TelevisaUnivision, the Spanish-language media giant, took a different approach to its upfront this year, turning the west side’s Hk Hall into what the company called “Casa Cultura,” a venue that celebrates Latin and Hispanic culture, through food, music, entertainment and more.
The company, led by CEO Wade Davis, leaned on that message in a brief afternoon presentation to advertisers and media buyers (later that evening, the company brought in music star Becky G to lead a performance).
“I wanted to really have our marketers and audience feel it, versus me just kind of standing on stage and showing a video of stuff that we usually do,” TelevisaUnivision ad sales chief Donna Speciale told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “I feel like the interaction between the sports, the music, news or political, what’s going on in our newsrooms, Vix, streaming, the explosion of a streaming, all of that...

Media-wise, the 2024 presidential election crosses the official starting line with debate season, and this cycle the contenders on the Republican side, including a multiple-indicted former Potus, are looking to beat Democrat Joe Biden and take over the White House. But first they have to take on one another.
For the candidates, debates are a way to score points against a rival, stand out from the field or define a campaign that’s heretofore been rudderless.

Front-runner Trump has opted out of all the debates so far. In August, he instead decided to hold forth with Tucker Carlson in a more friendly pre-taped interview. That debate drew 12.8 million viewers on Fox News. He also did not participate in the September 27 debate in Simi Valley, CA, which drew 9.5 million viewers across Fox Business and Univision and simulcast on Fox News.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Monday afternoon asked for a meeting with TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis, raising concerns about the company’s “continued commitment to its mission and its audience” and citing concerns about “preventing the spread of mis- and disinformation in Latino communities.”
According to the letter, a copy of which was shared with The Hollywood Reporter, the Chc is requesting a meeting with Davis to discuss concerns that arose from the controversial Trump interview.
“The network prides itself on the trust the audience places in their journalists and years of fair and accurate reporting,” the letter states. “Circumstances surrounding the interview with former President Trump have given the appearance that the company has not upheld these standards.”

A prominent news anchor is leaving Univision’s news division, just days after the network ran a controversial interview with former President Trump.
Leon Krauz has been a national news anchor for Univision Noticias on Noticiero Univision Edición Nocturna and previously worked as an anchor at Kmex, the company’s Los Angeles station. It is not clear why Krauze exited the network, though a source said that he had time left on his contract.
“TelevisaUnivision expresses our heartfelt gratitude for the outstanding contributions, expertise, and insightful analyses delivered by Leon Krauze throughout his tenure with our news division,” the company said in a statement. “We sincerely appreciate his dedicated efforts in empowering and informing Hispanic communities at both the national and local levels for over a decade. The tone of the second Republican primary debate can best be summed up with a slip of the tongue from Vivek Ramaswamy: “Thank you for speaking while I’m interrupting.”
Over two chaotic, loud, and often unintelligible hours, seven candidates appeared onstage for a second round of jabs between presidential hopefuls — who at this point are all still fighting for second place. Fox News once again hosted the debate, tapping Stuart Varney, Dana Perino, and Univision’s Ilia Calderón as moderators. The trio struggled to maintain any semblance of control over the proceedings.

Former President Donald Trump again is bashing the prospect of another Republican presidential debate, falsely claiming that his absence has translated into low viewership.
In fact, when his rivals gather at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library for the second debate on Wednesday, the question will be whether the event on Fox Business and Univision can match last month’s figures for the first gathering: a higher-than-expected 12.8 million viewers.
Fox News’s Dana Perino, who will moderate the debate with Stuart Varney and Univision’s Ilia Calderón, suggested that the viewership reflected a willingness among voters to look at alternatives.
“I think there’s people who are open minded and they’re paying a lot of attention, and they care about the direction of this country and they’re worried about it,” Perino told Deadline.
“I think that the national level of anxiety is very high, in particular on a couple of issues,...

