Katy Perry has joined ABC’s “American Idol” reboot as a judge. ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey announced Perry’s addition to the show Tuesday at the network’s upfront presentation in New York.
“I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories,” said Perry. “I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough – from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”
The pop star has previously turned down offers for other singing competition shows like “X Factor,” which, like “Idol,” is produced by FremantleMedia. She was also a guest judge during Season 9 as a temporary replacement for Paula Abdul.
A 12-time Grammy nominee, Perry is one of the top selling music artists of all times »

ABC will make its upfront presentation to advertisers Tuesday at Lincoln Center — and attendees will be expecting an update on the network’s biggest new show, the revival of “American Idol.”
Sources tell Variety that a deal with Ryan Seacrest to return as series host is near completion, and that Trish Kinane is set to return as showrunner. Kinane will executive produce the revival with FremantleMedia North America. It is unclear whether Seacrest or Kinane will be in attendance at Tuesday’s upfront. But if a deal with Seacrest can be wrapped quickly, he would be a likely candidate to make an appearance at the presentation.
Variety has also learned that “Idol” alum Carrie Underwood has held talks with ABC and producers about joining “American Idol” as a judge. In addition, Adam Lambert’s name has been in the mix for a potential role, sources confirm. Reports out of the U.K »

Weird Al Yankovic has composed the theme song for the upcoming DreamWorks animated superhero adventure Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. The movie, based off of Dav Pilkey's best selling children's book series, isn't set to hit theaters until June 2nd but today DreamWorks has shared "Weird Al" Yankovic's perfect theme song. Yankovic proves that he was born to sing a song about a superhero that only wears underwear and a cape.
"Captain Underpants Theme Song" basically sets up the movie, mentioning key details including that the students only need to snap their fingers to hypnotize their principle turning him into his alter ego, Captain Underpants and his call of "Tra La La." Yankovic calls him the "waistband warrior" and then sings that it's "wedgie power time," while also calling him "the freaky bald dude in his underwear." The two and half minute song is catchy and perfect for »
American Idol lives! ABC has officially confirmed that it’s rebooting the reality competition series following its 2016 cancellation.
While we patiently wait for the show’s new network to announce a premiere date, judges and hosts, we’re looking back at where it all began for the biggest stars to come out of the show’s first 15 seasons.
Underwood claimed the Idol crown in season 4. When we first made her acquaintance, she was an Oklahoma farm girl who had never even been on a plane, but her rendition of “I Can’t Make You Love Me” proved she was destined for bigger things. »

It's becoming more likely that the American Idol TV show will be rebooted in the near future. ABC is reportedly close to making a deal for the singing competition TV series. Meanwhile, it seems Fox is also aggressively pursuing the reboot, which makes sense, since it was so successful for the network, the first time out. Last summer, former host Ryan Seacrest said he was up for an American Idol revival. Last week, however, he joined the syndicated Live with Kelly! talk show as the newest co-host opposite Kelly Ripa. While Live shoots in New York, Idol was an L.A.-based show during its original Fox run. According to Variety, past Idol winners and contestants, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Fantasia, Phillip Phillips, and Adam Lambert, could be attached to the new series. Hollywood is abuzz — yet again — about prospects of an “American Idol” reboot, this time at ABC with a return slated for spring of 2018. Will the once formidable music competition show, which spent 15 years at Fox, fly again?
Former “Idol” associate musical director Michael Orland, who coached hundreds of finalists during his decade-and-a-half working on the show, thinks the franchise is ripe for a refresh. “‘American Idol’ was, and still is, the biggest and best of all of the entertainment competition shows,” he tells Variety. “It also produced so many people that came out of the show that still continue to make an incredible living as a result of their exposure on the show.”
Orland says that some of that talent nurtured on the series — which turned out stars that included Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Fantasia, Phillip Phillips, and Adam Lambert, among others — are prime candidates to take the show »
