The CW has renewed “The Originals” and “iZombie” for the 2017-2018 television season, Variety has learned.
“The Originals” will head into its fifth season, while “iZombie” will be heading into its fourth season.
Created by Julie Plec, “The Originals” is a spinoff of “The Vampire Diaries,” which premiered in 2013. The flagship “Vampire” series signed off this spring, ending its eight season run, so renewing “Originals” keeps the franchise at the network for at least another season.
“Originals” follows Joseph Morgan’s Klaus Mikaelson and his family in New Orleans. Morgan stars alongside Daniel Gillies, Phoebe Tonkin, Charles Michael Davis, Yusuf Gatewood and Riley Voelkel. Plec serves as executive producer with Leslie Morgenstein. The series hails from Bonanza Productions Inc., My So-Called Company, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios.
The show has remained relatively stable in its fourth season, which is currently averaging a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 972,000 viewers per episode. That »

“It’s a bit of a fun surprise,” Kreisberg tells TVLine of Zod’s first appearance. “He doesn’t have a lot of screen time, so I can’t say our interpretation is as nuanced as either [Superman/II‘s] Terence Stamp or [Man of Steel‘s] Michael Shannon, but we did »
Fact: Only on The Originals could you watch a grown man coerce a seven-year-old girl into bringing him a bag of blood and think, “You know, this scene is actually kind of sweet.”
Then again, there was an undeniable charm about the way Hope interacted with Marcel during her visit to his new abode on Friday’s episode. Powerful as she may be — and she’s happy to remind you, in case you forget — Hope is way too innocent to comprehend the bad blood between her father and »
For tonight's episode of The Originals, the king of New Orleans also became the king of the set. Charles Michael Davis, who has starred as Marcel Girard since the beginning of the series, makes his directorial debut with "High Water and a Devil's Daughter," an episode that continues to deal with the threat of the evil Hollow. While the actor has directed a few music and dance videos before, tonight marks the premiere of his first major production as a director. Davis has been interested in directing since fairly early on in the series, and says it was Paul Wesley directing an episode of The Vampire Diaries that inspired him. "I became so curious," Davis tells E! News. "I got some »

The emotional hour marks Davis’ first turn as a director, an experience he tells TVLine he would “love to do again,” even though he admits it came with a steep learning curve.
“A big part of it was just learning how to talk to people and find out what their needs are — if they’re feeling insecure, »

After a season full of dead ends and red herrings, Riverdale finally revealed who killed Jason Blossom this week. But of course, they tossed a few more curveballs (and dead bodies) our way first.
It’s still homecoming night, and Jughead’s dad F.P. is under arrest for Jason’s murder. Back at Archie’s house, he and Veronica tell their parents they know F.P. is innocent, because someone planted the murder weapon in his trailer. The parents don’t believe them, though, and Mary — she’s a lawyer, »
Teen love triangles are fun and all… but this Thursday’s Riverdale (The CW, 9/8c) is going full-on crime drama.
“Most of our episodes, there’s a balance between the soap and the mystery,” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says, but this week’s episode “is all about the mystery.” And rightfully so, since Jughead’s dad F.P. was just arrested — and possibly framed? — last week for the murder of Jason Blossom.
The arrest hit Jughead hard, crushing any hope he had of getting his family back together. »
The Originals‘ Freya and Keelin have spent all season dancing around their feelings for one another — sometimes literally — but based on a new batch of photos from Friday’s episode (The CW, 8/7c), their budding romance is about to reach full bloom.

The stressful hour, helmed by first-time director Charles Michael Davis, finds Freya enacting a “risky plan that brings her face to face with their latest threat [and] an unexpected twist leaves her life hanging in the balance.” But that’s not what I’m choosing to focus on right now.

The Hollow is a force to be reckoned with in New Orleans.
The race was on to save the children on The Originals Season 4 Episode 4 and turned out to be another solid episode of this CW series.
Let's start with everyone mostly teaming up to save the children of New Orleans. It must have been tough for everyone involved.
There's been so much said and done over the years that the very notion of the likes of Vincent, Klaus, Marcel, Elijah and Hayley joining forces seemed like something that would happen when hell froze over.
The drama is always at its best on this series when crazy power struggles are going on. In this case, that power struggle was the differing factions of the French Quarter branching off to do their own thing.
Lara's comments about Marcel being the ruler of the city were true, but I have to give »

Ausiello: As a matter of fact, yes. Remember in the finale, when Sasha said she wasn’t giving up on Eugene, even though he’d reverted to his most spineless self? That was “a hint to what the story is,” showrunner Scott Gimple recently told TVLine. “It certainly looked like he was still a Savior. But is that going to haunt him… change him? »
The Originals is facing a whole new kind of threat this season, and it's particularly bad news for Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), since it appears to be a blue light that steals children. The CW series just jumped ahead five years between the end of season three and the start of season four and revealed that the original family had spent those five years in coffins and cursed, or in Klaus' (Joseph Morgan) case, weakened and kept in a dungeon by Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). As of last week, even Klaus had been freed and was on his way to seeing the daughter he hasn't seen since she was a toddler, but there's a much larger threat on the horizon now. We got on the phone with Phoebe Tonkin to talk »
