Moving forward on Ioc President Thomas Bach's reform process, Olympic leaders backed his proposals Saturday for setting up an Olympic television channel, reshaping the bid city procedure and adding more flexibility to the sports program. Bach convened a summit of 16 key Ioc and sports officials in Lausanne, Switzerland, to press ahead with Olympic Agenda 2020, his strategic blueprint for the future. The leaders supported the platform of changes that Bach will put to a vote at a special International Olympic Committee session in Monaco from Dec. 8-9. Bach, who was elected as Jacques Rogge's successor in September, has

Lady Gaga revealed that she and Perez Hilton haven’t been BFFs since two days after her accident, when he texted her a picture of herself in a wheelchair with “Karma” written across it with Madonna pointing a gun at her.
The plot then thickened when a fan tweeted that Perez was in the lobby of her apartment building, allegedly trying to rent an apartment there. Security was dispatched while Gaga tweeted “Do I Need To Be Shot It In The Head For People To Understand That Him And Everyone Else That Harasses Me Has Gone Too Far? Im A Human Being.” For his part, Perez says she’s spreading lies about him [warning: link to his site] and he’s receiving death threats online.

Athletics historians would have you believe that wrestling is oldest sport in the world. After all, archaeologists recently unearthed a fragment of papyrus dating back to 100 A.D. that lists a simple set of instructions for young men who wished to engage in the pastime. ("1: Take off your clothes. 2: Roll around on the ground with another naked man," presumably.) However there is a sport even older (and gayer) than wrestling, and it dates back to 600 B.C., when, on the Isle of Lesbos, the Greek poet Sappho began training young women in the art of Lesbian Shipping.
Maybe it is the femininity of the recreation that has caused it to be overlooked by scholars all these years. Or perhaps it is the game's innate brutality. The theoretical rules of Lesbian Shipping are as simple as those of ancient wrestling — 1) Choose two fictional female characters.

NEW YORK -- The millions of Chinese who tuned in for Monday's lighting of the Olympic torch saw a sanitized version of the event as China Central Television cut away from a protest for press freedom.
Observers in China watching CCTV said they were not shown footage of members of the French group Reporters Without Borders unfurl a banner during a speech by Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee, in Olympia, Greece.
Greek television carried a live broadcast of the brief incident, which took place in front of International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge and thousands of spectators at an event protected by more than 1,000 police officers.
CCTV, the host broadcaster for the Beijing Games, cut away from the protest and showed a prerecorded scene, preventing Chinese viewers from seeing the protest. Chinese television commentators did not mention the demonstration.
Greek police arrested three members of the activist group. They were detained and face possible criminal charges for evading security, breaking into the ceremony's ancient grounds and flashing a black banner depicting the games' trademark Olympic rings as handcuffs.

BEIJING -- Internet and mobile platform broadcast rights for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were awarded to CCTV.com, a part of state broadcaster China Central Television, the International Olympic Committee said Tuesday in Geneva.
China had 137 million Internet users at the end of 2006, second in the world to the U.S., and its mobile phone users numbered 515 million by August, making it the world's largest user group.
As a member of the Asian Broadcasting Union, CCTV already has acquired over-the-air TV rights for the Beijing Olympics. CCTV reaches nearly all of China's 340 million households.
The IOC is eager to boost deals with new media as it bids to extend the reach of the Olympics to a younger audience and diversify its media contracts for the games.
"We look forward to working with our broadcast partner CCTV and its digital arm, CCTV.com, to bring the excitement of the Olympic Games to a new generation of fans in China," IOC president Jacques Rogge said.

BEIJING -- China began the one-year countdown to the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Wednesday with a three-hour ceremony in Tiananmen Square that was broadcast nationwide to nearly 340 million households via China Central Television.
Expected to bring millions in advertising to CCTV, China's first-ever games carry the motto "One world, one dream". The dazzling lights and song and dance of the countdown were set against the backdrop of the portrait of Mao Zedong, the supreme icon of China's one party.
Beijing Mayor Wang Qishan, also the chairman of the Beijing Olympic organizing committee, introduced speeches by Wu Bangguo, China's second in command, and International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.
"It is a century-old dream of the Chinese people to host the Olympics, and we intend to use the games to promote greater friendship with the world," said Wu, leader of China's parliament, the National People's Congress. "I want to take this opportunity to show to the world that the Chinese people are committed to the success of the Olympic Games."
Amid widespread concern that the government cannot live up to its promises to the IOC to make the 2008 games the "Green Olympics" and provide unrestricted press freedom, Rogge said: "With one year to go, we can see fast achievements behind us and the great potential that lies ahead."
Rogge complimented Beijing on its $40 billion makeover, including the speedy delivery of such gleaming new sporting venues as the "Bird's Nest" National Stadium and the "Water Cube" swimming complex, which he said are "almost finished and look fantastic."
The so-called "live" broadcast of the ceremony that kicked off the one-year countdown to the start of the games at 8:08 p.m.
