Taskmaster: Alex Horne on series 5, casting, remakes, the future

Louisa Mellor Sep 13, 2017

Taskmaster returns for a fifth series tonight on Dave, featuring Bob Mortimer, Sally Phillips, Nish Kumar, Aisling Bea and Mark Watson...

“I think I could probably fit all that lot in my trousers,” says Tim Key gesturing at the crowded kitchen worktop of a London flat in this 2008 YouTube video. He then tests the hypothesis, starting with a loaf of bread, a bunch of bananas and a silver espresso maker. Into the trouser leg they go, followed by a parade of unlikely items - a cheese grater, a bottle of orange squash, an unwieldy marble bowl. Every so often, a hand reaches out from the camera to assist. It belongs to comedian Alex Horne, seen intermittently in the back of shot drinking a coffee and checking his watch.

Tim Key Q&A as it happened

Enigmatically droll comedian Tim Key is in Edinburgh with his show Single White Slut, and hes answered your questions from what it was like being trussed in tinfoil for the Alan Partridge movie to considering wrestling with Shaun Murphy on a snooker table onstage in Sheffield

2.31pm BST

And with that, Tim heads off into the Fringe. His show Single White Slut is at the Grand until Monday 25 August thanks to him and to everyone who asked questions.

2.19pm BST

Gingification asks:

If I could only watch one show at the fringe this year with slut in the title, which show should it be?

One with that in the title would be Single White Slut. 9.40 at The Grand. One without would be Monsieur Butterfly, by Alex Horne. I watched it last night and it blew my mind. He's at 8.10, so we don't clash.

2.17pm BST

Edinburgh Comedy Fest Live 2011

9pm, BBC3

First of two showcases hosted by Jon Richardson, featuring stand-up acts at this year's Edinburgh Fringe festival. Comedians slated to appear include laconic Irishman Ed Byrne, whimsical Welshman Mark Watson, and razor-sharp, wide-eyed Shappi Khorsandi. This and The Culture Show have the festival pretty well covered but it would be nice to see more of the new, breaking comic talent on the fringe this year. Still, this makes you miss the half-lit caves crammed with damp tourists who've been drinking since midday. Julia Raeside

Frankie Boyle slams "sellout" Mark Watson

Frankie Boyle slams
Frankie Boyle has launched a stinging attack on fellow comedian Mark Watson. Boyle made the comments in response to one of Watson's old blog posts, in which the We Need Answers host debated the merits of a joke made by Boyle about Down's Syndrome in front of a mother of a 5-year-old who suffered from the condition. In his original post, Watson wrote: "Pretty much since I became a comedian, I've wondered whether comedy awards itself too much licence by playing the hey-calm-down-we're-just-joking-here card, and thus making anyone who objects feel like... well, like a Daily Mail reader. "I've seen scores and scores of gags at the expense of fat people, gay people, disabled people, women, pretty much every minority group other than 45-year-old, slightly paunchy stand-ups in suit jackets. "A lot of them are just jokes, and everyone (more)

Standup comics hit the boom time

They've taken over TV, they top the book charts, they appear on Question Time – and now they're filling entire arenas night after night. Brian Logan on the standup comedy explosion

Mick Perrin has seen a few changes in his time. Only seven years ago, Perrin, a live comedy promoter, set up Britain's first ever standup tour of arenas, for Eddie Izzard's Sexie show. "I was double-booked by one of the venues," he says. "They thought it was ludicrous to expect that Eddie would sell. The guy said, 'Well, he's just a comic, isn't he?'" Other acts – Lee Evans, Baddiel and Skinner – had played the occasional arena, but none had played a full tour of them. "I had venue managers laughing at me when I rang them up," says Perrin.

