Top Cat Films announced that Xenon Pictures will release Prey (aka The Outback) in North America on July 13, 2010. The horror thriller stars Aussie superstar Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Jesse Johnson and features 2005 World Poker Champion Joe Hachem (wat?). The film is inspired by a North American couple who disappeared in the West Australian desert while on vacation. They were never seen alive again. Their abandoned vehicles and totally unused supplies were found in sand dunes near an Aboriginal sacred site--less than an hour away from the closest town.

Two things strike me as funny about the trailer for The Outback , the Aussie import formerly known as Prey . One, the end of the trailer says "The Outback: Australian for Fear," planting tongue firmly in cheek. Secondly, as the ensemble cast is identified with quick cuts and the actor's names, Joe Hachem is seen sitting at a computer looking intense. The trailer then cuts to him playing solitaire. That's the way you sell us on this character? Maybe he's the comedic relief, but still... Anyway, Xenon Pictures has picked the film up for U.S. distribution and a DVD release is planned for July 13. Jesse Johnson, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Ben Kermode co-star.
