DVD Review – Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)

12 June 2017 1:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, 2016.

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

Starring Milla Jovovich, Iain Glen, Ali Larter, Shawn Roberts, Eoin Macken, Fraser James, Ruby Rose, William Levy, and Ever Anderson.

Synopsis:

In the supposed final instalment of the video game-based movie franchise, Alice returns to The Hive in Raccoon City to face off against Umbrella Corp. in a bid to save humanity… or something like that.

Out of all the modern (i.e. 21st century) horror movie franchises to have made millions of dollars at the box office the Resident Evil series is arguably the most debated amongst audiences. On the one hand the franchise does offer up the kind of visceral thrills that wiping out hordes of zombies in a video game setting provides, with a seemingly infinite number of undead corpses splattering up against the screen as our heroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) uses every weapon at her disposal »

Today we have even more details about this reboot, with iconic filmmaker James Wan coming aboard to serve as a producer. The project will also be written by Greg Russo, with this new report confirming that it will have an entirely different cast, although no one has signed on to star yet.

Deadline reports that James Wan will produce alongside Constantin Film and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster. There is no director for the project yet, but with a writer and producer now aboard, the project seems to be moving forward rather quickly, so that may change soon. However, there is no release date in place, and this reboot »

Film Review: The Book (Finally) Closes on ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’

1 February 2017 2:51 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Guilty pleasures are the order of the day, especially when we are facing daily signs of a real, impending apocalypse. End of the world by zombies remains one of the most popular cataclysmic cinematic events and “Resident Evil” is proof. “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” proves that what should be dead can come back to life, but the real question is if it actually should.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

The “Resident Evil” film franchise has been around for over half my life and has proven to be the most successful (read: profitable) film series based on a video game to date. Having grown up on the video games, and having the first film come out during a probably impressionable time in my life (read: puberty), I have had this lingering fascination towards the franchise. The synergy created by combining several of my interests (video games, film, zombies, strong female protagonists, etc) has »

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter pushes the franchise past $1 billion

30 January 2017 10:10 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite earning the best reviews of the series [although our own Rob Kojder didn’t like it] and the lowest opening weekend of the series, Paul W.S. Anderson and Sony Pictures have a lot to celebrate with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter as the franchise has crossed $1 billion worldwide.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter earned just $13 million from its opening weekend, which wasn’t enough to unseat Split from the top spot, or trouble Hidden Figures and A Dog’s Purpose. However a strong opening overseas has pushed the film to $78 million worldwide.

The film opened to number one in Japan last December.

It should be noted, however, that while Sony are reporting the franchise has pushed $1 billion, Boxofficemojo claim the series has so far earned $994 million. Either way, it will cross $1 billion next week.

Box Office: ‘Split’ Splinters ‘A Dog’s Purpose,’ ‘Resident Evil’ to Repeat No. 1 on Friday

28 January 2017 7:22 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Split” is once again twisting its way to the top of the box office after beating out newcomers “A Dog’s Purpose” and “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” on Friday. The film, from Universal via its partnership with Blumhouse Productions, earned nearly $8 million on Friday on its way to a $25 to $26 million second weekend at 3,199 locations.

“A Dog’s Purpose,” also distributed by Universal, but made by Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media, fetched $5.3 million from 3,058 theaters to put it solidly in second for the weekend.

“A Dog’s Purpose” met blowback when TMZ leaked a video showing a German Shepherd struggling during production. The video sparked outrage online and PETA called for a boycott, while the filmmakers have insisted that the clip did not accurately represent what happened on set. Still, Universal canceled the film’s intended premiere and press junket, and the situation dropped estimates for the film’s »

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Review

27 January 2017 3:10 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

I sit before you a broken, devastated Resident Evil fan after watching Paul W.S. Anderson’s final nail in Alice’s coffin, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. This is coming from a Resident Evil apologist, nonetheless. Someone who enthusiastically purchased the original trilogy on special edition. Someone who’s most swoon-worthy cinematic crush is Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine. Someone who goes to bat for Kevin Durand as Barry Burton, or refers to all six five previous Resident Evil movies as sweet horror junk food. These sentiments are wholly sincere, but even an Alice devotee like myself can’t recognize The Final Chapter as a fitting means to any franchise “end” (there’s always sequel potential). Abandon hope and pray for a swift finish all you want – welcome to the lowest depths of mainstream horror Hell.

Box Office: James McAvoy’s ‘Split’ Muzzling ‘A Dog’s Purpose,’ ‘Resident Evil’

27 January 2017 2:00 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

James McAvoy’s horror-thriller “Split” is showing plenty of staying power, heading for its second consecutive victory at the North American box office with about $19 million at 3,199 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

The opening of controversial family drama “A Dog’s Purpose” appeared to be performing at the lower end of expectations in second — with about $18 million at 3,058 sites — following a boycott launched by PETA over a leaked video showing a German Shepherd struggling during production. The filmmakers have insisted that PETA and TMZ have mischaracterized what took place.

PETA’s PR attack appears to have had a moderate toll, given that forecasts before the boycott was launched were as high as $25 million. “Split” should dominate moviegoing on Friday with $7 million while “A Dog’s Purpose” puts its paws on about $5 million.

It’s hard to believe that after 15 years we’ll be coming to the end of the road with Alice (Milla Jovovich) and the Umbrella Corporation in Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which is being released by Screen Gems this weekend in theaters nationwide.

Box Office: Can ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Still Win the Weekend After Canine Controversy?

24 January 2017 3:56 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal-Amblin’s “A Dog's Purpose” faces serious challenges this weekend in the face of a week-old call for a boycott of the canine feel-good film, which opens at about 3,050 North American locations.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has blistered everyone involved with the movie in the wake of the Jan. 18 release of a leaked video showing a German Shepherd named Hercules balking at performing a stunt in churning water. Producer Gavin Polone, director Lasse Hallstrom, co-screenwriter W. Bruce Cameron and animal trainers from Birds and Animals Unlimited have said TMZ and PETA mischaracterized what actually took place — insisting that Hercules was reluctant to go into water only because he had not rehearsed at the specific  location. Polone also alleged that PETA had edited the video in a misleading way.

An online petition launched on Jan. 20 also called for a boycott unless the filmmakers donated a “significant »

‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’ Cast On Reclaiming the Horror From the Early Films

A group of zombies shambled down through Regal L.A. Live on Monday night, leading the way for the stars of “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” to walk the red carpet for the last installment of the film franchise.

As the bookend to the fifteen-year franchise, “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” return to its roots, recapturing the horror from the very first film and honing in on the origin of its main character, Alice.

“In many ways [the film] is a return to the virtues of the first film, which was very claustrophobic, kind of spiral horror, and as the franchise went on the movies became larger and more associated with big action,” writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson said. “This movie keeps the big action but returns to the virtues of that claustrophobic horror.”
