2018 Grammys telecast review: James Corden took a backseat to let Patti LuPone, Kesha & Childish Gambino excel on stage
James Corden is an old hand at hosting award shows, so you feel as though you’re in good hands whenever he takes the stage. Indeed, the 2018 Grammy Awards he emceed on January 28 were his second in a row. However, 2018 Corden wasn’t as active a participant as 2017 Corden was. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; sometimes with award show hosts less is more, and when he did appear he was usually a welcome sight.

It was telling when within the first half-hour of the three-and-a-half hour event Corden had only appeared on-stage for a scant few minutes. After Kendrick Lamar‘s performance opened the show Corden forewent an ambitious production number or monologue in favor of saying just a few words to get the show underway. He joked that this was the most diverse lineup of nominees in Grammy history “and for the second year in a row

Box Office: ‘Justice League’ Soars to $13 Million on Thursday Night
Warner Bros.-DC’s “Justice League” has opened with a solid, but not spectacular $13 million at around 3,700 North American locations on Thursday night.

The number for “Justice League” is the fifth-biggest Thursday preview of 2017, following “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and “Thor: Ragnarok.” “Justice League” tied “It’s” Thursday preview gross. Guitar Superhero Gary Clark Jr. on Covering the Beatles’ ‘Come Together’ for ‘Justice League’

Guitar Superhero Gary Clark Jr. on Covering the Beatles’ ‘Come Together’ for ‘Justice League’
To a lot of music fans of the post-rock generation, “Guitar Hero” is the name of a console game, not something that comes along in real life in the 2010s. Gary Clark Jr. is among the very few of those who’ve been minted lately. He may or may not count as an actual superhero, but there are enough of those to go around in the new “Justice League” film, which has his and Junkie Xl’s cover of the Beatles’ “Come Together” as the principal theme.

On a less heroic note, Clark Jr. also recently collaborated on a cover of Neil Young’s “Ohio” for a very different screen project, Ken Burns’ “The Vietnam War.” Variety spoke with the blues-rocker about both recordings, his Batman wanna-be inclinations, and how he plans to mix blues and hip-hop on his next album.

You’re going to be playing “Come Together” a lot on TV this year. It’s so non-linear

Can Warner Bros.’ Expensive, Long-Awaited ‘Justice League’ Deliver the Hit That DC Needs?

Can Warner Bros.’ Expensive, Long-Awaited ‘Justice League’ Deliver the Hit That DC Needs?
Warner Bros. is holding its breath as the studio prepares to unveil “Justice League” this weekend.

The costly superhero team adventure carries a production budget of more than $250 million, according to several sources, and with it, the hope that DC’s interconnected cinematic universe of comic book heroes and villains can deliver huge audiences around the globe.

When tens of millions of dollars in worldwide marketing and distribution costs are added in, “Justice League” would have to bring in a lofty sum of around $600 million from ticket sales alone and additional revenue from ancillaries like pay-tv and home entertainment in order to turn a profit.

Warner Bros. executives are already concerned that the movie’s debut this weekend — projected to be $110 million — is less than what they had hoped for. In comparison, last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” opened to $166 million. The film will also face some competition over the upcoming holiday weekend from another

Playback: Patty Jenkins on ‘Wonder Woman’ and Crashing Through Glass Ceilings
Welcome to “Playback,” a Variety podcast bringing you exclusive conversations with the talents behind many of today’s hottest films.

Two months ago Patty Jenkins signed a landmark deal to direct the sequel to one of the year’s most acclaimed and popular films. “Wonder Woman” felt like a breath of fresh air amid an ongoing DC cinematic universe that has struggled, whether with critics or, as with the troubled “Justice League,” in actual production. But despite becoming the highest-paid female filmmaker ever, Jenkins never really saw herself as a barricade stormer.

Listen to this week’s episode of “Playback” below. New episodes air every Thursday.

Click here for more episodes of “Playback.”

“I think because my mother was, I thought that was really behind us,” Jenkins, who likes to consider herself a “last wave feminist,” says. “I wasn’t thinking about, ‘And then I could be the first woman who…’ Nothing I’ve done
