2011: A Year in Review Part I

30 December 2011 7:27 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

2011 was one of the best years for film in recent years.  There are about 25 films that could have made my top ten list and each film in my top 5 could be my number one.  I saw about 100 films this year and I still wish I could have seen more.  I feel very comfortable with my top ten and I feel like it was a good representative of the year in film.  However I do feel that people looking at this article should go over to Sound On Sight and see all the staff’s individual lists, as well as the honorable mentions that just missed my list.  You will find a great collection of films on those lists.

1. Martha Marcy May Marlene

Directed by Sean Durkin

I saw Sean Durkin’s directorial debut in August and knew as soon as the last frame came up that this was the best picture of the year. »

New 'Hunger Games' Photos Take Aim... and Fire!

29 December 2011 4:24 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

View Gallery » It looks like Lionsgate wasn't going to let the year end without at least one more tantalizing glimpse at "The Hunger Games," as two new production photos were posted today on the film's official Facebook page.

Both of the pics feature Jennifer Lawrence, who's looking more and more Katniss-ish with each new "Hunger Games" photo. You get to see two sides of Katniss in these pictures, with one shot of her in action (with bow and arrow!) and another of her looking contemplative in a stunning medium close-up.

Check out the new photos in our "Hunger Games" gallery, and rejoice in the fact that March 23, 2012 is less than three months away. »

Oscars: Why can’t kids compete at the Academy Awards? – Awards Alley

29 December 2011 8:45 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Sean O’Connell

hollywoodnews.com: Why do kids have a hard time breaking through at the Oscars?

It’s an interesting question, and one that is dissected over at Gold Derby this morning, where they point out that multiple Oscar-worthy performances from underage talents could be overlooked this season if the Academy’s tendencies disrupt the momentum of select campaigns.

That’s not to say kids are never nominated for the Oscar. Just last year, Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence competed in top categories for their work in “True Grit” and “Winter’s Bone,” respectively. Abigail Breslin, Haley Joel Osment and Anna Paquin competed and, in the case of the latter, won for “The Piano.”

This year, I can rattle off a handful of young performers who should be in the discussion for Oscar consideration:

- Thomas Horn for “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

- Daniel Radcliffe for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 »

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: The Best of ‘The Hunger Games’ 2011

29 December 2011 | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

One of the greatest things about Movies.com’s Countdown series is that you really get a sense of what it takes to develop a feature. In 2011 alone, we watched as Lionsgate settled on a rating and a release date, followed by a casting director who helped narrow down a stellar list of potential leads to land on Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Shortly after, images were altered and a slew of fan-made posters hit the web, as did a number of other Hunger Games-inspired items like jewelry, quilts and more, adding to the already massive amount of Hunger Games devotee art. The month of April basically became the month of the Hunger Games Tributes, as day by day we met the innocent faces who’d eventually have to head into the arena and fight to the death...

Hunger Games Sound Line-Up Beyond Taylor Swift

The Hunger Games movie won’t hit theaters until March of 2012, but already, the film’s soundtrack is causing quite a stir. Earlier this week Boomtron invited fans to give a listen to the track titled “Safe and Sound”. It’s the soundtrack’s first single to be released and it features the voices of Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars. Ready to discover what else the soundtrack will have in store for you? We thought you might be.

According to EW, Swift is joined by some big names in indie music. Universal made the announcement that the Decemberists and Win Butler and Regine Chassagne of Arcade Fire will also be featured on the album by T-Bone Burnett and James Newton Howard. Howard replaced Danny Elfman, who had scheduling conflicts. The frontrunners of Arcade Fire are pictured above.

'Hunger Games' beats 'Twilight' in 2012 buzz poll-What do you want to see most? (Poll)

Is it over? Has the juggernaut that is "The Twilight Saga" finally met it's match? With one final movie to go in the series, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2" (that's a mouth full), may have slipped in popularity. Not far, of course, but the new hotness in town in the tween market is "The Hunger Games."

In a poll by Next Movie, "The Hunger Games," starring Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and based on the wildly popular novel by Suzanne Collins garnered 51 percent of the votes for the movie fans are most looking forward to in 2012. "Breaking Dawn Part 2" took 45 percent.

Even more surprising? "Twilight" stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson lost out as best on-screen couple to Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, who played Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

"Deathly Hallows: Part 2," won the title for best 2011 movie with 52 percent »

The 9 Most Memorable 'Hunger Games' Moments of 2011

28 December 2011 12:00 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

We can hardly believe it, but just a year ago "The Hunger Games" had no release date, no cast, no trailer and certainly no nail polish line to speak of. In 2011, though, the world became Panem, and when we fans think back on this year, these are the things we'll remember most.

Do you agree with our list? Share your thoughts and memories in the comments section below.

Jennifer Lawrence Is Katniss!

The movie's cast filled out (agonizingly) slowly this spring. Rumors of Hailee Steinfeld and Chloe Moretz filled the early months of the year, so we were all a little shell-shocked when we finally learned that Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence would be our Katniss. Fans were even more surprised by the choices of Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth as Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, respectively. Other additions were met with glee, though, like Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy and Donald Sutherland for President Snow. »
