30 June 2016 9:58 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Some shows threw all their money into shooting a pilot. Some shows have shot multiple episodes. Some shows have found alternate distribution opportunities already. Some shows remain unseen. All of them, though, want to go beyond their current status.

Some of these pilots were not world premieres, but all of the ones I saw represented the impressive state of independent production today; where a shoestring budget can still produce content on a level equal to what you might watch on TV. Below are just a few of the pilots that impressed me most, »

Exclusive: Jessica Seinfeld Appears in New Web Series to Promote Bravo’s ‘Odd Mom Out’ – Watch

16 June 2016 7:59 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Bravo is taking a page out of Jerry Seinfeld’s book and releasing a new web series, “Sitting in Diners Eating Donuts,” (an obvious riff on Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”), to promote the second season of its first scripted comedy, “Odd Mom Out.”

The web shorts feature “Odd Mom Out” executive producer and star Jill Kargman sitting down with fellow funny New Yorkers, discussing topics relevant to that week’s episode. Jessica Seinfeld, wife of Jerry, shares tidbits about her family life and childhood. Claudia Oshry, a plucky young blogger known as “Girl With No Job,” matches her brand of “modern ortho” Jewish humor with Kargman’s Upper East Sider outsider schtick.

Odd Mom Out” is a half-hour comedy series based on Kargman’s book, “Momzillas,” about one mom’s failure to fit in with the upper echelon of the Upper East Side. Kargman’s character isn’t quite rich enough or together enough to impress the Stepford moms she encounters at pre-school interviews: “Between Lexington and Fifth, I’m a charity case.”

Serving as her foil is her sister-in-law and the show’s shining star, Abby Elliott. Elliott ranks among the many promising comedians whose tenure at “Saturday Night Live” was too short-lived for many fans, but with “Odd Mom Out” she has returned with a flourish. Other standouts include Andy Buckley (“The Office”) as Kargman’s husband, and Joanna Cassidy (“Six Feet Under“) as her mother-in-law.

The first two webisodes debut exclusively on IndieWire. The second season of “Odd Mom Out” premieres June 20 at 10Pm on Bravo.

Bob Elliott, Half of Comedy Duo Bob and Ray, Dies at 92

3 February 2016 12:16 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Bob Elliott, half of the famed radio and television comedy team of Bob and Ray, died Tuesday from throat cancer, the New York Times reports. He was 92.

Elliott and his comedy partner Ray Goulding performed unique skits, as they took turns playing the jokester or straight man, while most comedy duos had one permanent person for each role. Soft-spoken Elliot and rambunctious Ray hosted the TV sketch show “The Bob and Ray Show” from 1951-1953.

The duo recorded comedy albums and frequently appeared on “The Tonight Show” and “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and were seen in Norman Lear’s “Cold Turkey” and Arthur Hiller’s “Author! Author!” Staring in 1970, they starred in “Bob and Ray: The Two and Only” on Broadway.

“I like jokes, but Ray and I, we never did jokes,” Elliott said in a 2011 interview with the Archive of American Television. “We weren’t in that line of humor. »