At Fox Business Network — for one night, at least — it’s all a lot more than the economy.
When the cable outlet televises a Republican primary debate on September 27, many of the strategies it used the last time it did so are going out the window. Gone are moderators Neil Cavuto and Maria Bartiromo, who have experience with such events. In their place: First-timers Stuart Varney and Dana Perino, alongside Univision’s Ilia Calderón. The network will also move away from its efforts to focus largely on business and economic topics, as it has in the past.
Executives at Fox News Media have begun contemplating when to take more momentous news coverage to a broader audience, says Jay Wallace, president and executive editor of Fox News Media, in an interview. “There are very few events out there anymore,” Wallace says. “People do care about politics,” he adds. “It is a...

In a break from the norm of this year’s upfronts week, TelevisaUnivision’s presentation Tuesday morning at Pier 36 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan had no picketing writers outside; no protesters; and no dramatic executive or talent departures.
It was perhaps the only upfront of the week to be business as usual, with the WGA strike not impacting the company (which produces most of its Spanish-language programming in Mexico and Colombia), and a lack of corporate drama and intrigue.
In its place was a show of confidence, as executives touted a theme of “Young America,” noting that with the demographic changes in the country, much of that growth will come from Hispanics.
“We will be 100 percent of the 18 to 34 year old growth over the next five years, that’s what clients are leaning into,” TelevisaUnivision ad sales chief Donna Speciale told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview ahead of its upfront presentation.

TV’s Spanish-language Univision network will broadcast Super Bowl Lvii next year, adding a new entrant to the usual coterie of English-language outlets that show the game.
The deal was struck in partnership with the NFL and CBS Sports, which has the rights to show the game in English.
The details were released as part of TelevisaUnivision’s annual “upfront” presentation, when U.S. networks try to sell the bulk of their commercial programming ahead of their next programming cycle.
The company also disclosed that its ViX streaming outlet has more than 30 million monthly active users globally, with Pierluigi Gazzolo, the CEO of ViX noting that ” 80% of consumption on Vix is content no one else has and, importantly, 63% of users on ViX are incremental to the massive audience we serve on linear, which means greater cross-platform reach for all of you.”

With the coronavirus looming large, the first debate Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders drew around 10.8 million total viewers across CNN and Univision.
That represents a 4.5 million viewer drop from the last debate which took place on Feb, 26 and was broadcast on CBS. It also puts it pretty far off the second NBC-msnbc debate which scored 19.7 million viewers, a record total for a Democratic debate. An additional 3.9 million viewers tuned in via live streams on CNN’s digital platform.
None of the Democratic debates thus far in this cycle have come near to the 24 million viewership figure posted by Donald Trump’s first debate on Fox News in August of 2015.

Standing six feet apart on an airless and suddenly sparse Democratic debate stage, former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders set the tone for a particularly somber and unusual night.
With Covid-19 spreading ever more rapidly throughout the country, co-hosts CNN and Univision first announced that the previously planned debate would have no audience, before moving the entire enterprise to one of its studios in Washington, D.C. — making this the first debate to do so since the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy debates. There, Biden and Sanders — the two remaining candidates of consequence to emerge out of an extraordinarily packed field — met in the unusually sterile environment to hash out the differences between their platforms. Sunday’s Democratic debate, hosted by CNN, will get a new moderator and location amid the coronavirus pandemic, the DNC said in a statement.
Univision’s Jorge Ramos will not moderate the debate after it was discovered he had been in “proximity” with “someone who was in direct contact with a person that tested positive for coronavirus,” the DNC said.
Though Ramos was cleared by medical professionals, he is stepping back from his moderating duties “out of an abundance of caution.” Univision’s Ilia Calderón will replace Ramos as a moderator.

Debates among Democratic presidential hopefuls in this recent cycle have been raucous, knock-down drag-em-outs. The next one is likely to be a more staid affair.

Meanwhile, one of the journalists scheduled to moderate the event, Univision journalist Jorge Ramos, will bow out, citing medical concerns.
