Brad Paisley and country's expanding view of 'traditional American values'

3 June 2014 11:47 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Country music has, for the most part, aligned itself with what are referred to as “traditional American values.” No one has a clear cut definition of what those are, but they usually include a strong sense of patriotism (or, more realistically, jingoism), and a nostalgic yearning that things were better when families came with a mom and a dad, mom stayed at home and looked after the kids and had dinner waiting on the table, Dad drove an American-made car  (preferably a truck) from his 9-to-5 job, and they went to church every Sunday.  Add in that they usually lived in middle America or the south and considered New York a place they might want to visit, but definitely didn’t want to live. Recap: 'American Idol' Season 13 - Top 3 Performances

"American Idol" is a journey and even if we haven't always been overjoyed with this season's journey, I feel like we're moving toward the correct destination. Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson and Alex Preston have been, for me at least, the clear Top 3 for nearly two months. I honestly don't care what happens from here, because while I like Alex, Jena and Caleb, I don't have a passionate singular attachment to any one of them.  So... May the best singer win! Click though and follow along for what I assume will be three performances apiece tonight... 8:02 p.m. Et. Oh right. This is the 500th episode of "American Idol." So we're doing a full montage of "American Idol" through the years. We even got a brief momentary reminder that Ellen DeGeneres was an "American Idol" judge. And I think if you go back and look at that Season 1 reveal, you may have spotted Brian Dunkleman, »

20 March 2014 10:15 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

“I feel like my life is a little bit like a dream,” says Brandy Clark. If so, she must never want to wake up. The Nashville singer/songwriter, who co-penned such hits as Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two,” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow,” released her debut album, “12 Stories,” last fall, and she has been floating ever since. Clark’s clear, silky voice carries the tales of people that you either recognize yourself or your neighbor in they are so richly drawn and cinematic in their detail. There’s a realness to the characters: The woman who prays to Jesus, but still buys a lottery ticket in “Pray to Jesus,” or the gal who can’t quite stop herself from stepping into that elevator that will lead to a night of adultery on “What Will Keep Me Out Of Heaven” or »

Over the last few years, Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles has been at the center of gay rumors partially due to her suggestive lyrics in a few hit songs. "I had such a strong lesbian following, and in the gay community as a whole, I've always had so much support from them," she said. "I think a lot of people assumed, too. Whenever they heard a woman with an alto voice playing an acoustic instrument stylistically reminiscent of those wonderful icons you counted, Ani Difranco and Indigo Girls—and especially with the audience I had in my 20s—I think a »
