New Stills From ‘Cosmopolis’ Put Focus on Supporting Cast; Preview Howard Shore & Metric’s Score

With a release eyed for this summer following a Cannes debut, the updates from David Cronenberg‘s crazy-looking Cosmopolis are coming in full swing. Today we’ve got our first listen from the score for the Robert Pattinson-starrer by long-time collaborator Howard Shore and the Canadian indie band Metric. Metric announces new album Synthetica due in June

Since they’ve apparently found a little time between composing music for Grammy-nominated soundtracks and performing pop songs for the Queen of England (seriously), perennially busy Toronto quartet Metric has recorded a new studio LP, and the band announced today that Synthetica, the band's fifth full-length album, will be released June 12. Like 2009’s Fantasies, Synthetica will be released via the band’s own label, Metric Music International, and through a joint venture with Mom + Pop in the U.S. Guitarist Jimmy Shaw says this album finds Metric at the height of its power. “We've always had ...

'Scott Pilgrim' Makes Real Musicians Out Of Sex Bob-Omb Actors

"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hits theaters this week, and when it does, audiences will be treated to more than just a live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's popular comic book series — they'll also get some great music, too.

During this year's Comic-Con, I had a chance to sit down with two members of Sex Bob-Omb, Scott Pilgrim's band in the series, as well as the band's first-ever fan, to discuss the musical side of their "Scott Pilgrim" training.

In the film, Mark Webber and Alison Pill play bandmates Stephen Stills (vocals/guitar) and Kim Pine (drums), while Johnny Simmons plays Young Neil, the band's biggest (and at the start, only) fan.

"I got to meet with Beck's drummer, who is starting to teach me other drumming beyond the stuff that was in the songs," Pill told MTV News.

"And drums are incredibly hard to learn and you figured it out in two weeks,

'Scott Pilgrim' Stars On Learning To Play Music Like Rock Stars

'I had guitar lessons, and I struggled,' confesses Mark Webber.

From the very first scene in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" in which Michael Cera and his Sex Bob-Omb bandmates strap on their instruments and bust out some serious rock-and-roll thunder, director Edgar Wright's new flick crackles with musical verve. There are band battles, tons of talk about record contracts and artist jealousy, and a soundtrack as important to the mood of each scene as the words coming out of each character's mouth.

Cera has strummed chords before, in "Juno" and "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," but not all of his castmates had musical experience when they signed on to this adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series. So Wright threw his actors into rock-and-roll boot camp,

Mark Webber and Alison Pill Interview Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

He’s the insecure lead singer, she’s the angsty drummer. Together, they are two thirds of the band Sex Bob-Omb in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Mark Webber plays Stephen Stills, Alison Pill is Kim Pine and while these rolls might make them household names, each already has quite the career going. Webber has appeared in films such as Good Dick, The Good Life, Broken Flowers, Hollywood Ending and Jesus’ Son and even wrote and directed a film called Explicit Ills with Rosario Dawson and Paul Dano. Pill was the lone female among Sean Penn’s friends in his Oscar winning film Milk and she also appeared in Dan in Real Life, Pieces of April, In Treatment and will soon appear in the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris.
