The cutthroat world of agribusiness gets the spotlight in At Any Price, a Farmville soap opera with a curiously cynical look at Midwestern prairie life. This earnest generational drama from writer/director Ramin Bahrani never comes together to work as a whole, but some good performances and peculiar plot turns make it a more entertaining experience than perhaps it should be. At Any Price centers on the Whipple family of rural Iowa, specifically Henry Whipple (Dennis Quaid) and Dean Whipple (Zack Efron), father and son farmers with different outlooks on life. Henry has worked hard to maintain his inherited and lucrative seed farming empire and treats his business as an aggressive capitalist enterprise. He’s introduced at a funeral, shamelessly hitting up the family of the deceased to sell him their land. Henry is being investigated for breaking his contract with corporate giant Liberty Seed (a thinly-veiled Monsanto) by reusing »

Director Ramin Bahrani, whose previous films include Man Push Cart (2005), Chop Chop (2007) and Goodbye Solo (2008), tends to push his characters to their very limits. With his latest effort, At Any Price, he makes no exception. Here, the characters seem to barely be able to keep their heads above water, forcing them to reevaluate their decisions and begin building upon uncertain futures.
Set in a small farming community in the Midwest, At Any Price is the age old story of the struggle between fathers and sons. Dennis Quaid brilliantly plays the part of Henry Whipple, a fourth generation corn farmer obsessed with the idea of being the number one distributer of seed to seven counties in southern Iowa. The conflict is, he is facing more problems than fighting for the holding of this coveted title: »

Zac Efron is reportedly dating Maika Monroe. The 25-year-old actor is said to have fallen for the 19-year-old actress on the set of their movie 'At Any Price' and friends say the romance is heating up. A source told In Touch magazine: 'Zac and Maika have been spending a lot of time together at his house and are definitely hooking up. 'Zac is really into her.' Meanwhile, Zac - who previously dated his 'High School Musical' co-star Vanessa Hudgens for almost four years until December 2010 - recently revealed he would love to meet 39-year-old supermodel and 'America's Next Top Model' judge Tyra Banks in the flesh as he has lusted after her for years. The 'Are We Officially »
"Zac Efron Is Hooking Up With His Sexy Blonde Co-Star," reads the headline of yet another HollywoodLife misfire, with the promise of "exclusive details." After heavily quoting a story from In Touch that claims Efron is getting "hot and heavy" and "spending a lot of time" with his At Any Price co-star Maika Monroe, the unreliable webloid adds on its own that the two recently "were all over each other... very touchy and flirty" at a screening of their film. Really? »

Are Zac Efron, 25, and Maika Monroe, 19, the latest Hollywood duo to fall in love after filming a movie together? The High School Musical star is reportedly getting hot and heavy with Maika, his sexy At Any Price co-star.
The two played a sexy couple in the movie, and apparently it rubbed off! “Zac and Maika have been spending a lot of time together at his house and are definitely hooking up,” a source revealed to In Touch. Allegedly, the sexy romance might be quickly headed for even more — Zac may have found his perfect match!
“Zac is really into her,” the source said. And he isn’t »

Plot: A desperate corn salesman (Quaid) is investigated for foul play while his son (Efron) refuses to take up on the family business.
Who’S It For? Fans of American independent dramas, especially those that have significance that reaches nationwide. Also, if you like Dennis Quaid, here is one of his best performances in years.
At Any Price is a movie that means well, and it means to be smarter than it looks. Here is an American corporate drama that plays out in the corn crazy fields of Iowa, but offers ideas fitting to any battling businesses in the current economic climate. This is a movie »

Chicago – Writer/director Ramin Bahrani is interested not in agendas, special effects, or broad statements. He makes films about characters, including the widely acclaimed “Chop Shop,” “Man Push Cart,” and “Goodbye Solo.” For his latest drama, “At Any Price,” Bahrani expands his canvas, using more household names in his effort to tell a story of the heartland and the corruption and greed that can infiltrate even the most seemingly pure aspects of American life.It is a film of noble origins with interesting ideas that nonetheless misses its mark due to a narratively unbelievable twist in the final act and another blank performance from Zac Efron. Dennis Quaid nearly makes it worth seeing on his own and I have no doubt that the multi-talented Bahrani can bounce back but this modern farmer’s tale is a melodrama that I simply didn’t buy.

"At Any Price" is an engrossing if somewhat over-the-top "trouble on the farm" melodrama.
The troubles facing this corner of Iowa fall just short of Biblical as they pack in everything but a drought and plagues of locusts.
Indie director Ramin Bahrani leaves behind the spare, mournful character studies that made his name -- films like "Chop Shop" and "Goodbye, Solo." Here, he's a kid in a cinematic candy store, delivering an embarrassment of character-actor riches.
Dennis Quaid is Henry Whipple, not the stoic, righteous farmer of our collective memory but a grinning, back-slapping hustler. The new "expand or die" ethos in farming isn't new to him.
"When a man stops wanting, a man stops living" he preaches, even showing up at funerals to get an inside track on a dead man's acreage.
A farming family's livelihood is threatened in director Ramin Bahrani's upcoming drama At Any Price. Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron star as a father and son whose farm comes under investigation, just as the son wants to leave the business to enter the world of race car driving. Justine Browning recently sat down with Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron, Heather Graham, and Maika Monroe to discuss this indie drama, in theaters April 26. Check out our exclusive video interviews with the cast of At Any Price.

Ramin Bahrani paints an unusually dark portrait of life in the Iowa heartland set against the backdrop of today’s fiercely competitive world of high-tech agribusiness in his new film, At Any Price. Opening in theaters on April 26th, the drama melds timeless themes of fathers and sons, ambition and rebellion, morality and survival, with a sharply de-romanticized view of modern farming. The film stars Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron, Kim Dickens, Heather Graham and Maika Monroe and marks Bahrani’s first film with a larger budget and cast of professional actors. During the interview, Bahrani and Quaid described the film as a modern day version of Death of a Salesman and Quaid’s character as a Willy Loman for our times who’s chasing the American dream and corrupting himself in the process. Quaid discussed what attracted him to the complex role, how he prepared, and why he chose not to judge his character. »

Directed by Ramin Bahrani
Established indie director Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart, Chop Shop and Goodbye Solo) sharply evokes layered complexity among character performances and ideologies in his new farming family drama, At Any Price. Co-written by Hallie Elizabeth Newton, the film tells the story of empire hungry Henry Whipple (Dennis Quad) as he competes with bigger business, in a modern post-Monsanto farming community. Riddled by the failing interests of his rebellious race car driver son Dean (Zac Efron), Henry is pushed beyond ethical bounds as an unexpected crisis threatens the integrity of his family’s existence.
Brilliantly portrayed and largely misunderstood, Quad plays Whipple with such self-awareness to camp and corniness, that his performance is largely seen as unnecessarily over-the-top and bombastic. Yet, it is in fact necessary. If Whipple is seen as an act, it’s because »

It all began with one, simple line of dialogue, “Yes, grandpa.” Maika Monroe hit her very first film set ready to perform as a mere background extra, but wound up with a line of dialogue and, from there, it was only a matter of time before she went from professional kiteboarder to professional actress. Monroe stars in the upcoming Sony Pictures Classics release “At Any Price” as Cadence Farrow, Dean Whipple’s (Zac Efron) girlfriend. Dean helps his father Henry (Dennis Quaid) run the family business selling seeds to corn farmers in Iowa. When Henry starts to lose customers to his competitors, he turns to Dean for help, but when Dean [ Read More ]
