On Cusp of 40, ‘Austin City Limits’ Mixes Jeff Bridges, Sheryl Crow With Video-Streaming Experiments

19 May 2014 10:24 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Austin City Limits” is humming an interesting tune: The PBS musical staple is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a landmark two-hour TV special. Yet its top producer sees a day when digital transmission of video and audio plays a significantly greater role in how the show operates.

“The day may come when as many or more people will be watching our show online as will be watching it on TV,” said Terry Lickona, the show’s longtime producer. “Acl,” as it is often called, has already begun streaming its taping sessions, which often make it to television in edited form six months later. “It’s difficult to experiment, but I think that sense of immediacy and immediate gratification is something people want to experience, and so why not make that possible?” Even so, he acknowledged, PBS “is our home base, and hopefully always will be.”

‘Chef’s’ Jon Favreau: ‘I Shoot Food the Way Michael Bay Shoots Women in Bikinis’

8 March 2014 5:15 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Austin – From the moment he stepped onstage at the Paramount Theater, Jon Favreau was looking to entertain. “Chef,” the film he wrote, starred in, co-produced and directed, opened the 2014 South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival Friday night, with all but a standing ovation.

“I shoot food the way Michael Bay shoots women in bikinis,” Favreau told Variety at the after-party, held at Mohawk, several blocks from the theater. Prior to the screening, Favreau (pictured) and the cast dined at Franklin’s barbeque, a famous Austin barbeque joint, which makes a cameo in the film, as does musician Gary Clark Jr., who was deep into his second hour of a live performance.

The movie takes place in Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans and Austin, follows a chef (Favreau) as he quits his job and travels cross country in a food truck with his son (Emjay Anthony) and his sous chef (John Leguizamo).

SXSW Film Review: ‘Chef’

8 March 2014 12:15 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Foodies who feasted on “Big Night,” “Babette’s Feast” and “Eat Drink Man Woman” may flock to “Chef,” a lightweight but high-calorie confection in which the actors often run the risk of being upstaged by all manner of scrumptious-looking cuisine. Written and directed by Jon Favreau, who also stars as a professionally frustrated chef who earns a second helping of happiness while operating a food truck, this amiably rambling dramedy will play best with audiences primed to go with the flow of its leisurely pacing while enjoying the cross-country ride. And, of course, savoring the views of that tempting grub.

The slightly longish setup establishes Carl Casper (Favreau) as a stressed-for-success master chef in a trendy Los Angeles restaurant where he is absolute master of his kitchen — as long as he pleases the establishment’s demanding owner (Dustin Hoffman). When an even more demanding restaurant blogger (Oliver Platt) pans Casper »
