Though Tuesday night’s American Idol victor, Phillip Phillips, is a rocker, the show has undoubtedly become a breeding ground for country artists. From Carrie Underwood to Kellie Pickler to Scotty McCreery, a fair amount will be represented at next month’s 11th Annual Cmt Music Awards. Cmt President Brian Philips tells The Hollywood Reporter that shows like Idol and The Voice have been “particularly kind to country.” Photos: Cmt Awards 2011 Red Carpet Arrivals “I think these music competition shows have been good for music… These shows have given us some of our biggest and prolific stars,” Philips said.

When NBC’s rival singing competition The Voice returned in February, I felt like I was the only Idol fan left in America. Media outlets championed NBC’s chair-spinning competition, with its flashy format — an audition style that’s admittedly superior to Idol’s — and sass-spewing judges, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. “The Voice is more relevant, more meaningful, more compelling and more entertaining right now,” said Alex Strachan of the Montreal Gazette. “After a decade, we no longer believe in the Idol factory,” wrote EW’s Mark Harris. Those barbs stung me (an American Idol junkie) personally »

If you’ll allow me to paraphrase Phillip Phillips (covering the Zombies), “it’s that time in the (American Idol) season for loving (our favorites).” Indeed, the Idoloonie Nation has devoted the last four months to auditioning dozens of singers for the role of America’s Next Top iTunes Obsession, and with each of the five remaining finalists having delivered 13 live solo performances, our allegiances have pretty much been pledged, our opinions have been pretty well formed, our speed-dialing fingers have been worn down to bone and sinew (as has the space between Randy Jackson’s ears).

Gac's before-they-were-famous series Day Jobs (Wednesdays, 10/9c) regularly tasks country stars with working their old 9-to-5s, but on occasion, the series allows artists to get a taste of their other dream gigs. For Kellie Pickler, that means caring for animals — and awfully large ones at that. In tonight's new episode, the American Idol alum, who recently released the throwback-country album 100 Proof, learns how to be a caregiver for elephants. We asked...

Jessica Sanchez entered some risky territory on "American Idol" last night -- by tackling one of the biggest rock 'n roll songs ever: Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Once last night's Queen theme was announced, everyone was wondering which contestant would cover the classic hit ... and if it would live up to some of the other times it was memorably performed on the show.Sanchez is known for her amazing voice, but was almost eliminated last week until the judges decided to use their one save on her.So ... how did she do? And how does it stack up against Constantine Maroulis, Kellie Pickler, Michael Johns and Adam Lambert and Bret Loewenstern, who both auditioned for the show with the tune? Watch all the performances below, then vote for your favorite!Michael Johns: Kellie Pickler Constantine Maroulis: Bret Loewenstern: Adam Lambert ... who only sang a snippet of the song »

Skylar Laine has landed at the bottom of Digital Spy's poll for American Idol's Top 7. The 17-year-old country singer failed to impress readers during Wednesday night's 'Songs From This Decade' theme with her rendition of Kellie Pickler's 'Didn't Know How Much I Loved You', bringing in only 7%. Similarly unpopular was Hollie Cavanagh's performance of Pink's 'F***ing Perfect', which managed 7.5%. Faring only slightly better was gospel belter Joshua Ledet, whose cover of Bruno Mars's 'Runaway Baby' received 8.2%, while Elise Testone's highly praised rendition of Lady GaGa's 'You (more) »

This week on American Idol, the top seven contestants took on songs from 2010 and on…finally songs from the present day across the board. Akon joined Jimmy Iovine to mentor the finalists who all delivered excellent vocals though some still lacked something in their performance. Because of this lack, this live performance show as a whole was not as enthralling as others. Sanchez and two others may have made up for this but it is getting down to the wire and the contestants can’t save all of the bells and whistles for finale night. They won’t get there without it as it’s not just about the vocals. With the usual standouts that there were this week, we can all easily guess who’s going home tonight… or can we?
Cameras visited the hometowns of all of the contestants this week which was a fun look inside each finalists’ home environment. »

Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson, and Steven Tyler were back behind the judging table last night on the latest nerve-wracking episode of American Idol. The seven remaining contestants performed songs from 2010 to present day including covers of popular tracks by Kellie Pickler, Maroon 5, and Lady Gaga. The judges had a hard time predicting who might go home, but we'll find out later today when the results are revealed. Fan favorite Phillip Phillips had a less than stellar performance while Elise Testone, who's been in and out of the bottom three each week, got high marks from the judges. J Lo often has friends, family, and boyfriend Casper Smart visiting her on the set or sitting in the audience and last night was no exception. J Lo was joined by best friend, and actress, Leah Remini, who chatted with her before and after the taping. Leah watched the show from backstage, »

Video killed the radio star, as everybody knows. And then Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew suffocated the video star with a plastic bag (as part of a VH1 special presentation) in the spring of 2008.
Which is one of several reasons that this week’s American Idol theme — Music from the Current Decade (2010-2012) — made me a little skittish. Would I be forced to spend the entire night Googling snippets of lyrics in order to properly identify the contestants’ song choices? Would the beloved Top 7 suddenly start sounding like the love children of an immersion blender and an Xbox 360? And would »

On Wednesday night's "American Idol," judges praised Jessica Sanchez, who belted Jazmine Sullivan's "Stuttering," and gave a standing ovation to Joshua Ledet, who celebrated his 20th birthday with the up-tempo "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars.
The Week 7 finalists, who sang songs of the past three years, were mentored by Clay Aiken. The former "Idol" runner-up pegged Sanchez, 16, as a standout from before the final 13 were selected, saying, "She's gonna be a legend one day. »

American Idol Top 7 Perform: What Makes Idol Beautiful
Before I actually get to the show, I'd like to apologize for missing last week's results recap. Unfortunately lack of Internet plus a holiday weekend made for busy times. I can't say that I was terribly surprised by Deandre's exit. And I can't say I'll be shocked at whoever gets booted tonight, because 'Songs from this Decade' night on American Idol turned out pretty well.
Before I get to any specifics on performances, I'd like to hand out some advice for all the contestants. Stop picking obvious songs. If there was one constant for most of the night, it was that every performance had a certain predictability to it. This was good in some ways, as it reemphasized that the contestants left on American Idol know who they are, and that they can sing songs that are on today's charts. On the other hand, »

We're down to seven very important performers on American Blandstand, and I don't hate any of them. They can sing! When we ask them to! With Colton Dixon's flirty repression and Jessica Sanchez's storm-front urgency on last night's show, we have plenty of gems to analyze.
And we'll get to that right after I declare my personal choice for the theme of "post-2010 songs." I'd perform "Rabiosa" by Shakira, since she's the kookiest (and greatest?) pop sensation alive, I'd say. Totally weird too. "She Wolf" is as cuckoo as they come, and addictive too. Plus, my Spanish side is nonexistent, so I hope my performance would be offensive in a Natalie Wood-playing-Maria-in-West Side Story way.
Now: To the rankings, kids! Be sure to offer up your own post-2010 song choices in the comments.
7. Hollie Cavanagh, "F***in' Perfect"
Periwinkle Princess tumbled down the balustrade again, and now I'm pretty sure she's toast. »
