The long-running Music Midtown festival at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, scheduled for Sept. 17-18 with headliners My Chemical Romance, Future, Jack White and Fallout Boy, has been called off, according to a statement issued by festival organizers. The likely cause, industry sources tell Billboard, are recent changes to Georgia gun laws that prevent the festival from banning guns on the publicly owned festival grounds.
“Hey Midtown fans — due to circumstances beyond our control, Music Midtown will no longer be taking place this year,” a statement posted on Music Midtown’s website reads. “We were looking forward to reuniting in September and hope we can all get back to enjoying the festival together again soon.”
While owner Live Nation didn’t provide any additional details for the cancellation, pro-gun rights groups had been emailing and posting comments of the festival’s social media page for several months,...

In today’s film news roundup, “Roma” will not be in the best picture showcases at AMC and Regal, “Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church” gets a release and SAG-AFTRA’s David White has a new appointment.
‘Roma’ Spurned
AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas are leaving Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” out of their upcoming annual showings of the contenders for the Academy Award for best picture.
Both chains made the announcement Tuesday after “Roma” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and indicated that the rationale stems from their refusal to book Neflix’s titles, due to the Netflix policy of ignoring the traditional 90-day window between initial theatrical release and home release. In the case of “Roma,” Netflix debuted the movie on Nov. 21 and began streaming the film on Dec. 14.

In the middle of the summer of 1971, The New York Times predicted the imminent death of the rock festival. It wasn’t quite two full years after Woodstock, just over four since Monterey Pop, and about 31 years, give or take a few days, before gates opened at the inaugural Bonnaroo.
The impetus for that dramatic declaration wasn’t the Altamont Speedway Free Festival, which had devolved into tragedy about 18 months earlier after the stabbing death of 18-year-old fan Meredith Hunter at the hands of Hells Angels hired as concert security,...

Finding the words doesn't always come easy.
And just because someone stays silent doesn't mean that they don't have a lot of feelings about a topic. Speech writer Matt struggled to find a balance on Madam Secretary Season 3 Episode 6 when he came under suspicion and attack on the very thinnest of connections.
I was nervous going into "The Statement," for a lot of reasons. Episodes about major terrorist bombings and mass shootings always give me a bit of unease since fictional events get preempted by real tragedy all too often. Madam Secretary wasn't just addressing the act of violence, but the societal fallout.
And the original airing came after a week of unrest brewing across the United States. Art imitates life imitates art imitates life... it feels like a terrible uroboros sometimes.
So I was pleasantly surprised by the care with which the writers handled the topic.
Nadine: Any one...

Community, Season 3, Episode 12, “Contemporary Impressionists”
Written by Alex Cooley
Directed by Kyle Newacheck
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Abed is one of Community’s most intriguing characters. His pop culture hyper-literacy aligns him with just the kind of person that would be an avid fan of the show (albeit at a comically elevated level). Early on, the writers used him perhaps a bit too much to explain gags to the uninitiated, but lately he seems to bounce back and forth between fan service and audience critique. Tonight’s episode definitely falls into the latter category, as we see just how self-destructive Abed’s arrested development can be. Even more tragic is the fact that he doesn’t seem capable of understanding that.
Community is known for its wackiness, and there’s plenty of that on display in this episode, but the scene where Troy confronts Abed is surprisingly heartfelt.
