The trailers for this movie looked like the work of Tim Burton - mysterious, dark and ephemeral (not surprising when I found out that they'd nabbed the costume designer and one of the producers of Alice in Wonderland for Snow White and the Huntsman) so I was willing to overlook my dislike for Kristen Stewart as an actress in favour of the worksmanship and craft that appeared »

Pete Doherty's performance as a philosophising dandy is as catastrophic as the rest of this insufferable film

There is a long and noble British tradition of musicians becoming absolutely godawful actors. Gary Kemp gave it his best shot; Sting outdid himself. Pete Doherty, however, breaks the mould. His performance as a shambling yet sensitive libertine (geddit?) in Sylvie Verheyde's adaptation of the Alfred de Musset novel is catastrophic. Still, that does mean it's tonally of a piece with the rest of the film.

Face as pasty as porridge, feathered Hoxton hairdo intact, Doherty plays an inexplicably minted dandy whose hobbies include super-intense philosophical debate and orgies. After he breaks up with Lily Cole, who has been playing footsie with a male friend (apparently more of a deal-breaker in a debauched society than you might imagine), he has a chance encounter with Charlotte Gainsbourg and a baby goat in a wood. »

The model/actress endured a tough time when she was a youngster because she was constantly teased over her hair colour - and she insists her teachers should have done more to stop the taunts.

Cole, 24, tells Live magazine, "I remember feeling very insecure. When I'd meet people, I would think they wouldn't like me - that was an actual thought process - because I'm a redhead. It's absolutely absurd. Teachers often let it happen because there isn't a stigma around it in the same way there is, quite rightly, about racism. Any form of bullying should be stamped on because children are so fragile and it affects them."

However, Lily has no problem with her locks now, adding, "The irony is that now I love my hair." »

Film Review: Inert, Ineffective ‘The Moth Diaries’ with Lily Cole

Chicago – Mary Harron’s “The Moth Diaries” is a perfect teaching tool for potential filmmakers. It is proof of two oft-forgotten rules of cinema: 1. Not every successful piece of work in one medium should be adapted to another (or not all good books make good films). 2. Even talented directors can be the wrong fit for the material. This movie is a mess in so many ways that promising young actresses and a typically-intriguing director get sucked into its almost-complete failure. There are clear signs of what intrigued everyone about the source material but none of it translated to quality cinema.