As the great Bob Monkhouse punchline goes, they're not laughing now. In those seven years – and particularly in the

Merlin rescues Morgana from marauding bandits with his flashing eye magic, only to have Arthur put a bucket of soapy water over his head. So begins a new series of everyone's favourite medieval adventure in which Morgana, looking like an evil version of Andrea Corr, uses all kinds of sorcery to wreak terrible vengeance on the kingdom of Uther Pendragon. And to make matters worse, her sister, played with malevolent glee by Emilia Fox, is helping her. Merlin has rumbled her game, but who's going to believe him? A tense cliffhanger leaves us guessing.

Watson 'not worried' about comedy critics

Stand-up comic Mark Watson has claimed that he is not worried about being criticised for going on a reality TV show. The We Need Answers presenter, 30, will appear on ITV1's Marco's Kitchen Burnout this week, alongside Ruth Langsford and former Wag Elen Rives. However, Watson insisted that he is unperturbed by rival comics who may mock him for his latest TV venture. "It would be quite easy for people to do that because on the show I don't get much opportunity to be funny apart from burning things and knocking things over," he told Digital Spy. "You could quite easily say, 'He used to do funny stand-up and now he messes around in a kitchen'. But what I would probably say about people who criticise comedians that have become more well-known is that they usually (more)

The Restaurant | A Child's Christmases in Wales | Misfits | Curb Your Enthusiasm

The Restaurant

8pm, BBC2

It's been entertaining in parts, but there's a distinct feeling that The Restaurant has fallen for the most cynical of reality television traps this time around: putting inept people in trying situations so that everyone can guffaw when they inevitably trip up. It's hard to believe that any of the remaining contestants would be capable of knocking out a few cheese sandwiches for a buffet, let alone running a business in one of the riskiest industries of all. So what's the point? Tonight Raymond picks a "winner". He'd better get used to that disappointed grimace he's been sporting all series.

BBC4's We Need Answers is brilliant in its modest splendour | Julia Raeside

We Need Answers has gone largely unnoticed but it is a whimsical, gleeful delight – and the best comedy quiz since Shooting Stars

Quiet as mice, a fortnight ago, three comedians tiptoed onto BBC4 and placed a new comedy quizshow gently onto the airwaves. Had you heard tell of its coming (aside from this marvellous quizzing in The Guide)? I certainly hadn't seen any trailers or fanfares before I happened upon it. And yet We Need Answers is the best new comedy quiz since Shooting Stars. Or, were I a very lazy woman, I'd go as far as to say it Is the new Shooting Stars. But it's so much more than that. It's a whimsical, gleeful, silly half hour from comedians Mark Watson, Tim Key and Alex Horne. The three play host each week to two celebrity guests who battle it out for the coveted We Need Answers plate by

Has Never Mind the Buzzcocks survived Simon Amstell's departure?

There's now a new focus on team captains and the guest hosts have been good but do you still miss Amstell's catty wit?

When host Simon Amstell left Never Mind the Buzzcocks to kickstart his stand-up career and write new sitcom Grandma's House, many fans of the show felt Amstell's catty wit would be almost irreplaceable. As one confused-by-the-concept-of-proper-nouns poster on YouTube explained in the comments of the first episode (hosted by James Corden): "I Know He Enraged A Few People Here And There And Made The Show A Bit Cringy At Times, But It'll Never Be The Same Without Simon. Just His Delivery Made Everything So Much Funnier, And He Brought An Energy To The Show That No-One Else Could."

It's hard not to agree with our chum here (about Amstell, rather than the use of capitals for every new word). There are few hosts who could respond

'Buzzcocks' to return with new lineup

The BBC has announced that Never Mind The Buzzcocks will return this autumn with a brand new lineup. Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding joins Phill Jupitus on the show as a team captain, while the series will be presented by guest hosts David Walliams, Alex James, Dermot O'Leary, Jack Whitehall, Rhod Gilbert, Frank Skinner, Mark Watson and James Corden. "I am so excited about Buzzcocks. I am leaping across the Camden rooftops dressed as a small white kitten," Fielding said. Executive editor Katie Taylor added: "It's great (more)
