“Banjo is a breakthrough performance for the underrated Riteish Deshmukh” – Subhash K Jha Review

25 September 2016 8:41 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Starring Riteish Deshmukh, Nargis Fakhri

Directed by Ravi Jadhav

In what could be seen as a breakthrough performance for the underrated Riteish Deshmukh with reservations, Banjo provides him a chance to play a street musician in the bustling egalitarian bylanes of Mumbai where water scarcity is seriously countermanded by an abundance of dreams.

In fact one of the dreamers dreams of owning his personal water tank.

Seriously.

Deshmukh plays Taraat, who we are told, has been raised by a now-old and senile musician (JanardhanParab).Early in the film when in typical Raja Hindustani style Taraat is supremely smitten by the GoriMemsahib from the Us (Fakhri), he goes through a lengthy drunken monologue where he pretends to hold a conversation with his inert foster-father who can’t hear a thing. Deshmukh exercises admirable control over the dialogues and the shifting emotions in the sequence, never overstating the self-pity for applause.

Banjo Music Review

5 September 2016 12:00 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

© 2016 − All right reserved.

Ravi Jadhav’s Banjo is an underdog story that takes a look at the journey of a street musician to stardom. Riteish Deshmukh and Nargis Fakhri play the lead actors and just like the combo, the album is not the sort of package we expect from the VishalShekhar duo. With Amitabh Bhattacharya penning the lyrics, the dynamic duo have offered something as peculiar as the banjo itself. So let’s dive straight in.

Whenever you start something new, it is to be expected to pray to Ganesha for guidance and assistance. Bappa is that prayer, sounding like a mashup of the banjo and English marching band trumpets, with heavy dose of local drums. Having said that, the song is not without merit. Vishal Dadnani is somewhat of an expert when it comes to these sort of tracks. Yet it seems to be a remake of your »

Riteish Deshmukh, who plays a street musician in Ravi Jadhav’s ‘Banjo’, recently had to play the Banjo atop of a 40 ft cluster of dhols for the recently launched Bappa song.
