writing team than Shaiman and Wittman.

Rosie O’Donnell’s new daily talk show on Own: Oprah Winfrey Network is looking to shake off lackluster ratings with a new executive producer and a new set. Shane Farley, who worked with O’Donnell on her previous Emmy-winning syndicated talker The Rosie O’Donnell Show has come on as executive producer. He replaces Page Hurwitz, who as executive producer oversaw The Rosie Show‘s launch and first three months on the air. Farley has more than 15 years of experience producing talk shows, most recently Rachael Ray. The Rosie Show kicked off 2012 with a new smaller and brightly colored set. It fits about 70 audience members, about a fifth of the original set, and is inspired by Rosie’s art studio at her home in New York. The radical downsizing does not allow for a band setup, though Own said that “musical director Katreese Barnes will continue to be fully engaged behind the scenes,...

Chicago — Katreese Barnes sat at the piano on the set of the "Rosie O’Donnell Show" late last week, playing for a group of producers trying to work out the kinks in the show’s opening musical number.
As she played and sang bits of the song, to be sung by O’Donnell during the show's premiere tonight on the Own network (the lyrics included something about Oprah Winfery offering a show and O'Donnell packing the kids in a box and moving to Chicago, and then male dancers appear at some point), the group nodded and bobbed their heads approvingly.
"I have a dream job," said Barnes, who last month was named the show's musical director after spending 10 years at "Saturday Night Live," the last five as musical director. "Of all the jobs in the world, mine is to play music for a comedy show."
